ActionScript 2.0 :: Number Variable Gets Converted To String When Reading From Textfield Of Numbers
Aug 20, 2010
I have the input textfield with instance name vIn, and the variable _vIn. (The textfield is empty.)[code]i have five other variable/textfield pairs were this works ok. I don't get why this pair doesn't work also, my textfields won't accept the subtraction operator, - , even though they're all set to vIn.restrict = "0123456789.-";It doesn't even work in the output textfields were there's no restriction (Negative results are displayed positive)

how to do this and not found much, so here goes:
I want to generate a variable number of random numbers less than 16 with no duplicate numbers
Ive posted the fla, and what i'm doing is generating a random number and putting it into an array then using a for loop to cycle through the array for each new random number to check if its already there. if it is, then i want to regenerate that number.
if you test the fla you'll see that all i get in my array is some lovely zero's and i sort of know why this is, but don't know how to stop it.

We're making a simple input text comparisons vs. some constant floating point numbers (e.g. 4.35). Using Actionscript 2 to Flash 9 export. Getting totally contradictory traces on two different computers compiling identical code...Here's some simple code we're using to figure out what's going on.
Code:
trace(typeof(Number(435/100)))
trace(typeof(Number(435/100)==4.35))
trace((Number(435/100)==4.35))
[code]....
Also, what behavior do any PC users have? I'm expecting the latter since they're generally intel chipsets too?Note: once i compile the code on my PPC mac, intel macs that run the SWF (but don't recompile the FLA) do return the correct booleans that match the PPC output.

So I load a variable, length, into a LoadVars instance.
Code:
trace(this.length); //outputs 3
var tempLength:Number = this.length; //tempLength should be the number representation of the loaded value
thisObj.buttonLength = tempLength+2; //I need to add 2 onto the this.length value
trace(thisObj.buttonLength); //outputs 32, which kind of makes sense, but I need it to output 5.
thisObj.buttonLength is declared as a number, and Flash does not output a type mismatch.

I would like to make a dynamic button on a website I am working on. I would like one button to update a variable, and another set of buttons to add 1 or subtract one from the variable I have buttons on the left side of the page for some bands that load conent into an empty movie clip.
The website: [URL]
I would like to set up some forward and backward arrows above that content on the right, so users can also scroll through the content in order. So if someone loads the content for soul asylum, and click the back arrow, it goes back to the Wailers, and if they click the forward arrow, it goes to Swollen Members. So there is an order of pages: 1. Wailers, 2. Soul Asylum, 3. Swollen Members, 4. Passafire, 5. Beats Antique, 6. SFM Kind of an order of importance. The idea is if somebody starts by clicking #3 Swollen Members, my application will know that it is on #3 and the arrows will go to #2 or #4.
Is there a way for the main artist buttons on the left to reset a variable for the current slide? So if someone clicks on the Swollen Members picture button, a variable called currentselection equals 3 And then when the forward arrow is clicked, it will ad 1 to the current selection and load movie #4
So in VB the main Swollen Members button would be something like: im currentselection as int = 3 Which would reset the current page as 3
Then the forward arrow would have code like:
Dim Nextselection as Int
Nextselection = & currentselection +1 & ".swf"
And the button in flash would be something like:
on (release) {
loadMovie("Nextselection", "rightcontent_MC")}
Which would load 4.swf the slide for passafire.
So how would I do this in action script 2.0?

I am building a project where I got XML text displayed on a textfield. How can I change a specific word's color through actionscript 3 instead of doing it on XML? I though of creating a String variable for my word and then using that variable in my textfield.text, it works but is it possible to set a color for that variable?

I'm setting up a menu system powered by an XML feed that will have everything created dynamically (graphics, textFields, etc), and I've started pondering something...Since the menu will essentially be in list form, with each button stacked on top of the other, and since the titles will be passed as strings out of attribs in the XML, I was wondering if there was a way (there has to be) to essentially define a width of the text box, but leave the height open, allowing for multiline = true;, and then to dynamically draw the button graphic based off of either the height of the textField or the number of lines the textField uses.
Will this just be a matter of ordering, in that I won't actually draw the box until the textField has been set up, and the title passed to it? That way, the get height method would return the height of the box with the text in it, and I can adjust accordingly? Or should I try to base it off of the number of characters that will be passed to the box, and just set a limit via modulo or something else to "catch" when it goes to the next line (The problem I see with this is that not all characters are == when it comes to width. "i" < "e" in terms of character width, but they are both just single characters).
I would prefer to set something up that auto adjusts, as this list will be changed in the future, and I have no way of knowing if the titles will be a uniform/won't exceed a certain length. I could try to just "go big" to make room, but then you end up with boxes that look empty, and if I undershoot, I've got to go back to code.

