ActionScript 3.0 :: Get The Hang Of The Intricacies Of Arrays?
Dec 13, 2011
still trying to get the hang of the intricacies of arrays. I have two questions:
1. referencing variables with function inputs. Say for example i do this:
Code:
myfunction(input:Array):Array
{
var myvariable:int;
[Code].....
of these three codeblocks. what is most correct ? i'm rather fuzzy about when i should use "new", and whether or not i need to explicitly cast from arrays.

I have an issue with the attached project (Flash 8). On the rollOver event, the shapes are supposed to turn yellow. On the rollOut event, the shapes should fade back to blue.It works well except in the case when you quickly rollOver then rollOut several times (try it with the largest shape at the bottom). If you do it fast enough, it seems to get hung on 'blue', the initial color.

I'm very much a noob in terms of actionscripting (I use MX), and I was wondering if I could enlist your aid. For right now, I'm trying to get the hang of Duplicated MC's. Right now, my practice animation is like this: A one frame movie clip with actionscript tweening a black ball. Basically, my AS just makes it move to the right as it gets smaller and fades with alpha. This part works fine.
I put this above movie clip (ball, let's call it) in another MC. Now this MC (let's call it BallTween) has AS on it which duplicates the ball movie clip 30 times with a for loop (q is my incrementing variable). Now I read a tutorial on a forum that suggested using a mc = _parent['newball'+q] to control the duplicated movie clips as they are generated, but this doesn't seem to be working for me. Is there any really comprehensive tutorial on this kind of AS around? I would really like to get good at manipulating duplicateMovieClips. Does anybody have a simple way to do this from the ground up, instead of solving a problem in an existing flash project?

In the attached file, for some reason, when the menus drop down, they frequently get hung up. (stay down, slow to move back up into the hidden position, etc.)

I am attempting to insert text from a database into a custom TextArea component, using the following:
var front:CaptionTextArea = myFlashcardFrontsides[adjIndex] as CaptionTextArea;
var back:CaptionTextArea = myFlashcardBacksides[adjIndex] as CaptionTextArea;
var passage:CaptionTextInput = myVersePassages[adjIndex] as CaptionTextInput;
front.text = passage.text;
back.text = str;
This works 100% of the time for smaller strings. However, if I insert long strings of text, the application will hang consistently. The maxchars for the textarea is set to 1200, and the text that is inserted into the text area is always smaller than the character limit:
backside.maxChars = 1200;

We are using FMS3.5 for VOD streaming. It's spotted that when we are using Flash Player Version = WIN 10.0.42.34/10,0,45,2, it is encountered that the video picture is hang but audio keeps playing after our commercial break point. we will first pause the video content and then use the same object to play the instream ad. After that, the video is resume when instream ad complete.

I have a photo gallery that is XML based. In IE everything works fine. In Firefox, the gallery will load all the thumbnails and then hang up when loading the large image. The trouble is this only happens on the galleries that have a lot of images in them. It works fine with smaller galleries. Since it's xml driven, the images are not loaded until called for and all the thumbnails get loaded. I did see a post about a var being collected for garbage if it's defined inside a function, but I've tried to limit that to just declaring a new image to be displayed. My site is: [URL]. If for some reason you get a page saying that this site is under construction, click the link to the gallery again. I don't know why that keeps bringing up an old page.

I'm having a problem that I'm not sure is necessarily tied to the Flash, but I don't know what the root of the problem is yet.I have a SWF that connects to a socket using the Socket class. This works fine.I'm also making (jQuery) $.getJSON() requests to load certain page data. This works fine.
However, when the Flash socket is connected the Ajax requests stop being sent. By this I mean that it seems that the HTTP requests being made are stored in a queue while the socket is connected. As soon as I disconnect from the socket the HTTP requests continues to load fine. The HTTP request never times out (as it's not even being sent to the server), but just hangs there waiting...until I close the socket connection.
I've verified both in the jQuery and Adobe docs that both the Ajax (JSONP) requests and the connections using the Socket class are asynchronous, so I'm really confused as to why the socket connection would block the HTTP requests.

