ActionScript 3.0 :: TextField - How To Get Rotated Vertical Text
Sep 9, 2010
Using textfields. I need vertical text, rotated so that you could read it from bottom up. I can do it with static textfields, but I need to change the content of the textfield, so I cant use static textfield class. What other options are there? I've heard something about embedding fonts does the trick. The thing with embedding the font....I read that if it works, it increases the swf size quite significantly. Atm I am using a very narrow text field with multiline so that one letter is on a separate line, but it doesnt look good and I need to change it.

What I'm trying to do is to position the text in the top part of a combo box vertically. I need to make the height of the textfield section a minimum amount because of touchscreen considerations. It's taller than appropriate for the font size I've chosen.
I know how to reference the textField element of the combo box, so my actual question is can I position the text so that it is centered vertically in a textField? I've seen several of the formatting options, but just haven't stumbled across a setting that allows me to change the default "top justification" that textFields get for their text.

Does the TextField class support automatic vertical centering of multiline text? Any way to control vertical alignment other than "flush top"?
It seems like it ought to, but if there is a method or property in the class that turns it on, I can't find it. (Maybe a case of not being able to see the trees for the forest, there's so much junk in there, plus the TextFormat...)

I'm just trying to make a sprite follow the last letter of a TextField with the getCharBoundaries() function. It works fine when the DisplayObject that contains the TextField has no 3d transformations on it. But when I rotate it in 3D, returned values are wrong and it doesn't work anymore.I don't know anything about the matrix objects and all those transformation functions but I guess there is a way to get the correct value by using one of those matrices.I tried to use some matrices and played with some of their values but didn't get any luck.

i found i can get vertical dynamic text block by setting to vertical and then to dynamic. But, then it ends up being horizontal, and if inside a clip, only the letters over another item in clip show. Like veritcal text on a vertical bar gives only the 1 or 2 letters that fit across bar, rest truncated. i've tried embedding text to get this far, but still doesn't work 'all the way' i see online they talk about all scripting for dynamic, vertical text; is that necessary, or am i missing something??

How do you get a textfield to resize in the vertical direction? Basically I have text being dynamically loaded from PHP into a series of dynamically created text boxes. Each new text box is placed below the previous one to create a list.The problem is that in some text boxes there will be more text content than others. So rather than fix the textboxes height and end up with irregular gaps between each one. I need them to stretch and shrink individually.

When I select the text tool in Flash and click on screen to type, my text box is default rotated 90Ëš clockwise. In addition, the text is default bottom aligned so when you hit return, the next line is above the first line. So, simply rotating it back doesn't
Even my properties box align buttons are rotated: I should add that the little rotation button you see for "orientation" is not the fix- it rotates individual letters.I can't find anything in the menus, toolbars or preferences to change this...

Is there a way to control the vertical space between two HTML paragraphs, in an AS3 TextField?
I understand and have successfully applied CSS styles via AS3 and have also utilized the TextFormat class.
I am still unable to control the vertical space between a closing and an opening <p> tag: txt.htmlText = "<p>First paragraph here.</p><p>Second paragraph here.</p>"; The example above renders with the correct font and letter-spacing, but the space between paragraphs is either two-times too tall if txt.condenseWhite = false or it is too condensed if txt.condenseWhite = true.
Since only margin-left and margin-right are available CSS attributes in AS3, and not margin-top or margin-bottom, I am at a loss.

I have the following code:
Code:
this.createTextField ("imageText",2,95,0,390,96);
imageText.multiline = true;
imageText.wordWrap = true;[code].....
The problem:If I uncomment either of the imageText.embedFonts lines, my text will disappear... but the trace(imageText.text); will still return the correct contents. It's as though embedFonts causes the textField to disappear.Possibly related, (but maybe not), is the fact that the vertical positioning of the font is off. Even though I create the textField at Y = 0, the text writes somewhere around Y = 10. I suspect this is something else, but I thought I'd add it just in case.

I am having a problem with my text alignment and I can't figure out a way to correct this. Unfortunately, I'm using a mac with CS3 and a Windows computer with CS4, so it could either be an OS difference, a version difference, or a software bug which I can't figure out.
For some reason, the text on my Mac with CS3 are not in the vertical center of the text fields. This causes a problem with my "align vertical centers" alignments, meaning I've had to do the alignment by hand to get it to look right. When I moved my file to my laptop to keep working on my project at home, I noticed that the text alignment was correct on my laptop, causing all of the text placement throughout my document to be off. This means that I can only work on the one computer and can't bring the project home to work through the weekends.
I have made an image showing the difference of how the text is aligned on the two versions, and a sample of how it affects my project when i bring it between computers.
I made the file on the mac (CS3) first, and so the alignment is designed to look correct on there. When i bring it to the PC (CS4) the text shifts down, placing it back in the center of the text boxes and ruining the alignment.
When I publish the file it keeps the formatting of each system. IE - publishing on the mac makes the final product look like it does on the mac, and publishing on the windows computer makes it look like it looks on the windows computer. The file published from the mac has the mac alignment on both computers, and the file published from the pc has the alignment of the pc on both computers.

Update: I downloaded a trial CS4 and the problem persists. This seems to be a mac issue. Just to clarify, the way flash handles text fields on windows / cs4 is how I imagine it should be. I made the file on mac/CS3 however, and so when i said "ruins the alignment" I should have said "fixes the alignment problem, but breaks my alignment which was made to compensate for the problem I was experiencing."

Unfortunately I need the symbols to have vertical text.

I have a dynamic textfield that I am creating in an as3 class. It's a set pixel height.Sometimes it will have up to three lines, but sometimes only one. I know there is not vertical align property. But what would be the solution for aligning this to the bottom? In as2 there was a way to count lines. But I'm having trouble finding that in as3. Not to mention, once I have a line count, how will I shift it down

I have a flash-application (done with CS4) in which a particular Textbox, which is vertical fails to display characters with a hacek (ˇ) on top. If such a character appears with in a string that is to be shown, it is simply dropped, leaving the string crippled.
This baffles me since characters with hacek work on other (horizontal) textfields in the same .swf with the same Font (Arial) work just fine. I also tried manually telling flash to embed these characters for this textfield, but to no avail. Even entering characters with hacek in the flash IDE works without problems.
I am not very familiar with flash, this application has been developed by a co-worker who is no longer employed here.

I've got a three year old site in actionscript 2 and something odd happened today.I had to change something in the fla, tested the swf and uploaded it to the server. When I test the swf in flash or just open it manually, all is fine, texts are okay.But whenever it's in a htmlpage (using swfobject or the standard flash method), all the multiline textfields turn from horizontal to vertical expanding text, so a large column of 1 character.Even my backup site acts the same way. It's driving me crazy. And my client.I installed a couple of new browsers a couple of days ago, and I remember I had to update my flashplayer. Maybe this is relevant? I just don't know.
