ActionScript 3.0 :: Keyword "this" - Refer To The Current Instance Variable Being Created When Its The Only One Being Created?

Dec 11, 2009

When an instance variable is constructed by a constructor method, why do you need to refer to the current instance variable being created when its the only one being created? I understand assigning an expression to it but why name it "this." when it is the only object that the constructor is building? Does it have some hing to do with being able to naming that object in the Local Variable? In other words am I creating a generic object that will be named in another class?

Refer To Balls That Are Created By DuplicateMovieClip?

Dec 12, 2008

I have balls (...sounded pervert) that are created by duplicateMovieClip, yes, they spawn, but right on top of each other, and I don't seem to be able to do anything to them, I tried ball+i.onEnterFrame = function(){} typed in several different ways ("ball"+i, ["ball"+i] etcetc...) And I just couldn't find How to refer to them. i'm trying to spawn them to random positions and make them move in random directions (got the moving part already coded but like I said I can't name them -> can't use it atm.)

Short version: How to refer to balls that are created by duplicateMovieClip?

Actionscript 3 :: Switch / Case To Evaluate The Current Frame - What Instance Should Refer To

Jan 12, 2010

I'm trying to make a menusystem that will jump to specific frames depending on what frame I'm currently on. I have made a switch/case to evaluate the current frame. I have managed to find this code to get the current frame but I need an instance of my entire flash movie it seems? I have tried this (psudo code sort of). var frame = myClip.currentFrame; I then proceed to test frame in the switch/case statement. (All this is an event for a mouse event listener BTW). Now how can I refer to myClip?

ActionScript 3.0 :: System Resource Use - Flash Created Vs Photoshop Created?

Mar 14, 2009

I have only one question but phrased it 3 ways:

1) Is it better to pre=render things say in photoshop or have flash render them?

2) if I have a field of stars that drift along; is it better to create that Star Field in photoshop as a single picture (say a .png) or to create a star in my library and add it to a movie clip and then have that drift along?

Lets say I have a blur effect on my stars and have an equivalent on the photoshop.

3) I have heard (and experienced) adding effects like blur takes a fair amount of CPU and memory so was wondering if I created the effect in photoshop and then imported the 'blurred' object into my flash if I could cut down on system resources?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Refer Certain Variable And Instance Names Within Loops?

Aug 18, 2010

Trying to set up a world of warcraft like hotkey setup for an RPG i'm making for a school project, where you drag spells from the spellbook onto the hotkeys. Understand all the concepts, however, instead of doing a ridiculous amount of if statements, I want to loop the functions. Unfortunately, I don't know how to refer to certain variable and instance names within loops. I shall show you what I have:

ActionScript Code:
for(var i; i<2; i++){
spellbook_inst["spell_"+i+"_inst"].onPress = function(){
this.startDrag();
_root.hold_spell_position_inst._x = this._x;
_root.hold_spell_position_inst._y = this._y;
}}

The "spells" (i.e., icons you drag from the spellbook) are all named spell_(number)_inst, and are movieclips within the spellbook_inst movieclip. I want the drag function to be available for all spells. At the moment, I don't get any syntax errors, but nothing happens, so I presume I have referred to it incorrectly.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Referencing A Newly Created Class Instance

Jun 16, 2011

I am completely new to actionscript although I do come from a OOP background. I have been asked to trial Flash and Actionscript 3 in particular - so I do come with a few preconceptions on how I expect actionscript to behave. I have a problem I donot understand. I have created a new class and to test it I use a simple test harness in the form of a .fla file.

The issue I have is when I create a new instance of the class and assign it to a variable, subsequent background changes to that instance of the class are not 'picked-up' when referenced through the variable. I would expect that given instance of class could be assigned to many different variables and any updates using one variable would accessible using any of the other variables.

Actionscript 3.0 :: Assign Instance Names To Xml Created Objects?

how to control dynamically created clips... What I've got is a series of objects on the stage, that have been created using an external xml file. here's the code for this...