I am trying to convert a string having numbers to an integer.
//15 9's are there
var str:String="999999999999999"
var res:Number = new Number(str);
But it is not able to convert correctly as the the var res now has the value 100000000000000000. I know that the number has 52 bits of memory, then why is it not able to do the conversion?

I have a variable called AICC_Student_ID, which is talking to an LMS to pull in a student's unique ID (usually the same as their NTID). I need to take that JS variable value, and slap it into a String for treatment.I looked at the work it would take to use SWFObject, and since this little swf is going onto literally thousands of pages, manually hacking each and every one is just not worth it.

But I then need the movieclip "numbers" to gotoAndStop to the frame number imported via the variable daysleft. I've tried a couple different hash classes for as3. Right now I'm using the com.adobe.crypto package from [URL] What I need is a way to return the raw data as opposed the the hex converted string, similar the the way python's hashlib functions have a digest() and hexdigest() method. In python the code would be
...
single = sha1('some text').digest()
double = sha1(single).hexdigest()
...
In as3 using the following code returns a different hash because the return from the first hash is converted to hex before being hashed again.
...
SHA1.hash(SHA1.hash('some text'));

I have an input text box and I want the user to be able to enter a number in the text box and hit a button and it will jump to that frame of a movie clip. For some reason I can't get the input text to read the input as a number. I have tried using parseInt or Number, but it gives me this output instead. "<TEXTFORMAT LEADING="2"><P ALIGN="CENTER"><FONT FACE="Myriad Pro Light SemiCond" SIZE="13" COLOR="#000000" LETTERSPACING="0" KERNING="0">2</FONT></P></TEXTFORMAT>" when I just want it to say "2".
Here is the code I have linked to the button:
Code:
btn_newPage.onRelease = function (){
pageNum=parseInt(pageString);
[code]...
On the trace of pageString I get the text i put in above and then pageNum comes back as NaN.btn_newPage is the button they would click after they have input a page number in the input text box. pageString is the name of my input text box variable and I was trying to use pageNum to change it to a number. And doc_content is the movie clip I am trying to control.

I am having trouble using numeric data from my xml document. I can read the fields in to strings to trace or send to a textField, but my goal is to use data from my xml to drive graphs. I'd like to use the data to assign position to graphic elements, so somehow read in as, or assigned to a variable as an Int or a Number?
So far I have not been successful referencing the P or I elements as numbers from xml
that looks like this:
<YEAR1800>
<CITY1>
<Name>New York</Name>
<Income>1,100</Income>
<I>11</I>
<Life>35</Life>
[Code] .....
This doesn't work but my idea is either to assign the xml address to a local variable and then drive the graphic with it or just have the graphics position reference the xml address.

I have an Input Text box that has a variable assigned to it.The user is to input a number, and then it is submitted with a button that does a simple conditional if statement check. I noticed that the if statement is constantly failing because the variable is tracing back as HTML.The trace of the variable looks like this:
<TEXTFORMAT LEADING="2"><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Times New Roman" SIZE="12" COLOR="#0066CC" LETTERSPACING="0" KERNING="0">4</FONT></P></TEXTFORMAT>
The variable should simply be the number 4 without all the HTML jibberish.The "Render text as HTML" is not on for the Input Text box.I am completely baffled and at a complete loss... any ideas of what is happening here?!Below is the exact code I am using...

numA = random(10)
numB = random(10)[code]....

I have an animation that reads some info from a txt file (such a bkg color, bkg image and text). So I would like to make my main animation in the root to repeate a segment of the animation (beteween 50 and 80 frame) or to loop an MC so many times like the number of lines in this txt file.
For exapmle if I have in my txt 6 lines to go from 50 to 80 frames, that again to 50 and like this 6 times (e.g. to repeat this segment 6 times)

I currently have an array that looks like this:
ActionScript Code:
var array:Array=new Array["p", "e", "t"];
What I want to do is use an if statement to make it something like this:
ActionScript Code:
if (array.something=="pet") {
Notice the 'something' after array. I'm not sure if there is a way to take the data from an array and compare it to a string.
