ActionScript 3.0 :: Refererncing Movieclips From Inside Class Instatiated In DocumentClass

I have this very simple ImageLoader class:[code]this doesn't work anymore, because of the presence of the stage movieclips "preloader" and "imageLoaderClip".Which is the most common way to make the things work? I thought to pass a reference to the ImageLoader class as a parameter (eg I pass the preloader and the movieclip that loads the images).

I have this main (document class) in a Flash project:

Now: if I pass a reference (ref) of the main class to Other and I add clippo as you can see in the first case, I can reference the movieclip clippo from the main (getChildAt(0) is "clippo" from the main). But, is there any way to use the second method (no ref) and do the same from the main class? I can see clippo onstage when Other creates it but I can't understand where clippo "lives" into the DisplayList.

I've got a simple program that consist of a document class and a buttonTemplate constructor class. I need to call a function called updateText that should be in the document class, when someone clicks on a button. So that after each button is clicked, it updates some text in my document class. My event listeners for the buttons are in the buttonTemplate class. My question is, how do you call a function in the document class from a constructor class? Here is my simplified code below

I'm having this problem: I have an external fla (Dawn.as) and I want to instantiate the class from the external file into the main swf timeline, but when I try doing that I get an error:

After resolving one issue, another error has surfaced in my custom class. This class displays a dialogBox and the dialogBox has some interactive MovieClips like btnOK_mc Button.On creating an object of the said class, it reports errors like "Access of undefined property btnOK_mc".[code]I understand that it is an issue of the Scope of these controls; but don't know, how to define these MCs; so that they look like Public. I may be just out of track on the issue.

I've been programming with AS2 for a few years and I just made the switch to AS3. I'm hoping there is an easy solution to this problem. I have a class 'Actor' (extends MovieClip) that needs to hitTestPoint on a nested MovieClip 'root.World.walls' in a function moveRight(). The line of code looks like this: ...while (MovieClip(root).World.walls.hitTestPoint(pnt.x, pnt.y, true)) {... But I keep getting various errors when I try different solutions.

I have done this same thing in ActionScript 3, but am not familiar with ActionScript 2, which I am forced to use for this project. I am loading products into a SWF via XML and attempting to add a click event to each dynamically-created movieclip. Simply tracing the text from a node in XML will do for now. I'd like to assign a property called "desc" or "description" to each movieclip and have it trace that property's value when clicked. Here is the relevant portion of my code as it stands:

why does a MC inside another MC have different _x and _y values than the main timeline?What I am trying to do right now is animate a MC inside another MC then get the main MC holding everything to move where that new MC ended animating at (it's part of a game I'm making.)
I know it's confusing but Flash shows the cursors current X and Y in the info panel, which is the same as the main timeline. Yet inside the movieclip, an x of 76 and a y of 277 on the timeline is -195 and -30.9 (respectively) inside the MC.How do I fix it so I can get the _x and _y values to match up so I can tell the main MC to reposition itself to the new X and Y (of the inside MC)

I have a movieclip called mapWindow, inside mapWindow are dynamically created movieclips of various sizes. The movieclips inside the mapWindow don't take up the entire space of the mapWindow and thus I use a startDrag on the mapWindow upon detection of a mouse press. The problem is, I don't want the start drag to start if the mouse is detected over any of the child movieclips inside mapWindow.
I have a few ideas of how to proceed, but I'm not sure how to reference all child movieclips of a particular movieclip - or something along those lines.
It would be easy to use the hittest function if I knew how to reference all the movieclips I need to, but alas...

I have navbar_mc on the main stage. Within navbar_mc is button1_btn How can i reference this button with an eventListener from the DocumentClass?I have the following in the document class:
this.navbar.button1_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, clickHandler);
but get the following error when i compile: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.also, there are many buttons within navbar_mc, how can i make an elegant switch statement function (in the DocumetnClass) for all of them. To reiterate, with an eventListener for each button, how do i reference the correct one from a single function, in this case clickHandler?

I have been at it for days now and don't know how to get this going. I have DocumentClass and I have a simple function which returns stage width. I now would like to call this function from othr class which exist within the same package as my DocumentClass. I am able to trace the stage width when I invoke stageWidth() function from the DocumentClassAs I to understand, if the function is public, and it is being accessed by a class that exist within the same package, I should be able to access the function withou any issues.nd If I declare the function as STATIC then it is global and can be accessed by classes from other packages what am I doing wrong,

I'm new to AS3 and am starting to use OOP in flash. However I run into some problems with accessing movieclips from other classes. I am creating a DocumentClass (like Lee Brimelow showed in one of his tuts) and from that class I want to completely generate the movie using other classes and such. However I run into a problem when I need to access movieclip properties from other classes. Here's an example of what I have:

Assume I know practically nothing about AS3! I'm using Flash Pro CS5. I'm trying to reassociate a flash file I've been given with its external assets and classes. In the library I have a movieclip with linkage to a class called 'StaticMap' using the base class 'flash.display.MovieClip'. am I missing a custom class file called 'StaticMap.as' that was originally located in the same folder as the fla, or is this a generic class accessible to all movieClips from within Flash?

I have some movie clips in the library of a FLash file, which has a document class. The movie clips in the library are set up (via Linkage) to have a BaseClass. The document class creates containers for the movie clips, which are created by a timer. The base class has a click event that removes the movie clips. My problem is, how to reference the container that's created in the document class, when i want to do so from within the base class.

