I'm creating a banner for my website from Flash, and I'm using Action Script to read information from a file to put that info on the banner
Now this seems to work fine for local files. But the file will not be on the same server as the script and banner.. (personal Reasons).
How can I read this remote text file? this text files location would be something like: [URL] this file is freely readable for anyone..

I can create (AC3 and FMS4) remote sharedObject (but it's not listed on FMS admin panel, either on local server running on winXP Pro). When I trace results I see firstame value "myfirstname":

but when I want to get these values from another swf and browser with the same connection details, I don't receive anything. No ideas about returned errors, but i think it should be o.k., as I use like this to receive _so values:

I turn to you for help, dear sweet Kirupa Forumites. First, let me explain the problem: I have a flash file reading an external text file for the content. Everything works perfectly for nearly everyone - you click a menu button, and the content text comes up fine. However, a couple of people have found that the text shows up as "undefined". I have checked the player versions of the people where it doesn't work, and it is the same as for those where it does work, so that ain't the problem.
I don't understand why it works perfectly for nearly everyone, but a small number of people have this "undefined" text problem. It seems to be a problem with loading the external text file, but I don't know why. I have a main flash movie, and load the text in the first frame, using the following:

I then have a couple of dynamic text boxes in the main movie - one called ErrorText (for displaying an error message to the user) and one called ContentText (for displaying the content). I use an external menu swf which jumps to a specific frame in the main movie, depending on which button is clicked. Actionscript on the main movie frame for the first button does the following, with the other frames similarly configured:

My external text file is properly configured (content1=blah blah&content2=other blah blah) etc.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can solve this particular weird problem??

We have a Flash application provided by a vendor. It reads its parameters from an xml file on our web server's file system. However, it can also be spoofed to read its parameters from an xml file sitting on another domain's web server. At first we thought crossdomain.xml might be able to fix this, but we've researched it and understand the purpose of crossdomain.xml. It won't solve this issue.Are there any ways of enforcing that a Flash application reads its input file only from the same server where the Flash application was served? Or is the recommendation just to initialize variables within the Flash app, not relying on an external file.

So I created a dynamic scrolling text box, loaded in an external txt document containing all the right HTML tags for flash. But for some reason the flash cuts off the text. It won't show all the text I have. I noticed that it seems to be cutting it off in SOME (not all) areas where I have a hyperlink.

UPD: I succeed with downloading (into File.documentsDirectory). I can't force iPad to open downloaded files.

I am trying to read data from [URL] location in my flash file which is residing on a server. But I am not able to get any data. No issues in coding - checked with a local copy.

I'm trying to make a monopoly remake for something to do while Christmas comes, and I wanted to store all the card information somewhere. how does AS3 read from text files?
I'm an application developer, and my standard usage of Flash is as follows: I'm creating an executable application, which contains a ShockwaveFlash object instance, which in turn is displaying a Flash Movie Clip - also created by myself. The executable application and the contained Flash clip are communicating via the ActionScript ExternalInterface (using XML strings) and the FSCommand.
I'd like to be able to debug the ActionScript code of the Flash file while I'm running/debugging my executable application. For that, I need to be able to start a remote debugging session from the Flash object running inside my executable. Problem is, I did not find any way of doing this.
When I publish the Flash SWF file with "permit debugging" checked, I'm able to start a remote debugging session when I'm displaying the file in a player or a browser (the "debugging" option is shown at the right-click menu of the Flash object), but I'm not able to do the same with the object inside my executable (the "debugging" option doesn't exist on the menu).
Environment Details: The executable application is using the ShockwaveFlash COM file to create the ShockwaveFlash object. The executable application is created using VB.NET, Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5. The Flash SWF file is created using Adobe Flash Professional CS4. I'm developing under Windows XP (SP3).

Im doing a banner for a client with adds that is supose to load constantly updated XML file from my clients server and load some images into flash form it. Everything works fine when i test the movie (CTRL+ENTER), but when i publish it and test it from explorer, XML file is just not loading into flash.

View 1 RepliesI would like to have two applications communicate with each other. One app is a Flash running the browser and the other one is another app of ours that is distributed as *.exe file. We need the C/C++ application to read some info out of the SOL file, that is written by the Flash app.
Any other mean that can be used to read the SOL file from a C/C++ application? How often is the format of the SOL file being changed ?
What I have so far...sure there is a better way to do this and as I learn AS3 I will figure it out. The following is what I put together where I now have three instances of the segmented thumbnail button that shows an image when cliked on. What I figure out why it only reads the one xml file.

I'm trying to read a url from an xml file and attach an onRelease event to a movieclip that opens the url when clicked.

If I use the "thelink" variable as input to the getURL function, I get a "Page not found" error.If I use the "thelink2", it works as expected.When I look in the debugger, "thelink" and "thelink2" are identical!Here is the code for the findNode function. I've had no problems before with this code, so I don't think the problem is there.

I was wondering if there was a way to have a flash file read its own flash name and use it as a variable within that swf. ie, 05.swf. I would want 05 to be a variable with the page.

So basically the comma represents a new record in the database. So basically in my text field I'd like the following result to happen:

So take the first record and display it like I've shown and then have a couple break lines (not sure how to accomplish this either) and display the next record that was separated by the comma.I have the following AS code which works for one variable but I have more then one like above:

i'm trying to read a txt file (well actually, the file has a different extension but it's a simple txt file). i have a path in that file that points to a jpg that i want to load. if that path has a plus sign (+) in it, the actionscript reads it as a space!
