Jan 5, 2011I was given a design in Adobe Fireworks that includes century gothic text with faux bold applied. Is there anyway to emulate this style in Flash?

Mar 19, 2009In CS3, I can create a clip with 2 dynamic text fields - fld1is say, Myriad Pro and fld2 is Myriad Pro with faux bold turned onfrom the properties panel. I can then do...fld1.htmlText = <b>Bold text</b>and fld1 text appears in bold text because the faux bold fontwas embedded in fld2.CS4 doesn't have a faux bold, and when I go to the text menuand choose bold, it doesn't faux bold fld2, it actually changes thetext to Myriad Pro Bold. The bold tag no longer works, neither doesthe strong tag. I can, however, use font face tag and set it toMyriad Pro Bold, and now fld1 will show up bold.
Now let's say I want to put all my text content in anexternal XML file so the client can update it and I don't want tohave to explain the inner workings of Flash and tell them that theycan't use the bold tag, they have to use the font face tag and setit to some random name that I come up with for the bold fontlibrary symbol (in case we don't want to use Myriad in the future).Do I really have to set up a function to examine strings forthe bold tag and replace it with the font face tag? Is there reallyno way to get the bold tag to work?
Actionscript 3 :: Programmatically Set "Faux" Bold And Italic Font Styles In Flex?
Feb 4, 2012I have a client that I build a business card "builder" application for in Flex. All the text elements that users add to the stage are Flex spark TextArea. I have a list of fonts that we allow the user to set on the text areas and some of the fonts included do have Bold and Italic versions of the font. The others that do not I simply disable these options in the control panel so the user doesn't have the option to click bold or italic buttons.
Photoshop does something similar if you load a font that doesn't have Bold or Italic options they disable the dropdown that would allow you to select these options in the text pallet http://grab.by/bOTC
When bold and italic aren't an included font face then Photoshop as a couple of buttons for applying Faux Bold and Italic to the font. Basically they programmatically thicken up the font face or slat it to make it look italic.
I've tried just setting fontWeight and fontStyle on the fonts that don't have bold or italic included in the embedded fonts and the result usually is a "web safe" font shows instead of the selected font or nothing at all happens.
I am wondering if there is a programmatic way that anyone has found that will do this in Flash / Flex. Basically thicken the font face or tilt it slightly to look italic. My guess is this would be pretty difficult and not worth the time and effort to the client but would be a neat thing to figure out and have a solution for.

May 4, 2011I have a dynamic text box for 3 lines of text. I styled part of the text to be bold and part of it to be regular. When i click on the button to display the text it looks right the first time but if i click on it a second time then all of the text shows up bold instead of just the few lines i assigned the bold tag to.

For some reason my version of the code will not update this variable could someone tell me where I've gone wrong? Sep 14, 2010-Adobe CS3 Web Premium. -Compiling using AS3. I'm pulling in some text values from an external XML file for a "next" button and I set the font to bold when I made it Verdana. I'm not sure why but it still is normal verdana when I compile it.
I've found several posts similar to mine saying I need to embed the bold version of the font, but I don't have the option of purchasing or creating a bold Verdana. Since it is just Verdana, is there not a method I can use to simply bold the text?

Bottom line is I don't always need to peer into SWC's, and I don't like having a 'default package' automatically created for me. Not sure why the interface wasn't made simpler, allowing access to more power and complexity only if necessary. I want to focus on the code, not on how to navigate and use the bells and whistles in the coding environment.

Jul 18, 2009I've imported four fonts into the Library and used Linkage to enable Export for Actionscript. The fonts are the four versions of Trebuchet MS:
Trebuchet MS
Trebuchet MS Bold
Trebuchet MS Bold Italic
Trebuchet MS Italic
They are named like this in the Library and for example the 'Bold Italic' version has both 'bold' and 'italic' selected in its properties.
Then I drew a dynamic textfield and selected for it's font 'Trebuchet MS Bold Italic*' so that the embed font was used. I also embeded the glyphs for 'Basic Latin' and 'Latin 1'.
Then I used this code to fill it with text:

The text is placed, however, it is always in the Trebuchet MS regular font. Also when I click the bold and italic icons in the Property Bar, the font won't go bold/italic. The same for just bold and just italic. It only turns bold/italic when I delete all font symbols accept the Bold Italic one.

Nov 18, 2010I try to do a site for a community against child abuse, I've got external text files and have choosen render as html. I choose Verdana regular font and embed some swedish characters. When I then write something in the text file it works OK, and so with the <i>, <u> and <li> tags but when I write <b> tags nothing happends at all. Then I tryed to embed the bold font and everything went bold, why is it so? How do I make the bold tag work?

Sep 29, 2011I'm trying to get Flash to display a bulleted list using bold embedded fonts.
What I'm finding is that I can get bold fonts with bullets, but not embedded. Or embedded fonts with bullets that aren't bold, or bold embedded fonts without bullets.
This is incredibly frustrating (as well as annoying).
I'm embedding the fonts in the library and exporting them via actionscript. Here's my code...

The above code produces the regular font embedded bulleted list.
If I change the bulletTF.font line to bulletTF.font = myFontBold.fontName The font goes bold and the bullets go away.
Html :: Bold And Regular Font In Dynamic Text Under A Mask In Flash ?
Feb 20, 2010I have this text "my text is <b>bold</b> and regular".
I want "<b>bold</b>" to be... well, let's say... bold !
I have a mask layer under which there is a text field.
The text field shows htmlText, and i must embed chars. If not embedded, it doesn't display because of the mask. So the solution of importing 2 user fonts ( one bold and one regular) does not work.

Jul 5, 2010I have a linked movieclip that contains two textfields.One of the textfields needs to have regular and bold text, so I thought I would use htmlText however it's only showing the regular font that I embedded?I made the textfield in Flash and called it "details".I also tried to make another textField in the symbol called, "invisi" and I set it not visible:invisi.visible = false;I embedded the BOLD version of the font in the invisi textfield, hoping this would make the "details" text field show the bold font...but no luck.
