I need to read an external information from a TXT file or from an XML file, but as a number. I know Number() should convert string to number, but seems like the XML gives me an array, while I used XPath.selectNodes(durationXML, "/xml/@")... I used this code:

I have an animation that reads some info from a txt file (such a bkg color, bkg image and text). So I would like to make my main animation in the root to repeate a segment of the animation (beteween 50 and 80 frame) or to loop an MC so many times like the number of lines in this txt file.
For exapmle if I have in my txt 6 lines to go from 50 to 80 frames, that again to 50 and like this 6 times (e.g. to repeat this segment 6 times)
1) Using the number keypad, the user pushes a series of numbers to an array.
2) Lookup() is called to identify which "code" has been entered.

I'm writing an app that I want to ideally pull a random entry from a txt file. Each row of the txt document has 12 separate entries. When I use LoadVariables to read the file, I get the entire file. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to parse the individual lines.
I have so many questions I don't know where to begin...
First, do I need to use varName= in front of each item in the text file? Second, does flash anything that will allow you to read a file by line, then parse based on tab delimiters? Third, should I be using something besides loadVariables to retrieve data, or should I be using something besides a txt document?
this will get me started, but there is still the matter of randomly selecting a line in the txt document.

It works fine when I am reading into the dynamic text fields but when I want to use a variable for something in the actual flash nothing is working.I am reading a Database and everything is working just great, except that there are no more records to read! I have a variable named last which is displayed during the last record set so that i could use it to end the display of the records.I tried setting it up in an if statement...

I am trying to change information on my site using cue points in my video. My video is in a flash quiz and I am trying to change my objects such as an ad or photo with these cue points. In otherwords, when a video begins, or when a cue point is reached the photo outside the video would change. I am currently using cue points to go to the next frame after the video completes, but I don't know how to make it change things outside the video.

I have a question about the loader class.I was reading some of the documentation on the follow web page:http:[url]....And I didn't get very far before I had my first question about how the loader class pulls in external information:

For example, say, the data were types of fruit along with their corresponding prices, but the user was only interested in the price of apples. To see only those records or rows with apples and the corresponding apple prices, the user would press the "Apples" button.
Creating the datagrid seems pretty straight forward, it's just the second part that's stumped me. Whatever the answer is would seem to go at the end where the "trace" is now. I am changing the flashvars variables v1=value&v2=value ect then after the flash movie runs I am changing the variables externally by javascript, so far so good.when flash first loads it reads the vars correctly.when I try to read them ( after the change ) it keeps reading the old values.[code]everything works except I cannot seem to read the changed FlashVars.

The issue is that I need to make several external calls to get various pieces of outside information in response to a user request, and the way items will be laid out on the page is dependent on what each of these external calls returns. So, I don't care that all of these calls return asynchronously. However, is there any way to force some amount of synchronization on ActionScript, so that at least calling the method for doing the final layout and placement of items on the page is dependent on all of my calls finishing?

Everything works perfectly for nearly everyone - you click a menu button, and the content text comes up fine. However, a couple of people have found that the text shows up as "undefined". I have checked the player versions of the people where it doesn't work, and it is the same as for those where it does work, so that ain't the problem.
I don't understand why it works perfectly for nearly everyone, but a small number of people have this "undefined" text problem. It seems to be a problem with loading the external text file, but I don't know why. I have a main flash movie, and load the text in the first frame, using the following:

I then have a couple of dynamic text boxes in the main movie - one called ErrorText (for displaying an error message to the user) and one called ContentText (for displaying the content). I use an external menu swf which jumps to a specific frame in the main movie, depending on which button is clicked. Actionscript on the main movie frame for the first button does the following, with the other frames similarly configured:

Does anyone have any advice on how I can solve this particular weird problem??

I have a SWF which loads another SWF with addChild(), but the graphic designer, says that he wont put code into the animation. So is its possible to check how many frames there is in the external SWF and if it has reached the last frame, checked from the master SWF? and then the master can do a function...?
View 2 RepliesIm running AS2 on Flash CS4 for this: I've found a million posts on similar topics, but none seem to do what I want, even though I feel like its very simple. I've tried a ton of different codes and can't get anything to work. All I want is for Flash to pull a number variable from an external file, lets just say a txt for now. I then want to be able to use this variable for calculations within flash. The only thing I can get to semi-work is having a txt file that says MyNum=5 and then putting the following in flash: loadVariables("Test.txt" , _root);
If I trace the variable "MyNum" it will output the right value, but its as a string no matter what I do. My most recent attempt to get it to be a number is to put the following on a later frame:
var NewVar:Number = MyNum;
var NewVar2:Number = NewVar + 1
trace(NewVar2);
Despite hardcoding multiple variables to be numbers, the output I get is 51, which means its still displaying as a string. My other issue is that you have to wait several frames before the variable is recognized. Do you have to wait numerous frames to use these loaded variables? If so, is there a way I can code it so that flash will just wait until it has the variable before moving on? I can't seem to get any loading function to work for it, but I don't just want to pull my next action down the timeline some arbitrary number of frames and hope its enough for flash to pull that number from the file.
I'm just learning AS3 with flash cs5 and I utilized the template "preloader for external file" with the big red bar. The bar progresses fine! But then I wanted to add a percentage number so I tried a couple of things with the code. The result: the bar doesn't progress and the percentage number works allright.
