Actionscript 3.0 :: Update Text Area Inside A Button?

I know you can't target movieclips and text inside buttons in AS2, but I'm hoping there's a workaround in AS3. I've been handed a complex world map FLA with about 400 individually stylized buttons (various countries and regions) each with special text boxes in their rollover states. My job is to parse XML and push bits into the respective text area boxes.To simplify as much as possible, I've encapsulated all the buttons in an movieclipcountries_mc) and swapped the individual static text boxes for each country with an 'export for actionscript' classed movieclip (Overlay) containing a text area component (bodyCopy_ta).Kind of like this:-- stage----countries_mc------button (given instance name on stage, listened for MOUSE_OVER event)--------Overlay (shared in library, listened for ENTER_FRAME event)----------bodyCopy_taMy thinking is if I can listen for a button rollover, it seem like I should be able to change the text at Overlay.bodyCopy_ta through an event listener, regardless of where it's been placed on stage.
How can I update the dynamic text content which is inside a button ?
In other words, how can you address a dynamic text inside a button ?
I want to change the text label of a button, on the fly.
Isn't there any other way to achieve this than "making" a button with movie clip instead od a "real" button ? Does that mean Buttons were not expected to have dynamic text in them ?
I have this code for my button. How do I make it so when its rolled Over, it'll display a text area with text inside it? and when I roll Out, the text area will go away?
I have text showing up in a text area, I know I can make the background transparent, but how do I make the actual text showing up an _alpha of oh say 30 or 40...I've tried..(inside the onClipLoad event of the text area)
I've made a mask with a FLVPlayback inside and with a sliding bar that appears when I make rollover in the FLVPlayback. All working well. I want to put some simple controls in the sliding bar like pause or play, but I can't access the buttons because they are inside a first button ( the FLVPlayback ) that triggers the sliding bar. How can I make to have a button inside another button area?
When i hover over my button it successfully updates my dynamic text and upon moving off the button the text clears. the function works how i want it to but is there a more efficient way of doing this? i have many buttons that will update the text so it seems very long whinded to do it the following way.[code]...
I've got a movieclip, which has got a dynamic text element.The movieclip uses a package for its codeThe package if obviously derived from the MovieClip classI've got a timer, that updates the dynamic text field every second.When debugging the code, I see that the timer works well. Its updates the value of the dynamic text field.
I would like to first add the xml to my flash. Fine I can do this.But I have a number of buttons, where when I click say CW1, i get the information from the XML file with a node of CW1. I have all the xml set up fine.As I have about eight different postcode types.
ST, CW, CH, TF, WV, WS, DE, SK, SY, and each of these may have numbers that follow, i.e ST1, ST2, ST3 and so forth.

what i tried to do is the following: i created a dynamic text, gave it a name and converted it to symbol (Button; together with a shape). then i created an instance of it and gave this one a name as well.i tried to access the dynamic text using the following as 3 code:
[symbol instance name].[dyn. text name].text = "asdf";
however, that doesnt work, and the following error shows up: "TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference."its interestion that all that works for the symbol being a movie clip instead of a button.is there a possibility to access the dynamic text inside the button as well? is there a reason for the difference between the button and the movie clip?

I have 2 MC's - one of my main character, and one of a specific area, I wish to confine my MC in. My main character has the ability to move (lol) and I do not wish for him to move outside of the boundaries of the second movie clip. Now this would be very easy if the second movie clip would be rectangulary (sp?) shaped - but it's not unfortunately. I was wondering if there is some kind of function similar to hitTest that compares the two MC's pixel by pixel, rather than setting the second MC's boundaries as a rectangle around it.
For example, what if my second MC is oval shaped, with no filling - like the '0' symbol for example...If it that is impossible (i doubt it is but w/e), then this is a approximately what my second MC looks like:[URL]
I need to put together an editable text area that has a custom caret (cursor) which is different from the default blinking vertical line. Is the caret a "skinnable" property of text input? note that I am not asking about the mouse pointer cursor which can be set using the CursorManager.
I am adding data inside a VGroup dynamically using Action Script. Each data is an instance of a custom component. So when the number of item is more, It take time to load, which look bad.

I have created a button symbol in the library that includes adynamic text instance called labelTxt. I've then dragged this ontothe stage to form several buttons called "btn1", "btn2" etc.I want to be able to change the contents of the text on thebuttons dynamically, but I am getting quite a few errors whiletrying to set the text.I have tried using (for example)btn1.labelTxt.text=myString but am getting errors saying that the property isn't defined.uote:1119: Access of possibly undefined property labelTxt througha reference with static type flash.display:SimpleButton.would skin a Button and use that but there are 3 quitedifferent styles (skins) of buttons on this particular chart, andI'm not sure how to do that with Buttons. I've got a dynamic text field in my button object. I have named the text field "myText". How can I modify the text within it? myButton.myText.text = "test"; won't work, because it can't access myText.
Is it possible to change the value of a dynamic text box inside a button's up/over states? For example, I have a button in my library which has a dynamic text field in both the up and over states. My AS loads XML data and adds the correct number of buttons while filling in the text boxes from the XML data. It seems like this should be possible, but so far I haven't made any progress.
I have a problem with a button.It has 4 keyframe and a text field with the same instance name "myText".I use this button in a MC, and its instance name is "myBtn".I'm trying to change myText with actionscript in the MC without any results.Debugging it I find a text field insiede this button named "instance6", so i think there is some problem with instance name.
I trying with: trace(myBtn.myText); and it says "undefined"!
How can i correctly give instance name to this text field?Is there any way to find out the name of the instance of an object (the text field) knowing the instance name of its parent (the button)?
I'm starting with AS3, i have a problem. I have a button, and inside the button i have a dynamic text field. The button is inside of a movieclip, the instance name of it is News, the instance name of the button is collegamento and the instance name of the dynamic text is Testo. So knowing this I'm triyng to change the content of the text using:
News.collegamento.Testo.htmlText="text here";
But Flash is giving me this error:
ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property Testo not found on flash.display.SimpleButton and there is no default value. at
I create a button(MC) and want to duplicate it and easily change the text inside this button... basically I have an mc that acts as a button so inside the mc I have text that I added that animates on mouse rollover. Now I duplicate this mc in the library go into the mc and want to change the text, and when I do, the text in the original button also changes. This happens because the text is a Tween so it's using the same tween from the library for the new button. Is there a quick way to avoid this? I don't see anyway other than typing in the text again in the new button and animating it again.
how can i test the position of the mouse inside the area of a specific movieclip WITHOUT using rollover and rollout events?

i need to do some action according to the position of mouse (inside/outside of the movieclip area) but i can not use rollover event because i have a button placed over the movieclip.
I am trying to create my first semi-serious flash game. The problem I am having is I want to be able to click a button in the players inventory to equip a different armor to the player, and have that armor work in the game on the same movieclip(Player) without having to re-make all the attacks and moves etc. for each change on another movieclip. My ideas are extremely novice like putting each armor and update on a different frame inside the Player movieclip and then doing a gotoAndStop to the frame. Though that may work I don't know how to goto a frame inside a movieclip. I would like to control this using as much code as possible.I would paste my code but I don't have any code for this part of the game so far. I have tried some simple coding but so far I cannot get the pieces together.
