Actionscript 3 :: Class - Reading All Classes Under A Package Or Reading Classes With Same Metadata
Jun 19, 2011
I am doing an Actionscript 3.0 project which involves introspection. I am wondering if there is a way to get all the classes within a given package structure.

I have a move that reads class files located in folder called 'src' and has been working once I changed the path to absolute. for some reason now my movie has decided not to work.
this is how I create the path:Go to porperties and click 'Edit' then clicking the AS3 'settings'. I then go to the 'Source path' tab and click 'browse folder' icon to the folder of the classes.having done all this my movie still does not work.

I saw that you can embed meta-data into images very much like you can in mp3s, here.
Can someone point me to a tutorial of how to embed and read this sort of information w/ photoshop and flex together? I really wouldn't know where to start... Tried googling but I'm not sure I have the right keywords down.

I am building a flash panel that reads metadata from a .fla when it is active in the Flash IDE. This panel is also storing metadata in the .fla and that is no problem. What is problematic is that I do not know how to stop the event listener from listening for onDocumentChange.
I want it to listen for it as long as it is open, but when it's closed it should clean up after itself because trying to read metadata every time a new document is selected is not a very nice thing to do.
I have tried to listen for all kind of events in the panel to detect when the user closes it, but with no success.

I have a video that displays closed captioning inside Quicktime player (it was embeded to the file's metadata).I've tried pulling that information out as if it were conventional flash-friendly metadata, but that doesn't seem to do the trick.

I am changing the flashvars variables v1=value&v2=value ect then after the flash movie runs I am changing the variables externally by javascript, so far so good.when flash first loads it reads the vars correctly.when I try to read them ( after the change ) it keeps reading the old values.[code]everything works except I cannot seem to read the changed FlashVars.

This is with Flexbuilder 3.2, Eclipse 3.3.2.I am moving my development environment to a new machine. Actionscript classes that compiled in the old environment now get a compile error:
A file found in a source-path must have an externally visible definition. If a definition in the file is meant to be externally visible, please put the definition in a package.I do declare the package in these classes - I think failure to declare the package is the usual reason for this error.To add to the mystery, many classes in this project compile without errors.

I'm trying to set up an AS3 project using a single package, that will have multiple classes coded in seperate files.I am looking for examples and tutorials for this kind of project.As I understand it, these files must have the same package, and their class must be public. This will allow the multiple files and various classes to be used in the single package.[code]Either of both of these files could then be imported into the main movie and their classes / functions used in the package.

I have created the following code that pulls data from an external xml file into a datagrid. I have been trying to figure out how to get it to function using classes and/or packages. I'd like to separate the functionality into separate classes for each of the following:1) A class for loading the XML file(s) (there will likely be more datagrids and more xml files)2) A class for "drawing" the datagrid based on the xml.... others you can think of?
Code:
/////////////////////////////// BEGIN xml_to_datagrid.fla ///////////////////////////////////////

I'm posting this since i just lost a half an hour with this. FlashDevelop for some reason doesn't always know code completion for classes in the fl package, to fix this add this to you Global Class path (make sure to select AS3): C:Program FilesFlashDevelopLibraryAS3frameworksFlashIDE

When I create anything in a library, it's basically a class right? Meaning I can do essentially the same thing with use of a package in an AS file? In AS 2.0 this would probably mean I can add specific functions on this class as I can do when I use flash's object interface and add script to the specific class object itself. However, in AS 3.0 you cannot attribute code directly to an object right?
This leads me to my second question. I basically want to create a flash mp3 player (I've coded this already), but make it so that it is an entire package of contents, so I can add it to my website when a mouse event is detected and then take it off the website once it's no longer needed (to conserve memory and assure an overall nice experience). The problem is that I have many objects and subsequent functions (play button, pause button, etc), and want all of this to be contained in one file. Is this even possible?

I'm building a class with AS3 which is supposed to be able to read via php an xml file of the which I specify the url and assign the return to a variable, the as3 cose is the following:
package
{
public class phpInterfaceClass
{
[Code]....
I know that I should make the readXML function return only after the loading event has completed, but I don't know how!

I have x amount of classes in a package eg. "com.trevorboyle.lotsofclasses" and I keep adding more (These classes will probably all be static and will probably all extend the same class).I wish to create a drop-down list of all these classes, preferably without having to manually create an array myself.
Once a class is selected from the list, I'll be able to use getDefinitionByName to return it, because I will know it's name at this point.The question is, as I believe there is no support in AS3 to list all the classes in a specific package, is there a design pattern that handles this?

I have already set a variable in my document class "Main.as". I am now trying to access that variable and read its value from a different Class and Function, take that value and email it. For example in my "Main.as" file I have this function:
public var _myVar:String;
function create() {
_myVar = "hello";
}
Now from my other class "EmailtoFriend.as" I have a new function to try and get the value of that pre set variable:
function getVar() {
trace(_myVar);
}
Why will it not output "hello"? Instead I get an error saying: Access of undefined property _myVar.

Is there any way to auto-import as3 classes (internal/intrinsic Flash Player classes at least) using Emacs ?
Looked for as3-mode and actionscript-mode but nothing working was found. as3-mode can import class if it is opened in buffer (but not *.mxml files)

The examples I'll use don't do anything - they're classes without ANY members - no variables, methods, anything.
Let's say I extends Sprite and call it MySprite.
I save it in test.core
[code]...
Now I create another custom class called MyWindow that extends MySprite.
I save it in test.windows
[code]...
Then I create another class that extends MyWindows (the example I'll use is a document class - but that doesn't matter - I've tested using an instance too).
[code]...
Notice that I'm not even trying to instantiate the helper classes - just having them there throws the error.
If there is only a single helper class, everything runs fine.
Also note that - as far as I can tell - this only happens when extending one class from another package, then extending that class with more than one helper object.I'm pretty sure there's no namespace bumps or typographical errors, as this is a very pared-down version of the original application.
EDIT: seems the problem exists even without the crossing packages - even extending MySprite in the document class with multiple internal classes generates this error.

I am creating a library in AS3. Inside the library I make use of a bunch of classes/packages that need not be exposed to the end user of my lib. I want to only expose one of these classes.
I guess my questions are:
1) How are libraries commonly distributed in AS3?
2) Is there a .jar equivalent in AS3 that developers can include, but will only have access/knowledge of the classes I've declared as public?

I'm trying to import a class from a class that is located in another folder. How do you move up a directory? Using./ or ../ doesn't seem to work. Essentially I want to access a TweenLite Class but not from the document class. My class is at com/myName and the class I want to access is at com/TweenLite. import ../TweenLite doesn't work... I realize I could just copy and paste the entire Tweenlite folder again, but there's got to be a less duplicative way of doing this..

inheritance and building classes from other classes.
I have 3 classes:
gfxRoomText - changeable colour
gfxRomInter - changeable colour - interactive
gfxRoomImg - interactive - only image / no colour
The first two incorporate the same text field and functions to change colour. The second and third incorporate another class to interactive with. What is the best way of creating these classes using inheritance and how?

I am new to classes and I am just starting to follow tutorials on how to assign classes and sub classes and I am wondering when you assign a base class or class to an object(Symbol e.g movieclip) through the properties, are all instances on the stage no matter how many and what they are named influenced and is the Stage/main timeline always the parent? and just one more question, is the parents objects display list all the movieclips that are used on the stage or all the instances on the stage?
