I'm testing the equality of an input textfield and a string variable. For some reason, it's always resolves to false even when the values it traces out are the same.[code]

I'm wondering if I should always use "===" (strict equality) when doing equality checks... Is there any example of when it is preferable to use "==" (non-strict equality)? In particular, should:

if (param1 == null || param1.length == 0)

be

if (param1 === null || param1.length === 0) ?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Taking A Textfield Or JS Variable From HTML Page Amd Putting It Into A Flash String?

I have a variable called AICC_Student_ID, which is talking to an LMS to pull in a student's unique ID (usually the same as their NTID). I need to take that JS variable value, and slap it into a String for treatment.I looked at the work it would take to use SWFObject, and since this little swf is going onto literally thousands of pages, manually hacking each and every one is just not worth it.

f you know PHP...then you know that you can create a string variable...and then use the value of that variable to declare another variable. like this:

PHP Code:

and it would display "success"...or like this:

PHP Code:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating A True Map Implementation With Object Equality (rant)

Dec 8, 2009

I've been spending some of my spare time working a set of collections for ActionScript 3 but I've hit a pretty serious roadblock for the way ActionScript 3 handles equality checks inside Dictionary Objects. When you compare a key in a dictionary, ActionScript uses the === operator to perform the comparison, this has a bit of a nasty side effect whereby only references to the same instance will resolve true and not objects of equality. Here's what I mean:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Change String Variable To A MovieClip Variable?

Oct 10, 2008

I have been banging my head against a brick wall regarding the following problem which must be very simple to fix, just can't see the answer.I have a class assigned to a movieclip called canvas. The class is called drawClass. I have called the instance of canvas on the stage 'drawingCanvas'.When I trace "drawingCanvas" I get object drawClass] which is fine. Tracing drawingCanvas.name gets me the instance name 'drawingCanvas'.This is a String variable.Basically what I am trying to do is pass the MovieClip name to another class. In my example the class 'toolBar', which can then interact with the MovieClip.

The problem is passing 'drawingCanvas.name' results in a String, so I get an error saying :TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert "canvasArea" to flash.display.MovieClip.I can't for love or money find a way to convert a String variable to a MovieClip variable! I have the name of the MovieClip, I just need to tell the toolbar class. But I can't find a way of doing this as the instance on stage is an object of drawingClass, not a MovieClip (unless MovieClips with attached classes are not treated as standard MovieClips?).

ActionScript 3.0 :: String Variable In Place Of Int Variable?

Each corresponds to a different color of "Monster" class I reated. "GreenMonster", "BlueMonster", etc. are all custom classes. Each class has a string property called "MonsterColor". So "Blue1.MonsterColor = "Blue".

To save lines of code, and learn, I'm trying to use a local string variable to take the place of whichever of these 6 int variables I need. So inside a for loop, I've created a variable called "colorscore".

IDE :: Checking An Input String?

May 15, 2009

I do math applications for the web. Often I have to check if a user input is correct. For example: the right answer is 3x+5. Is the user input that.I do this by checking character by character. I don't think that it is the best way, especially since the user may have written 5+3x, which is right, too, although it is preferred to write the other way around.I sometimes have to check more complicated expressions, like -3x^2+7x-15 or -2 sin (4x^2).Right now I'm doing an equation solving exercise. There I have to check what the user wants to do to the equation, like +2x or /(-5).

Nothing happens until I click on the text field and type 'a.' I don't have to do the second click with any other character, and before I do the second click, the cursor is blinking in the box.
