ActionScript 3.0 :: Input Text - Limit Editability?

I have a simple input text element that has to have pre populated content within it that the user cannot delete or modify. All they can do is add to the end of the existing content. I am wondering about the best way to code this so they cannot delete or modify the existing content of the text field and only add to it? I will be pulling in the prefilled text in via flash vars so the length etc will always be dynamic. However, it will always go at the the begninning of the string.
I'm trying to limit the number of lines people can enter in an input textfield. I tried stuff with maxScroll, but that doesn't check if people press enter, so i end up with too many lines of text. I then looked at maxChars, but it's no use either, because users can still enter as many lines as they want.Is there no way you can combine maxChars and maxScroll? there also is "textfield.onScroller" which checks if the textfield is being scrolled. Can't i use an eventhandler based on onScroller? Like:[code]this results in people not being able to edit messages anymore after they reach the end of the textfield.I have no idea how to limit the number of lines in an input textfield. Anyone?
I need to place a limit on my user input field. In this case I want one of the user input field to have a range of 0-10 and the other one to have a range of 0-59. So far all I have been able to do is this: mins_input.restrict = "0-9"; mins_input.maxChars=2; The result is my user can only input numbers but the numbers have a range up till 99! How do I put the results of my input field into my actionscript? I'm making a timer with an input interface.
I have several input text fields that should take Hex input. I want to limit keyboard input to a-f, A-F, 0-9, left/right arrows, and backspace. I can determine which key was pressed easy enough; I just don't know how to cancel an unwanted keystroke. This seems like it should be very simple, however, I have not been able to find an answer.

I'm trying to extend the text input that comes in flex to support an icon, just like mac os x search text input has a grey circle aligned to the right, the text input has a addChild method, but it didn't work for me.
the last of many problems, is that at the very end of the test, you're shown your score, and you have the option to type your name in a text box and click "save". Doing so will apply you score data (time elapsed, date, correct answers and percentage) along with the name you typed in, and output in a form, that you can save or print off, or whatever. The problem is, the input text box will not let you type in it. If you mouse over it, the mouse stays a pointer, you don't get the text tool. If you click on it, the cursor appears for a split second after you release the mouse button, but you cannot type anything in it.This is the actionscript for the output form:

I have 2 keyframes on my timeline.The first keyframe has an input text field (instance name: inputTxt) and a button (instance name: btnTester).When the user clicks the button it takes them to the second keyframe where their text should be displayed in a dynamic text box (instance name: txtBox).I get a null value in keyframe 2.
i created an input text box that puts the users input into a global variable, but when i test it it gives me not only what i have typed in but all the html formatting for the font that my input text box has on it.I only want the text that i have typed in to go into the variable but the wackload of html is going in there too. ive tried a few different things, rewriting my code, recreating the text box, changing settings, dont know what im missing.
I'm trying to build a fahrenheit to celsius convertor in AS3. How can I test to see whether what is input into a text input box (flash component) is not a number? This isn't correct but you can get an idea of what i'm trying to do:

i have an one input text box, first i type text into it and press space bar at this it will become empty and ready to accept next input from starting position, i make the text box empty by
textbox.text = "";
but the cursor not set to initial position in text box it consider "" as "space" and cursor will display after one space only, i need that cursor again move to starting position..
Using AS3 to create a basic number guessing game but for some reason the input text field won't accept text input. I can't figure out which piece of code is causing the problem and it's driving me nuts considering it's from a tutorial.
This code corresponds to a quiz question where the correct answer is either blue or green. I get the #1009 error if I input "blue". The answer "green" seems to work ok. What's wrong with my code? Is there a better way to make is so more than one answer works? Something like "blue" or "green" or "otheranswer", etc..?

