ActionScript 3.0 :: Find The Width Of An External Swf File That Loading In
Apr 2, 2010
I have loaded in an external swf file and it works fine.
However, when I get the width dimensions of the movieclip that is housing the external swf file it gives me a '0' for the width.

I am trying to load an external swf file. The swf width and height is small and I want to enlarge it when loading it. (My scene has large width and height). My current code could load the file but I am not sure how to enlarge the swf width and height.
var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("index.swf");
var loader:Loader = new Loader()
loader.load(request);
addChild(loader);

How can I get the width of an externally loaded picture? I have this:
Code:
pic_mc.loadMovie("images/pic.jpg");
pic_mc.onEnterFrame = function() {
if (this._width) {
trace(this._width);
}
}
but it is not working. I've also tried calling this.getBytesLoaded/Total within the onEnterFrame and as ic_mc.getBytesLoaded alone, but it returns 4 and my picture is 40k. I've also tried pic_mc.onLoad, but it never advances. I think it is trying to get the width before it loads, but how do I prevent that?

How can I find the width of an external jpg BEFORE it's been loaded into my movie? I can easily find the width of it AFTER loading by loading it into an empty movie clip and returning the width of this AFTER the jpg has loaded using the _width command. But what I want is to find the width BEFORE loading.I have tried "trace(1.jpg._width);" but this returns undefined, obviously as 1.jpg is not an object from my library, it's an external file. Any other ideas anyone?!

I have an app that "loadmovies" a slideshow.swf in a sub-folder. THis sub-folder also contains an xml file and numbered jpgs.But when I run the main app, and click on the button to load the sub SWF files, the images do not appear. I assume it is a directory issue.
But if I run the slideshow.swf directly from it's folder, the images appear fine.I am using the xml_photogallery from this site for the main actionscript, is there something I can change here to point to the jpgs path?

I am loading a swf into another swf. The swf I am loading has objects off the stage, and when i load the swf into the other it shows the objects off the stage and screws up my positioning logic. Is there any way to load the swf and hide all the objects that arent on the stage?

I have purchased an image gallery program that works fine but I am struggling to make a very minor modification. I have asked the author for assistance but previous requests have met with no response so I am also asking my question here. This program has most of its logic in an external AS2 file. I have made some small changes to this file and want to save it under a new name. However, that would also require me to change the reference to the external AS2 file from within the fla file. That's where my problem lies. I can't find any code in the fla that contains such a reference.
If I try to publish an swf without this file in the required location it causes a compiler error thus proving that there must be a reference somewhere to that file. However, doing a search for this AS2 file in the 'current document' when viewing the fla file in Flash CS4 produces no results. Where else could this reference be hidden?

I'm updating a Flash program that has 3 different txt containing code. The FLA has different parts in the program that calls upon these file, but when I try to export to SWF to test the program, I get a compiler error, saying those files can't be found.
All of the files have been transferred from another computer, so I don't know some directory extension is broken, but the script that refers to the text files, doesn't include a directory address, just the name of the respective file it's calling on.

I am working with a cms tool, and I can't get my swf to find my external css file. Is there anyway I can embed the css in the swf without calling an external file? This is what my action script looks like, and it works from my desktop, but everytime I bring the swf into the cms tool, it doesn't work.

I am creating an upload and view function for my canvas website. The website lets you upload an image and view what it would look like on the wall. As the images are dynamically loaded I need to find the width of the image so that I can position it in the correct place.
The dynamic images are loaded into an empty movie clip called _root.canvas_preview
The code below works fine for finding the width of jpeg's when loaded into the canvas_preview movie but returns no value when the images are gif's, PNG etc. Does anyone know why this is or could suggest another way of finding the width of a dynamic movie clip. I am using Flash 8[code]...

What I want to happen is a movieclip of text aligns 20px to the right of the loaded img, similar to what padding does in css, the code I am using is: textFields._x = (picture._width+20); textFields is the movieclip of text and the image is loading into picture
What actually happens is the the text aligns to picture._width but before the image the image has loaded or I am not telling it the right place to look for ._width
I'll include the .fla in for convenience

Trying to do a scroll effect of some images I am loading in from an xml file. Problem is I need to limit the amount of scroll based on the width of the images - the number of images is controlled by the client and can vary. The problem is the actionscript does not seem to be able to detect the width of the combined images - heres the scroll code...

Suppose I have a (Spark) label. What is the best way to find the length of the text in it? I looked at the myLable.measureText("bla bla") method but it says: To measure text in Spark components, get the measurements of a spark.components.Label or spark.components.RichTextfter looking around I cannot find what this is refering to. I tried myLabel.measureWidth() but this does not return anything usefull (it frequently returns zero). Note: I am explicitly setting the width like this:<s:Lable width="{globalWidthVariable"} .../>If the text overflows I would like to increse the globalWidthVariable to the size of the text.

loading another file, in this case an .spt file. how start this code. Its a file that can be loaded from any PC and not just a file in the same folder, I don't think using a URLLoader would work, because the .spt would have to be in the same folder, and thats not what I need.

Is there a way to _xscale and _yscale external .swf after loading them? Is there a way to 'talk' to the external .swf file after loading and placing it on the stage? By this I mean: will I be able to send variables/commands/functions back and forth from the playing movie and the external .swf file?

The .swf is still very very basic as of now, but im making a little file that keeps you up to date with NYC weather. The problem is it has to read off an external XML file at: [URL]
I tried using the tutorial on kirupa.com with using a .php file to act as a "middleman" for this. First I tried the tutorial at Adobe's website but that had no effect, and neither did the tutorial on Kirupa... Mind you I've tried this locally and it worked fine, when i upload it to the web it never loads the xml file.
I attached the .fla and .php file to this post, you can see the .swf at work (rather, not working) at:
