I'm struggling shaking my old school AS2 mindset here. I've got a main swf which loads a bunch of subordinate swfs. I need my loaded swfs to see some variables in the main. For instance (example simplified for conversational purposes), let's say I've got a swf loading (we'll say littleSwf), which needs to set its rotation based on a variable (we'll say swfRotation) in the main. The rotation code is inside of the little swf. How does that little swf get told / find out what its rotation number is?

I'm importing/loading external swfs into a program, but when I get or set the width/height- it using the entire, unmasked image, and not what is visible.That makes sense, but is there anyway to either discard the masked content(crop), or only get/set the value of size of the visible image?It could be any swf, and I can't control the swf's coming in.I am importing them using flex's mx.controls.image, but have also tried a normal as3 loader with the same problem.

Im making a flash project in flash cs3 using As2.It is a large interactive game with imported external swfs throughout,Ive placed the lockroot code in all the external swfs.
When i play the external swfs on their own they play perfectly put when imported into the main.fla they don't work properly,some of the functionality doesnt work properly..As an example I have made a jigsaw game using drag n drop and targets, where the code

if(this._droptarget == "/dropTargetOne")
{
_root.dragger1.gotoAndStop("5");}
}

appears I have problems because the code _root.dragger1.gotoAndStop("5"); doesnt work when imported as an external swf.I've tried using this._parent but no success.So I think the problem is to do with using _root which I was hoping would be sorted with this._lockroot = true;

I have my main.fla which imports external swfs that contain flv's. I have three buttons that navigate the main timeline to frames 2-4. At frames 2-4 an external swf gets loaded into an empty movie clip via this code. Each loaded swf acts like a menu with some nice vidoes loading in the background.The problem i found is the flvs continue to play as i navigate between menus, which makes the main swf/fla slow down becuase the pc is working harder to deliver all the stuff running in the background. I've added this code to frame 1 of my empty movie clip that is in my library that has the instance name 'menu1'I keep getting the error "Access of undefines property mc1"I have the source files for my site here if you can take a look and see what I'm doing wrong. I have removed this code so i don't get the error and have tried other things to no avial.

I am getting a 1009 error using tweenlite. I have placed the COM folder of tweenlite in the same directory as the FLA. On the main stage I have imported the tweenlite class using:

On the main stage I have a MC called mainholdermc. When I click a button called mentions but on the main stage it basically tells mainholdermc to play. This works well. I have another movieclip called vosdes. At the same time that mainholdermc plays I want to use tweenlite to make the aplha of vosdes lower. If I put this actionscript on the main page it works fine:

I found that by using

it is the equivalent of the _root in AS2.

I was hoping for some guidelines on the general best practice for storing data from an XML document. When all is said and done, my whole flash site will be powered by XML, so I want to make sure it is organized properly. Usually what I do is parse the XML, and store all the different sets of data in arrays, but I'm sure there's a better way to do it. I'm no expert though, so I need something fairly straightforward. Here's my initial setup:

Most of the time I just get..

Allow Smoothing
Compression: Photo (JPEG) or Lossless (PNG/GIF)
Use document default quality

Not really urgent, just something that has been bugging me latley

I am working on a flash file that imports XML values into flash. I used tutorials from this forum and all worked nice. Now i would like to do one more thing but cant find solution or answer to it. Hope that you guys can help me out with it.What i want to achieve is:

I am importing 8 numbers from XML file first 4 called HOT number next 4 called COLD number and i show it in dynamic text boxes in flash file. XML changes and values in the file changes as well.I want to check if imported number is : 1 or 2 or 3 or 7 or 8 or 9 then color of imported number should be red , if number is for example 4,5,10,12,15 then color is black other numbers color green. Numbers are from 0-36 .

I have data being loaded from a php into an xml class.
 