I could use some help figuring out how to limit the number of characters I get on a simple math function. The line of code I am working with is below. it sends the result to a dynamic text box. How can I make it so no more than 4 characters show in the dynamic text box results?
I am having a few problems atm with flash and wondering whether I am asking too much from flash or whether I am being stupid. Basically what I am trying to achieve is a box that is 300px by 300 px, within that box I have some text that I would like to place inside. As I would like to be able to regularly update this box (its a news feed) I have linked it too a .txt file. The problems that I have come across is that flash seems to have a limit on the amount of text it will allow in a dynamic text field. As even tho I have more text in my txt document, its is not displayed. This is how I have come to the presumtion that flash must be limiting the amount of text.
Is there a character or word limit for the dynamic text box in Flash CS5? I am using Classic Text and am copying a large amount of text (about 4,700 words or 31,740 characers with spaces) into the text field, but the text is cut off at a certain point (at about 2,600 words or 17,795 characters). I'm using a UIScrollbar on the text box.The full text can be copied into Flash CS3 but not CS5 so what is going on? Did Adobe create a word limit in the new version? is there some other way around this, other than splitting up the text into 2 text fields? I should note that I cannot use TLF text for compatibility issues in case that is a possible solution.
I have a textarea in my rails application to collect content from user in a database. The rails application is further feeding that text to an XML-driven flex application.The flex application has number of fixed sized containers which wraps the text inside (from the XML created by Rails app on-the-fly), but truncates the text if it exceeds the container's height. Problem is; there is no way to present the large text in XML, so it gets adjusted automatically in the compiled flex application. And the fact is; the web-based rails app and front-tier flex app are entirely disconnected in terms of having awareness of their internal events. (like in this case; rails app has no knowledge of the overflow event for flex internal containers and relying on font-size and character/line count doesn't work in this scenario!)
Therefore, I wrote a JS function to watch and rescue the textarea's overflow situation and while setting its attributes (viz; line-height, font-size, font-family, width, height... yada yada) matching that of the flex control. The complex form in rails did the trick to have dynamic number of such textarea's control being observed by the JS function.Here is the Prototype code to handle the overflow event with the corresponding rescue code for cleanup:

Is there a way to get the scrollHeight and offsetHeight of the control created by tinyMCE?Is there a way to get the only-text version (without markup) of inner content of tinyMCE control?(So, when I truncate the text in check_limits function, it doesn't effect/breaks the markup/DOM created by tinyMCE for the formatted text. In other words, I would be simulating the user action of pressing backspace on tinyMCE control in the while loop.)
I need to put together an editable text area that has a custom caret (cursor) which is different from the default blinking vertical line. Is the caret a "skinnable" property of text input? note that I am not asking about the mouse pointer cursor which can be set using the CursorManager.
I do not want to have it scroll. For example if the field has four lines and the user is writing the fourth line, and give such ENTER or continue typing until no longer fit on this line, I do not want to be created in the fifth line text field. It has to do it?
I am trying to limit then number of characters in a dynamic text box, but its just not working. I am loading the text from an external xml file and thought that this might be the problem, but to be honest it shouldnt be really... I have put this code inside the movie clip:
A have a big chunk of dynamic text (from a db). From this text i am making a .pdf. So i would like to limit the amount of outputted text as a page can run out of space.
I have tried to do it with search and replace. But the problem is that it counts only characters instead of characters in combination with whitespace and the number of lines.
There is space for 100 characters/spaces on each line, and a total of 38 lines on one page.
So i am thinking of something like this: * count all new lines represented by
* count all characters/whitespaces dived to the number of lines to check if this fits the number of (as it uses wordwap)
Anyone with bright ideas on how to approach this?
(btw. TextField.maxChars will not work as it's dynamic text...)
Trying to format input text fields using format buttons in Actionscript has been challenging. I've been able to put some pieces together, however I am still missing some things. Here's my code:

I need the ability to click the Bold button and it bolds or unbolds at the cursor so if I hit the bold button what I type from that point on will be bold until I hit the button again and then it goes back to regular. I am able to change it to bold or unbold by selecting the text and clicking the button but I also need to do it without selecting.
I have 4 dynamic text boxes which duplicates the text from a main input text box. How do I write a code to make visible only the dynamic text box I want when clicked it's check box.What is the CODE to make each "DYNAMIC TEXTBOX" visible when clicked on it's checkbox?
I've had a Flash website up and running for about a year which includes an external text file linked to a dynamic text field.
Everything worked well until I recently added content to the external text file.
Suddenly, the file won't load in flash.
If I play around and cut a line here or there, it sometimes loads. Sometimes not. Sometimes it looks like there might be a character limit. Sometimes it looks like flash might be having a problem with certain characters.
So my questions are:
1.) Does Flash have a limit on the amount of characters that can be displayed in a dynamic field.
So I've got one more problem because the font size limit on 127px I need to scale my dynamic text so it can be bigger. So here the code I tought could work: this.createEmptyMovieClip("text1_mc",1);
I want is to take a the text from and input text box and when you press a submit button have it post to a php page. All was going well... but then I changed my code from value1 = "password" to value1 = password.text; and the php instead of coming back with the user's password, comes back undefined. WHY WHY WHy, does it except it when I say value1 = "password" and not with the value1 = password.text; (and 'password' is the instance name of the input text... (not using flash vars)
