Actionscript 3.0 :: Control Firing Order Of MC's With Timer Class?

Sep 11, 2010

I am working on a card game.When the game initializes, 2 cards get dealt to the dealer and 2 to the player. Each card MC is created dynamically. When you hit the deal button, the cards are dealt, but all appear at the same time. So i figured i would try using the Timer class in order to delay each card so they are dealt one-at-a-time. Seemed easy enough, but evidently i am missing something obvious and probably embarrassing. The short, simple code, which i expected to be a no-brainer, doesn't seem to want to work. My ignorance with the Timer class isn't helping where i am going wrong or if i am way out in left field? I created a Timer that repeats 4 times(repeatCount). I was thinking that i could target e.repeatCount with a case statement and fire off each card. I can't seem to get it working though.

Code: Select allimport flash.events.TimerEvent;
import flash.utils.Timer;
var dealTimer:Timer = new Timer(200, 4);

[code].....

ActionScript 3.0 :: Why Isn't This Timer Firing

zipTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER_COMPLETE, onTimerComplete);

Now, I can't see, for the life of me, why this isn't firing. It's almost exactly the code from Adobe's docs...zipArray.length is at least 32.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Timer Event Not Firing?

Jul 13, 2010

I have a little flash app that I have running constantly on my server (I made it an exe). It runs great for a few days, but then eventually it just stops.

Code:
trace("test1");
var myTimer:Timer = new Timer(5000, 1);
myTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, getData,false,0,true);

[Code].....

The code above should call the function getData once after 5 seconds have passed. This works 99.99% of the time, but for some reason (usually after a few days of it running) it doesn't call the getData function.

I have verified this through trace statements. When it eventually fails, it traces out test1, test2..... then nothing else. No test3.

I'm assuming I need to add an event listener for the timer object to check if it fails for whatever reason. How do I do this?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Loader Class Not Firing Complete Event?

Jan 24, 2007

I've got a custom Thumbnail class that reads in an image path, a label, and an index. The class simply loads the image and and onComplete it pulls the bitmap out of loader.content, assigns it to a public variable and then dispatches an event saying its completed.

I use these thumbnails in a thumbnail gallery and I don't build the gallery in until all thumbnails are loaded and ready. The problem is the COMPLETE event doesn't always fire for every thumbnail, therefore not allowing the gallery to build.

I used a ProgressEvent.PROGRESS to make sure the files were being loaded, and found that when the loads failed the loader still loaded the totalBytes.

I've also tried Event.INIT and its the same issue.

INIT and COMPLETE just don't seem to be either caught or dispatched.

Code:
public class Thumbnail extends Sprite
{
/******************************************************************************************

I need to build an interface that views those 12 individual presentations as thumbnails on a single page and allows my client to click and drag whichever ones they wish to use into a separate little container above and in-doing so create a new required running order (left to right) each time they use my interface... so that once they have decided that running order they can somehow use the result for their required presentation. They will be using this interface ongoing throughout the year for various presentations all that will require maybe just a few of those individual swf's in different orders.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Global Timer Control - Remove Instance Refs From Array?

Sep 15, 2008

I'm writing a video game and I have used timers all over the place to make everything go. Now I want to be able to pause the game, completely. Meaning, I need to stop and start all timer instances at once, or globally. So I created a Timer subclass called CustomTimer, put some statics in there, came up with the attached code. Now my problem is that I'm pretty sure I've created a memory leak, in that the instances array will just grow and wont allow or gc. So, my question is, is there an "onDestroy()" method or somesuch, that I can override, and use that moment to remove instance refs from the instances array? Or, is there a smarter way to do this? an application object with a pause method perhaps?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Rotator Timer - Adding Buttons For User To Control Item

My issue is that I'm not sure how to implement the button without messing up my timer that is already running. I was able to do the Pause button, which was simply to stop the timer. The forward and backward buttons are a bit more tricky. This is what I have so far. Note that I have much of the code duplicated because I needed to initialize the objects for the first timer index. After the first item, the code runs from the timerHandler() function.

Flash :: Specify The Order That FlashBuilder Searches For Class Definition?

Sep 9, 2011

I have two Flash Builder projects. Let's call them MainWeb and MainAIR. MainWeb defines and includes all of the classes for my application including a runtime loaded module that interfaces with our web services. MainAIR's Source Path references MainWeb/src and includes only two unique parts. The first file is of course the root MXML document. The other file overrides a compiled, runtime module defined in MainWeb called DataStreamer. DataStreamer interfaces with our web services for MainWeb and the alternate version of DataStreamer interfaces with the OS filesystem for MainAIR. This makes a very easy to maintain pair of projects and easy to build both the web version and the AIR version of my application.

It has worked well until I needed to add an instance of mx.controls.Image. Image references SWFLoader and loads resource/content swfs at runtime. Some of those resources have executable code, so I needed to do the following:

AS3 :: Flex - GetTimer() Method And The Timer Class?

Jun 18, 2009

I'm in the process of making a game (a shmup) and I've started to question the accuracy of the timers in ActionScript. Sure, they're accurate enough when you want to time things on the order of a few seconds or deciseconds, but it seems to perform pretty poorly when you get to finer ranges. This makes it pretty tough to do things like have a spaceship firing a hundred lasers per second.

In the following sample, I tested how long (on average) the intervals were between 1000 timer ticks intended for 30ms. Time and time again, the results are ~35-36ms. Decreasing the time, I found the floor on the timer delay to be ~16-17ms. This gives me a max fps of ~60, which is great visually but also means I can't possibly fire more than 60 lasers per second :-(. I ran this test a few times at 100 and 1000 loops, but for both the 30ms test and the 1ms test the results didn't change. I print to a textField at the end because using trace() and launching the swf in debug mode seems to negatively affect the test. So what I'm wondering is:

Is this test a decent measure of the Timer class's performance, or are my results questionable? Will these results change dramatically on other machines? I understand this is dependent on the getTimer() method's accuracy, but the discussions I find on this topic usually center around getTimer()'s accuracy on larger intervals.

Actionscript 3.0 :: Building A Timer Class For All MovieClips?

May 17, 2009

I've been coding actionscript poorly for about 5 years now. I'm actually pretty proficient at sloppy code. Well, now with the advent of AS3, I have to get everything right. So now it's all from scratch.

I have Lee Brimelow's example of the Timer class:

Code: Select all// We need to import the utils package
import flash.utils.*;
// Create a new Timer object with a delay of 500 ms
var myTimer:Timer = new Timer(500);

[Code]....

However, I have no idea how to connect this to a movieclip without re-building the thing over and over again with a new instance name inside the function. This is horribly redundant, something I got used to using setInterval, and I want to break that habit.