My host (which is free for testing purposes) keeps adding data to the php file which causes errors.  I need to know how I can delete this extra text before I put the data into an XML class so I do not get the error.  I did a trace of the data and this is what comes up below.  I need everything below the </data> tag to be removed but do not know how to do this.

know if it is possible to randomize data that is imported from a .CSV file so that it displays as dynamic text in Flash?Or if there might be a thread I could be pointed to? I am using Action Script 3.I have loaded some xml data using an external as file called importxml.as.If I put a trace statement in it to access the content it works perfectly.But how do I access the data from the Flash main timeline or from another as file?I am using the statement �import xmlimport� but if I then write:trace(xmldata.category[1].word[1].text); I get the message;

1120: Access of undefined property xmldata.

If I try this on the main timeline

var myXMLmlimport=new xmlimport();

I get the error message

TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.

I need to pass and update data from a swf to an embedded loaded swf and between embedded swfs. The easiest way I can see is to put the data in a file (very small amount of data) and read from and write to the file (XML would be OK). However I cannot see how to write a file without firing off a browser window. Reading a file is fine. It is the writing that is a problem. Even cookies or similar would be OK. I can use PHP but going via the server seems OTT.

I think I must be missing a step here; I have different data being pulled from an array created from xml depending on a variable (_currentTrackNum).. and the data changes if I set a different initial value for it; but if I change the variable once the program is initialized, none of the data changes even though I rerun the call with the changed variable.[code]

I have a project where I am externally loading .swfs into my main scene.  However at the end of my external .swfs I want it to go back to the first frame of my main .swf.  I have used this code MovieClip(root).gotoAndPlay("start"); but I get this error
 
ArgumentError: Error #2109: Frame label start not found in scene Scene 1.
 
and I understand why I get the error because the frame label start isn't in that external flash file it is in the main one. However, I just don't know the correct AS3 to get this to work properly.

I cant believe that Flash will let you load data from a text file then doesn't allow you to do anything with the data other than display it. Surely there must be a way you can do something the data imported ie perform some calculations. Is this beyond Flash or is this something that has been addressed in AS3? All the tutorials I've found all stop at just displaying and 'swonking'.

I've just recently made the leap from AS2 to AS3 and after several days of reading the CS4 help and searching posts here, I'm still at a loss how to get my first AS3 project off the ground.I'm working on an illustrated choose-your-own-path story with each step split into seperate swfs to speed up loading time.I've got a main file loading a scene swf using.[code]The loading works fine (although I've just found a post that suggests I should wait until the swf loads before adding it as a child), but how would I then get the buttons in the loaded swf to tell the main swf which swf to load next?I'm stumped firstly by that, and additionally by how I should then UNload the swfs. Is it not common practice to refer to objects by their '.name' in AS3? Should I be loading the swfs into an array?

Is it possible to control a movie clip in an externally loaded swf from a button in your main swf? I have 4 buttons in my main swf. In the externally loaded swf there are 4 movie clips all with their alha set to 0. What i'm trying to do is when the user clicks button 1, movie clip 1 one the external swf changes its alpha to 1. Then if you press button 2, movie clip 1's alpha returns to 0 and movie clip to 2's alpha changes to 1.

The, buttons need to be in the main swf as there are over 20 externally loaded swf all with 4 movie clips and I cant make those four buttons in each swf and also, the 4 buttons are intergrated into the graphics on the moan swf.

I have a project which has a main swf file that is compiled with a bunch of classes. The main swf also loads in other child swf objects, created in the flash IDE, that happen to reference some of the same classes.

It seems redundant to have the child swfs include the main swfs classes, especially if I update the classes which means I have to recompile all the child swfs, not just the main swf.

Im using FlashDevelop 4.0 RC3 with Flex 4.6/AIR 3.1 to code the main swf, and the child swfs are flas made in CS5.

I was thinking of using SWC's, but I'm not sure how to incorporate that into FlashDevelops workflow. I tried the SWC export plugin but that doesnt seem to work very well, it attempts to export everything in the project and doesnt seem to offer me an option to be specific...

Surely there is a way to compile flas from the IDE and allow for classes to be used for compile type checking etc, but not actually include them in the compiled swf? I know with the flex command line compiler you can generate a link-report xml from the main swf then use that xml file to exlude classes from the compile of the child swfs, but I cant see how to do something like that when exporting swfs from the flash IDE.
