ActionScript 3.0 :: MovieClip Class To Load Its Symbol To Stage
Oct 1, 2009
In order to make it very simple, I have simplified the code as below:
Code:
Test_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, TestHandler);
function TestHandler(e:MouseEvent):void
{
[Code]....
In this case, parent= NULL error shows up.
My requirement is just to load the MC on to the stage.

How do you access an instance of a symbol created and added to the stage through the addChild(); method, from a different class?

When you attach a movieclip taken from the symbol library to the Stage, by using the attachMovie function and its Linkage name, do you have to - previously - place a dummy instance of the mc anywhere on that Stage to get it works ?

i have a MainTimeLine.as Document Class using as3 in flash cs4.it beginning looks like:[code]where the as file is declared in the Document Class of the primary fla file. under this primary fla file, i have a MovieClip symbol which points to another fla file. well this file declares a Class Linkage and i can access the properties and objects of the embedded symbol fine from the MainTimeLine.as script file.however, i have the above public player variable defined, as shown above, in the MainTimeLine.as code.i am having trouble accessing the player properties/methods from the embedded symbol fla file. how do i do that?

I have been working on code updation project wherein initially we had an image and text as movieclips in fla library. The image and the text are read by the actionscript program which then creates an animation.[code]...
I want to ease the updation process by giving the url of the image in an XML file. Read the image url from the xml and load this image in the library of the fla as movieclip. This, i think, will result in less code change and improve the updation of the final animation image.
The problem i am facing is not been able to figure out how can i change the image (after fetching its URL) to a movieclip and then load it in the library?

Is there a way to refer to a Movieclip on the stage from a class file of the document class
Lets say I have 3 MovieClips on the stage(a Circle, a Square and a Triangle)
I have the document class which calls another class that controls the MC on the stage
Example
ActionScript Code:
package {
public class Example extends Sprite {
//Create the instance of the class being called
[Code]....

Running Flash CS3, I've reviewed the lynda.com tutorial on building particle systems in ActionScript 3.0 to try and build some shooting sparks in an animation.I'm getting stuck at what I think is a really elementary point, but I can't seem to get past it.
Basically, all I'm trying to do at this point is create a class called Particle (which I will teach to do things that particles do a little later) link it to a MovieClip on the stage in my .fla file and use the particle's update function to move it across the stage in a manner defined in the instance (so I can later give different movement properties to each AS generated instance of the MC). I know there are easier ways to accomplish my base task without loading an external package, but this seems so strightforward that I must be doing something very simple wrong I just can't see so I thought I'd post the code here and see what I'm missing.
I start with a file called Particle.as in the same folder as my Spark Test.fla file.
In Particle.as I have the following code:
package{ import flash.display.*; public class Particle extends MovieClip { public xVelocity:Number; public yVelocity:Number; public function Particle() { xVelocity = 0; yVelocity = 0; } public function update():void { this.x += xVelocity; this.y += yVelocity; } }}
So I'm declaring that all particles are built with no motion, but if they are explicitly granted an x or y velocity, they will move by that much when the instance's update function is called in the timeline.
Then in my Spark Test.fla file, I have a small shape in a MovieClip called Spark. In the Linkage properties of Spark I have chosen to Export for ActionScript and Export in FIrst Frame. The class is called Spark and the Base class is Particle. For testing purposes I've dropped an instance on the stage and called it spark. Then in the actions layer in the first frame (the timeline is just the spark layer and the actions layer, one frame long each with no "stop();" so it should run forever) I have included the following code:
spark.xVelocity = 5;spark.yVelocity = -1;
function updateSpark(event:Event):void{ spark.update();}
addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, updateSpark);
What it looks like this should do is on each ENTER_FRAME Flash should call updateSpark which is a function that runs the update() event for the spark instance which is a instance of a movieclip that has an update event which moves x and y position by their relative velocity variables. This all seems pretty straightforward to me, but when I ctrl-Enter to test the movie, I get the following 3 compiler errors:
Particle.as Line 1: 5000: The class 'Particle' must subclass 'flash.display.MovieClip' since it is linked to a library symbol of that type.
Particle.as Line 7: 1071: Syntax error: expected a definition keyword (such as function) after attribute public, not xVelocity.
Particle.as Line 7: 1084: Syntax error: expecting rightbrace before semicolon.

Basically there's an object in a movieclip. I want to find the location of that object in relation to the movieclip, not of the object's symbol. So when i look at the x and y of it, it wont show 0, it will show the x and y location in the movieclip it's in.

I would really like a class that i can use to load all my movieclips from.I have 100's of external swfs - and i want to load them to stage from one class - as they are requested.I did manage to do it one way, to get access to the stage i did this:
Actionscript Code:
private var _stage:Stage;
and in the constructor code, just did:[code]...........
how to actually load the swfs, what i'm really looking for is a way to use addChild to the stage from within my class.