I was trying to load an external SWF (that contains the below code in its document class) with the Loader class but i keep on receiving Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. So i tried to use the event listener Event.ADDED in MyDocumentClass constructor of the external SWF to let the document class be part of the display list before i invoke createRandomGraph. But when i place createRandomGraph( ) inside onStageReady, The compilation process hangs. When i leave the createRandomGraph( ) inside the constructor, it works perfectly as stand alone but will produce Error 1009 if loaded within the loader SWF
public function MyDocumentClass( )
{
this.addEventListener(Event.ADDED, onStageReady);

Since i upgraded to Flashplayer 9.0.124.0 i've noticed that using textures on 3D Objects via the beginBitmapFill method and setting the smooth attribute to 'true' causes the player to hang a few milliseconds at random. Setting smooth to 'false', the player runs without any hang. I tested this on different machines. An upgrade to player 10 beta didn't cure the symptoms but the hangs appear less in time. Has anyone else such problems or an idea what is going on?

I am running into some trouble adding an array into another array to create a multi-dimensional array.The code appears as below:
var slideDataArray:Array = new Array();
var slideShowDataArray:Array = new Array();
slideDataArray[0] = xmlData.SlideShowParameters.SlideShowImagesDirectory;[code]........
I am looking for a means of placing the slideDataArray into a 'slot' or value of slideShowDataArray so that I can in the end pass the slideShowDataArray as a parameter to another function.As of now, the last slideDataArray appears 11 times (the loop runs 11 times) in slideShowDataArray and the way the code is written the slideDataArray is unique every iteration of the loop.

I've got a bit that loads a big chunk of xml data about products.I push product info into an array(e.g. productArray), then add that array to another array (e.g. allProductsArray)How do I sort those arrays? For instance, if I want to sort the allProductsArray based on the info in productArray[0]?Alternatively, would something other tha an array of arrays be a better route?This loader loads the same sort of info for many different clients, so the bit to sort on will change.

I'm trying to write a function where I can specify any amount of array, and the return value will be an array containing the contents of all of the specified arrays.I've done this, but it seems like a really slow and ugly way of doing it:
var ar1:Array = [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9];
var ar2:Array = ['a','b','c','d','e','f','g','h'];
function merge(...multi):Array[code].....
Is there an inbuilt and more efficient / nice way of achieving this? The result does not need to be in the same order as the input - completely unsorted is fine.

A little explanation: Im making a random arranging number Array. So instead of using a loop and assigning 0 to first array element, 1 to second, etc.I need to make it totally random but without repeating any numbers. To do that I made a second Array that will have the same number of children to serve as a reference.Each of them will be an Object with a property "num" , wich will be its actual number, and a property "called" wich defaults to false.Like this:
ActionScript Code:
for(var i:int=0;i<vQuantity;i++){
ranArray.push( new Object() );

I've had a problem for awhile that was really odd. After some intense debugging, I realized the problem lied in setting an array equal to another array.[code] When setting one array equal to another, the values aren't copied over, but a reference to that memory is stored. So no matter which variable you change, they are both references to the same memory and thus both will reflect the changes.With other data types, this doesn't happen.I could fix it by looping through t1 and using push() to add each index from t1 into t2, but that seems a little messy.

correct syntax for pushing variables to arrays within arrays? I have searched many threads but found nothing that exactly answers my query.I have a class (Brigade) which amongst other variables contains an array (BrigadeUnits) This is the third element.. My Brigades are stored in an array called AllBrigades. I now need to fill the BrigadeUnits array with objects of my Units class.The hierarchy I want to create is as follows:
AllBrigades (array of Brigades)
Brigade (object)
BrigadeUnits (array within Brigade object)
Unit (Object to be stored in BrigadeUnits array)
I have tried various approaches including the following, assuming that I am addressing the first Brigade in the array:
AllBrigades [0] [2].push (MyUnit);
But when I trace this I just get undefined.

i'm trying to use an array to attach up to 4 movie clips, using the same script. My code I'm using to attach looks like:
Code:
if(en<=4){
EA[t] = attachMovie("enemy", "enemy"+t, depth++);
EA[t]._x = random(300);
[Code]....
This part works fine, but what doesn't work is the script I try to add to the movieclips. If i add EA[t]._x += 10, then only the lastly created enemy moves. How do i make it so that all of the enemies move?
