ActionScript 3.0 :: Override Class Method With Dynamic Function?
Oct 7, 2009
override a custom class method with a function expression? For instance, if I want to change the destination of a button on the fly, I could theoretically type:
Code:
var new_destination:Function = function(evt:Event):void{ go_to_new_place();};
myButtonClass.mouse_clicked = new_destination;
but unfortunately that generates an error because the class method "mouse_clicked" is already defined in my class (with the eventListener tied to it). I tried using the "override" keyword in the Function Expression but that didn't work either.

This is for a playbook app. I have two classes:
public dynamic class Bullet extends Sprite {
public function update():void {
x += 5;
y += 5;
[Code]...
This is essentially what I'm trying to do. What's the best way to achieve this in actionscript?

Is it possible to override/replace a method of a class in AS3? When I say "replace", I don't mean subclass it and override it. I mean I literally want to replace the existing method with my own. For instance, AS3 has the built-in HTMLLoader class which has a load method. I want to say, in essence:
HTMLLoader.load = function() { trace("Overridden"); };
Therefore, when *anybody* makes a new HTMLLoader object and calls the load method, it will call my method instead.
I've tried a couple things, and so far I've gotten this far:
HTMLLoader.prototype.load = function() { trace("Overridden") };
And I compile it with -as3=false -es=true -strict=false. The problem is it doesn't override the already-existing load method. It looks in the class first before looking in the prototype, thus making it not work. There must be a way. Even if I can't override it, can I proxy it like a decorator in Python or a macro in LISP? (So mine gets called then it gets called.)

I have learned that there is a class called Function which is used as a blueprint for all as3 functions. Is there a way to override the call() function within the function class so that a trace can be made when any/every function is called?

I have two child classes ClassA and ClassB both inherit the same base class.
I also have a function that has a parameter which could be an instance of either child classes.
function Test(instance):void //instance is either a ClassA or ClassB instance
{
instance.DoSomething();
}
However, when I run the test, it's always the BaseClass.DoSomething() get called. How can I use the same function (DoSomething()), but call child class function instead of the base class one?

Is it possible to externally override a public function of a class (as opposed to override via inheritance)?
For example:
Code:
Class Foo {public function doFoo():void {trace ("Foo");
}
}
Such that:
[Code]...
I know this is possible in JavaScript and ECMAScript, but the compiler won't let me get away with this kind of mischief in ActionScript, from what I've seen: It barfs up a 1168 Illegal Assignment error as soon as I attempt to assign a new function to doFoo.
I'm thinking specifically in terms of a "hot fix" solution where you deploy a small swf that replaces a specific chunk of code in a larger application, without the need to recompile/deploy the full application (or even see the sourcecode for that matter, just know the API).

I'm having some troubles with the use of interface and inheritance in AS3. I've done lots of OOP in the past and what I'm trying to do seems obvious to me, but doesn't work in AS3. The question is : Is it possible to override a function that return an Object of class A, and make it return an Object of Class B which extends A ? It seems not to be possible, since I'm getting a signature error in Flash, when compiling. For example, the following set of class do not compile (the code in function definition doesn't matter):

Is it possible for a class to override it's own methods at runtime? I know this is possible to do in JavaScript by simply assigning a new function to the method name, but this doesn't appear to work in AS3.
Example: Let's say I have a DisplayObject with many accessors and methods. The user is allowed to load a dynamic library that overrides several of the functions and methods in the DisplayObject. As author of the DisplayObject, I have no idea what methods the user's library is going to override... only that they can. IS this possible?
The only thing I can come up with so far is to literally override every single method and accessor in the DisplayObject, then performing a check whenever they get called:

I'm using flash to draw objects, then I export them and use them from flex, and I'm a beginner in flash.
I'm trying to do the override a method from the MovieClip I created. The method I'm trying to override is stop() method. I didn't write a single line of code, my movie clip is created using entirely the flash interface. I figured out how to add actions to the movie clip when a frame is reached but I'm stucked now when I'm trying to override a MovieClip method.