I know how to load an xml data into the stage by using one class from library However, rite now, I have 3 customer_mc with class for each:[code] how can i put three customer mc into the for loop? Do I put it in an array? Do you mind give me an example? I want to link the xml to each character classes,like char 1 is the first <customer> tag from the xml data. I know the logic, but to put it in the code is hard for me since im pretty new Second, I don't want it to be put randomly on the stage but only on the right corner of the stage. Is that mean, I put a precise coordinate for the customers mc?

Library symbol "Card" is linked to class "Card" which extends "MovieClip". Library symbol "Card" contains a card background image.Library symbol "Ace" is linked to class "Ace", which extends class "Card". Library symbol "Ace" contains a TextField with a big letter "A".So we have Ace extends Card which extends MovieClip. Ace therefore extends MovieClip, but does not DIRECTLY extend MovieClip.When I drop an instance of Ace on the stage and compile the clip, all that shows up is the big letter A. However, I expected the background image from Card to be included, since Ace extends Card, and the Card symbol contains the background.It seems like Flash ignores symbol content unless it belongs to the top-level class being instantiated.I think it's LAME that one symbol can't extend another. The IDE could easily draw Card as a non-editable background while I'm editing Ace which extends it, and it should instantiate Card's content and then Ace's content when an Ace is instantiated.

Does anyone know if it's possible to link a MovieClip on the stage to a class? I have a MovieClip on the stage called: square_mc and I have this Move class (see attached code). Of course when I set the class linkage of square_mc to the Move class, square_mc moves down the screen, Move is working. But how would I attach the Move class to square_mc at runtime, when it's on the stage?

I'd like to know how I can reference root stage values from within a movieclip, or even worse, from a class. For example, I have a class called Bground.as. It does stuff, according to current stage size - so if someone were to resize the window/browser, Background updates in real time and does something fancy while it's at it. To do this "fancyness", I need stageheight and stagewidth. However, simply pointing to them does not work.
Here's the simplified ActionScript Code:
package klaseFP{
// imports
import flash.events.*;
import flash.display.*;
public class Bground extends MovieClip{
[Code] .....
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at klaseFP::Bground()
at FullScreen_03_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()
Background works as a document class, works perfectly in fact. However, if I use it as the class of a library object, error 1009 shows up. Same thing happens if I simply put the code into the timeline of the library object - stage referencing simply causes it to break. So, how do I dynamically change the values of variables in Background, according to values in the main movie/app?

I'm getting really tired of AS3 now because I cant get it to do basic things like hit tests which were so easy in AS2. Basically, I generate a number of fish of varying scale, speeds and directions using this on the first frame of the timeline and the constructor function in the fish.as file:
ActionScript Code:
function DisplayFish() {
for (var i:int = 0; i < 20; i++) {
var newFish:fish = new fish();
this.addChild(newFish);
[Code] .....
What I want to do is rather than setting a max / min x/y use a hit test with a side wall MC on the stage, and a hit test between this instance of fish and all other fishes so they bounce off each other. I've tried so many ways of hit testing from within the class with MCs on stage but just cant get it to work.
ActionScript Code:
if(this.hitTestObject(root.LeftWall)){
directionX = 1;
}

If you put a moviecilp on the stage and then write a class that extends movieclip, is it possible to make it so that this references inside your class refer to the movieclip on stage.
E.g. this.x would refer to the x reference of the movieclip on stage.

1.I have a MovieClip in the Library. There is a named and dynamic text box in the MovieClip. In Frame 1 of the .fla, I construct the MovieClip from the class StatusBoard and add it to the stage. There is one setStatus method in the class to set the text. This works fine.[code]
2.I have a bunch of buttons that I created from a class called LinkButton.as (they are MovieClips, not _btn buttons). FWIW, they are attached to other MovieClips, but they work fine. The trace output is fine. What I am trying to do is have the rollover change the text in the billboard.[code]
3. In lay terms, I used addChild to add a MovieClip with a dynamic TextField to the stagw and I want MovieClip buttons created from an .as class to be able to change the text on a rollover.What I can't seem to do is actually reference the billboard that I added using addChild from the .fla.The buttons work and trace the desired text, I can't seem to send that text to the billboard.

I've created a custom class (not the document class, otherwise there would be no problem) and I want to be able to access a MovieClip that is sitting on the stage.
How? MovieClip(parent), MovieClip(root)... don't work. What's the proper procedure?
Also, can I pass the MovieClip from the Document Class to another custom Class?

I am trying to get an instance of a class to the load an external swf and show it.So far I have the following:
1) I wrote a class that uses the Loader class to load an external swf "loadExtSWF".
2) I have a fla named "MainSWF.fla" that uses a document class "MainSWF.as".
3) I have the MainSWF.as file that instances "loadExtSWF" and calls loadExtSWF.startLoad to load the swf.
This almost works. The instance of loadExtSWF loads the external swf, but the swf is not displayed.If I replace the fla's document class with loadExtSWF (this has an empty constructor) instead of MainSWF, and run loadExtSWF.startLoad, then the external swf is loaded and displayed.[code]
