I have been using AS3 for over a year but only to create some web pages with simpleanimations using tween Engines like TweenLite etc. without having to rely too much on custom classes, one reason is obviously because I don�t know understand classes that well, even though I have created some re-usable classes like a class to add a glow or fade all my images or links when mouse over, but nothing fancy and I have been always curious as to how or what the pros do for small projects like a web site or a simple banner. 1- How often do you have to create custom classes for small projects, and for what parts of the project (navigation etc)? 2- Do you try to manipulate all of your MovieClips with classes? The reason for my question is because I want to start thinking more about classes (OOP) and stop witting all my code in the .FLA file or a class using the Document Class (which is no different than putting it directly on the .FLA file) IF classes is the way to go.
View 8 RepliesI've created a base class to house some basic functions I'd like to have across several movie clips in a game I'm making, however, when I link a custom class to the same movie clip I get the message; "The base class will not be used because the class specified is already defined and extends its own subclass. If you wish to use the base class, specify a class name in the Class field that will be auto-generated or enter the default base class 'flash.display.MovieClip' in the Base Class field." I removed the 'extends MovieClip' inside the Class but it still shows the message. Does this mean that I cannot use a custom class and a custom base class on a movie clip?

View 2 RepliesI have 2 custom components, which have their own nesting hierarchy ... One is container for another. I have to "familiarize them" with each other. The way I'm trying to achieve that is using global events (one side is firing and the other one is catching):

BUT, the only thing I could acheive is passing a reference to the Container in the DynamicEvent. Is there any chance that I could access the child at the event-handler function.

View 1 RepliesI need a way to programmatically record what source files are consumed in an MXMLC compile.Ideally there would be a flag to pass to MXMLC to have it report the complete list of sourc files it is compiling, but there doesn't seem to be such a flag. It seems generally you just pass a main.mxml file to MXMLC and it goes off and compiles everything it needs to without telling you what it's doing. As far as I can tell, you also cannot explicitly list the files for it to compile; it will resolve references automatically and compile referenced sources without any way to control that behavior or report on it.
If the compiler cannot supply this information and a user cannot control this behavior, the only other option I can think of is write my own source code scanner for MXML that will traverse all the references in a code tree to give a report of what MXMLC should be compiling, though that's obviously error prone and certainly not something I'm looking forward to.

When I try to do this in an AS CDATA block, it tells me I can't have a class declared within a class (the MX:Application itself). Makes sense. But where and how do I do it?

So far from what i gather, flare only allows the graphing of defined datasets rather than allowing a user to modify the dataset and thus creating a new dataset.

i am working on a flex+java combined project.My IDE and computer configuration is as follows:

When i make a small change in Flex code (eg, reposition of a button...anything), and run the project on server, it does make any change on output. Actually it depends on my luck... because it makes change in output randomly.what is is happening? tried rebuild, republish, clean , restart server, restarting the IDE, restarting the computer all available feature i could think. Also, i created a simple flex project on IDE and compiled it..... everything is compiled and displayed on output.

Something a lot like the existing mx:Panel class, which includes a title label, but acts like a plain mx:Box with regards to adding children. The labels won't change after the button is created, so I'm not worried about the missing [Bindable] metadata.
I'm stuck right now, getting the following compiler error:
Multiple initializer values for default property, 'label', of type 'String'.
...for each of the 3 <s:Label> lines.
Based on this answer to a similar question, I tried adding label="" to my <s:Button> declaration, but that just adds another error.
I am trying to create a custom component in flex that consists of a Button, and a TileList directly below that button. On button click event the TileList should open/close. The component works fine, but when I add it to my main flex app, inside a VBox, it simply opens and closes within the VBox. Because the height of the VBox is much smaller than the custom component's TileList, it causes scrollbars. My issue with it is that it should behave like a ComboBox/Pull-down menu and go over the VBox, instead of going inside it. how to overlay the custom component, so it behaves like a ComboBox/Pull-down?

This will set alpha for the entire stroke to .8 But I want to be able to set a different alpha on the stoke for each plot based on something in the dataProvider. For example the yField in the lineSeries is "Apple" which is how it knows where to plot for the lineSeries. I want to be able to add something like alphaField which tells it what to set the stroke alpha for each plot.