Well, basically, you know the question already What bugs me is that I cannot get an answer to this because compiler doesn't like overriding internal functions in different packages, but, I would like to know what you think it should do, if it would have compiled?
I.e. imagine: I have foo.bar:A class and foo.abc:B class. Then foo.abc:B extends foo.bar:A.
foo.bar:A defines internal function f(). foo.abc:B overrides internal function f(). Now, the question: Can foo.abc.C call foo.abc:B#f()?

I've a custom itemRenderer for my datagrid. To set the actual data I use the following method:
override public function set data(side:Object):void{
...
}
As soon as I use this function the cell doesn't show up any item Editor anymore. Why is that? When I remove this function the itemEditor is working but with the wrong initialization data.

I'm totally new to Adobe Flex Builder 3. I've been assigned a fully functional project but when I want to add the simplest function to any class, I always got the same error :
Call to a possibly undefined method through a reference with static type
For example, in some random class there is a function defined like this :
public function GetID() : String { return m_strID; }
If I try to define a new one like below :
public function GetIDFoo() :String { return m_strID; }
And then I try to call both of them like this:
trace ("This line is ok : " + oPhysicalScreen.GetID());
trace ("This line gives me an error : " + oPhysicalScreen.GetIDFoo());
[Code] .....

is there a way to extend a function, or override it, without having to rewrite the whole function. e.g would it be possible to add a simple trace statement at the beginning/end of the addChild() function. im looking for something similar to super() in constructor. just as i dont have to rewrite the whole constructor of the class that i extend, but i can add my own code, then call super(). ive read something about prototypes and that they could be possible solutions.

It's coming from this line of code:var dropTargetXML:XML = XMLTemplate.template.component.section.question.(@question_questionID == nNode.parent().@question_questionID)[0];nNode is an XML node sent as an argument to the function this is called in. The code runs,and does everything expected but the compiler sends out that warning. Do I have some formatting issue?P.S. I've tried telling it that it's XML like this:var dropTargetXML:XML = XMLTemplate.template.component.section.question.(@question_questionID == XML(nNode).parent().@question_questionID)[0];

I have a simple quesiton about class, method and functions inside a method and class properties. I created a new class form my custom component.. But upon developing it I found out that you can not access a property inside the function which is also inside a method..
Example
Code:
class myClass{
private var myProperty:Number = 1; //default is 1
//constructor
public function myClass(){
}//Method
[Code] .....
What I want to do is to access the property inside the method.. I also have a work-around still i cannot point a certain variable to a property of my class inside the method's function..

I trying here to avoid having to bind resources to all my components labels ( ie a button) and find a way to have this automated.
Problem: It corrupts the layout in design mode to bind directly in the mxml label="{resourceManager.getString('myResources', 'submit')}" and makes the design view useless. but when declaring bindings elsewhere, in actionScript or via a bind tag, it is counter productive and prone to many errors and miss.
Proposition: I would like to create my own button that automatically invoke resources to localize a button label. So the author puts "Submit" in the mxml description of my button, and when running it would take the value of the label ie "submit" and use resourceManager.getString('myResources', 'submit').
but I can't find the way to override the set label function, Is it possible if yes how? else how can I go about it?
Maybe I am missing an essential process here that would make the use of resources more elegant, as well as how to override such thing as a button's label.

The current implementation of the Flash Player ApplicationDomain with regards to override class definition seems like a giant security flaw to me.A parent SWF has complete control over what child SWF they want to load and add to its ApplicationDomain. It stands to reason that if the parent trust the child SWF enough to load the file, it should also trust the class definition defined by the child SWF and use those definitions.
In contrast, a child SWF has no control over where it is being loaded into, or if it want to be loaded into another SWF at all. Therefore, there is no reason for the child SWF to trust the class definitions defined by the parent SWF.I recommend changing the current implementation of the ApplicationDomain and allowing a child SWF to override any conflicting class definition in the parent's ApplicationDomain.