I`m instancing a Character and a Player in the Main Timeline, all in frame 1.
When I use: ""player.attack(character)"" it works fine by itself.
So I added the if (defender._hp <= 0) this.win() which gives me the following error:
1061: Call to a possibly undefined method win through a reference with static type Character.
"defender" is a Character instance, "this" is a Player instance and "win()" is a Player method. I try to call the Player method inside a Character method using the Player instance adding the "." and his method name
Do I really need to define the win() function in the Character class? Is there a bypass to use a subclass method in a parent class method if it`s called from an instance of the subclass?

Ok, this is one of those walls that I know once I can jump over it, I will be a much happier developer again.
I've done tons of reading, and think I have a firm understanding that the general consensus is that if you want to reference something, it needs to be added to the display list, using addChild().
I hate to be defiant, but what if I don't want to?
Or at the very least, what if I want to add a movieclip class to the stage using addChild, and then reference objects inside it?
It is much easier this way than what most people recommend - adding 15 objects via addChild, then setting the x and y for the, etc.
That said, I'm all about using classes and using as3 the way it was meant to be used. So what this is, is a best practices question I guess.
HERE ARE THE STEPS I'M TRYING:
- Create new flash document
- Draw graphic symbol bg, with text field over it, select them, convert to movieclip symbol, and export class name "box", then delete it from stage
- Add document class .as file, which simply adds that class "box" from the library, to the display list using a simple addChild()
- Set a name for that box using box.name = "test" let's say
- Do a simple trace like the following - "getChildByName('test').textFieldName" - it shows up great
- So then, I'll now try to set the text by doing this - getChildByName('test').textFieldName.text = "yo";
That last line above, is what doesn't work. I know I'm referencing wrong, but how would a pro as3 developer, reference something on the stage within a movieclip class, from the document class?

i have a BasicMap.as that takes an Array and populates itself with the MC objects passed to it by a String reference.it inherits from Sprite, and so it just places the objects on its self.then i have a class that inherits from that class, and gives a little more functionality to it, but in order for it to do that, it needs to place the objects not on itself, but instead inside a holder Sprite, so here is my problem:

I was wondering why my current code for calling a setInterval on a function doesn't work inside my class.I have this code inside one function, calling a second function.
intID = setInterval(selfReferential, dupe, 30, 0x000000);
The selfReferential keyword refers to the current class,but was defined previously (selfReferential = this; ).I get no errors, but the dupe() function is never called.and I had the selfReferential variable replaced with the this keyword at one point as well.

This is what i'm trying to do :
I have 1 class that extends movieclip, let's call it Class0. I have 1 class that extends movieclip, let's call it Class1.
I create an instance of Class0 on stage like : var myClip0:Class0 = new Class0(this, "Class1");
The class Class0 when initializing, will create a new movieclip (myClip1) and add it as child, as an instance of Class1, like myClip0.myClip1. But it's when i create that clip, i want to tell it, it's an instance of Class1, like :
private var myClip1:Class1 = new Class1(this);
Where Class1 could be any class.
How do i pass Class1 to Class0 so it can create it dynamically?? Do i have to use the apply function??

With CS3, when I entered a movieclip, I could see the other movieclips/stage in the background. But now when I enter a movieclip with CS4, I get the stage color as the background. If I try to test that "scene", the objects are in the top left corner.
It makes positioning from within a movieclip very very difficult.

I created a movie clip (let's call it "mysymbol") that contains several buttons, as well as functions for MOUSE_OVER and MOUSE_OUT events ("mover" and "mout"). Everything works when the mouse enters "mysymbol" for the first time (mover is being called), but if I move the mouse inside mysymbol to another button, the MOUSE_OUT function (mout) is being called first and then immediately mover. Obviously, I don't want there to be any function calling at all! I have found a way to circumvent this, but since I'm new at this I struggle to get it to work properly:
If mysymbol is a button instead of a movie clip, then I can move my mouse freely within mysymbol without triggering any MOUSE_OVER or MOUSE_OUT events. However, there is another problem: I somehow can't get movie clips to work inside a button(I assume this is by design), so how do I get my animations etc. to work inside this button? is there an alternative to using a button as a container?

I am trying to teach myself Flash with AS3, I am using Flash Pro CS5. I am making a website and I want to be able to press a button thats inside a movieclip to navigate to a given frame. Example, Two frames, frame 1 has a movieclip with a button inside a scrollpane. I want to click the button and go to frame 2. need a complete and detailed script for this if thats ok. I recently started learning Flash and Actionscript and now I'm trying to write an actionscript for the first time. Im doing this in Actionscript 2.0.I have a movieclip that consists of two images and one dynamic text field with a variable. The name of the images are "VS1_P1_RUN" and "VS1_P1_OFF" and the name of the dynamic text field is "pumptext". In the dynamic text field I have the variable "VS1_P1_Ind". VS1_P1_Ind is probably a boolean variable as it shows 1 or 0 in another program but in Flash it shows True or False (not sure if Flash thinks it's a text/word or a boolean).My script is supposed to display the image named VS1_P1_RUN if the variable of the dynamic text field pumptext shows the text True and it goes like this:[code]
So I'm completely stuck in what to do. The bottom code works as it should but I want the images to show depending on the value of the variable VS1_P1_Ind. I thought just changing the text field to dynamic and typing the variable name in the variable field would do it but no.If it could be a clue to the solution I'll also share that the value of the variable is not seen/shown in textfield while inside the movieclip. Creating a dynamic textfield outside of the movieclip shows the value of the variable just fine, True/False.