Code: Select allfor each (var MenuItem:XML in myXML..MenuItem) {

code for setting the clips on the stage, positioning them, etc, } But what that doesn't do is give each clip an individual instance name, so I've no way of controlling them on the stage? I presume I need to create a variable and then loop through the MenuItem xml assigning a unique instance as it goes through it?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating Instance Names For Dynamically Created Movieclips?

May 28, 2011

I am trying to use a for loop, to place 5 instances of the same movieclip on the stage. In the loop I used .name to give each movieclip a unique instance name. But when I try to reference one of those instance names in an event listener I get an error. Here is an example of what I am trying to do:

Quote:

var xPos:int = 120;
var yPos:int = 60;
for (var i:Number = 1; i<=5; i++) {

[Code].....

This code generates an error saying that the cStar2 property is undefined. In the example above, does the for loop create 5 copies of the movieclip starC_moov, and give them unique instance names cStar1, cStar2, cStar3, cStar4 and cStar5?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Accessing A Property Of An Instance Inside A Dynamically Created MC

Sep 17, 2009

Im dynamically creating an instance of a movieclip, call it a game piece. This game piece has 4 frames, each with a movieclip called base(although one is red, one blue, one green, one yellow). When the game piece is created I set the frame to indicate player color. Im also changing the alpha of base to 1.0 when its being dragged, 0.5 when its dropped.

Using the following code, everything works fine if the game piece color is set to the base in frame 1 (red). If the game piece is created and the timeline moved to a frame other than 1, I throw an error when trying to access base.alpha (this would be the second, third, and fourth instances of base in the game piece timeline). Heres the strange part, this is only a problem when the game piece is first created and added to the display list. Once created, even after the error has been thrown, I can access the alpha of bases 2, 3, and 4 in the drag start/stop listeners. Heres a link to the work in progress, and the relevant sections of code (shortened for brevity, t1 is the top left piece on the pallet, others just repeat the same code):[URL]

Now: if I pass a reference (ref) of the main class to Other and I add clippo as you can see in the first case, I can reference the movieclip clippo from the main (getChildAt(0) is "clippo" from the main). But, is there any way to use the second method (no ref) and do the same from the main class? I can see clippo onstage when Other creates it but I can't understand where clippo "lives" into the DisplayList.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Check To See If A Variable Has Been Created?

May 23, 2008

Im creating an online survery and recording all the answers as a variable in _root.vars.variablename where each question creates a new variable in the vars clip.

When the user answers a question the variable is created and given a value e.g.

_root.vars.variablename1 = 1
_root.vars.variablename2 = 1
_root.vars.variablename2 = 0

But I need a piece of code to check if the variable has actually been created. The reason for this is I have a next button the user has to click once they have answered, and I dont want them to advance if they havent answered. So I need to add something like if (_root.vars.variablename1 exists ) {gotoAndPlay("answered");} else{ gotoAndPlay("noAnswer");}

Flex :: TextField Instance Inside A Button Created In A Separate Layer In Flash Is Null

Mar 25, 2010

I've created an button object in flash. The button contains 2 layers. One is the background image and on top of it is a textField. The textfield is dynamic. I use the button inside a movieclip and I export it in a SWC. The I'm trying to use it in flex.

I'm trying to do this:

var myComponent:MyComponent = new MyComponent();
myComponent.button01.theTextField.text = "Caption";

I get and instance of the button(myComponent.button01 is not null in Flex debugger), but the instance of the textField(myComponent.button01.theTextField) is null and I'm not able to change the text(but the default text appears onscreen). The code is compiled correctly in flex.

I exported the in swc the button control as well. So the button is not the default SimpleButton from Flash, but an derived class generated by flash(with the same name as the symbol defined in flash). It contains theTextField memeber, which is null.

Here is the button timeline(Layer 2 contains the textfield, and the textfield instance is named theTextField):
