Flash :: Constraining/clipping Symbol Boundaries In CS5?
Sep 27, 2010
I want to create a MovieClip symbol of a certain width and height, but with content that extends outside its boundaries, with the option to have the external content be clipped/hidden or visible.
In Flex, the solution would be to create a group with .clipAndEnableScrolling = true.
Is there a way to do this in Flash CS5, or will the symbol always resolve to the size of its contents?

Sorry for lack of terminology but I want to create movie clips with moving graphics or objects and so want to see the boundaries of the stage. At present the whole area is filled with my stage colour. A setting somehwere?

I have a simple flash video player that streams the video from a streaming media server. The stream plays fine and I have no problems with playing the video and doing simple functions. However, my problem is that on a mouse over of the video, I have the controls come up and when I do a seek or scrub on the video, I get little weird boxes that show over the video - like little pockets - of the video playing super fast (you can basically see it seeking) until it gets to the point it needs to be at and then these little boxes disappear.

I'm making a fluid full browser flash site, and things are coming together nicely, but at some point, if the stage size gets too small (such as if someone is using a 800x600 resolution), things just don't look right. Things get all smooshed together and cause for a cluttered mess. To solve this, I put constraints on my stageResize function so the stage would only shrink down to a desired size. This worked great for the flash file, but I can't get the browser to add scroll bars are this point. I figured I would need a JavaScript file that would size the browser (or the div that contains the swf) and then constrain it as needed, but after digging around a few sites that perform the way I would like mine to, I am not seeing any such JavaScript files.

I have a Plane and I try tweening a MovieClipSprite on it. I run into trouble when I try to tween near the points where both segment triangles meet (I have kept both segments as 1), While moving near these points the Sprite disappears. I can tell it goes beneath the Plane because when it reappears it does so gradually and I can see it's lower half appearing as it moves away from these points. Increasing the segments obviously deteriorates the performance further as this begins to happen at other points as well. I am pasting some relevant code var planeMaterial:BitmapMaterial = new BitmapMaterial(texture.bitmapData, {smooth: true, precision: 4});

I have been trying to import clipping paths into Flash, but the images look fine, except for the white outline around the imported clipping paths. what I could do to remove this. The clipping path looks fine when I drop it on the same color background in Illustrator. I'm using CS2 and Flash 8.

I wrote a collision detection class that works off using BitmapData.hitTest. Basically, every update, the .draw method is called and then two BitmapData's are hitTest'ed against each other to see if there is a collision.It works pretty well, however if I start rotating the source MovieClip I use for the BitmapData, the transformations don't get registered in the draw method. So what I did was pass through a Matrix in the draw method. That works. But here's the actual issue. If I output the BitmapData to a Bitmap on the stage, I see that Bitmap is, in fact, rotating, but now it's exceeding the bounds (width and height) of the BitmapData. Which is cropping / clipping the image of the source MovieClip.
UPDATE: Basically, when the Bitmap clone of the MovieClip rotates outside the positive co-ordinate space, it doesn't get drawn. It rotates outside the bounds of the BitmapData set width and height. I can multiply the bounds by 2, and then center the bitmap inside the set bounds, but then the origin point is never fixed and the object is always being moved around. Works pretty well, but makes aligning the object to any specific point impossible.Here's my isolated test code. It requires you to have a MovieClip on the stage named "iTest". I used a fairly vertical arrow shape (higher than it is wide) so I could keep track of rotations visually accentuate the clipping problem:
var rotateTimer:Timer = new Timer(10);
function rotateObject_init():void
{

I have a project in Flash Professional CS5 and ActionScript 3.
I have a movieclip symbol (referred herein as "background" with scripts on various keyframes inside of that symbol. I need to hide or show another symbol (referred herein as "object") sharing a stage with "background".
To put it another way, I need "object" to be hidden when "background" reaches a certain internal keyframe. However, as "object" and "background" are both children of the same stage, how do I do this?

I'm doing liquid layouts, and resizing my images while constraining proportions. Here is the code I'm using:
Code:
image.y = (stage.stageHeight/2) - (image.height/2)
resizeMe(image, stage.stageWidth, stage.stageHeight);
//The resizing function
[Code].....
I want it to resize and totally centre itself in the middle of the screen. HOWEVER. I also want to nudge it down 100px, and THEN resize it. I'm having no luck with this though I can move it down 100 px, but then it resizes and positions itself as though it was still in the centre.

I am interested in rotating an object around a central pivot point, on command from two buttons (a + button, and a - button).
This file would essencially be a clock hand, or dot representing the hand, being rotated either clockwise or counter clockwise manually by a plus and minus button.
Things I am unclear about:
1) what forms of syntax, variables, etc, would I need to accomplish this task? I am unclear about the proper protocol for setting up this movement.
2) I have a specific background graphic that all this will be happing on top of, how do I find the desired pivot point coordinates (i am assuming the pivot point is defined by an x and y) in relation to my background graphic?

I have a split screen view with a large image above and a smaller image underneath.There is a zoom window over the smaller image that when dragged around shows the larger image above it being moved at the same time (just that it's bigger uptop)
anyways I can't seem to constrain the movement of the smaller movie clip ... right now you can just click and drag it all over the place ... and I'll like for it to stay dragable only over top of the smaller image...and here is the code in the root.
// The base_mag_factor is the correlation of the small picture to the big picture...
_root.base_mag_factor = 5;
// The mag_factor will change as scaling occurs
_root.mag_factor = _root.base_mag_factor;

How is cropping/clipping accomplished on a Sprite in Flex?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Notice that the lineTo completely leaves the UIComponent and Panel.How can I cause my UIComponent or Sprite, Or Panel for that matter, to be cropped/clipped? I realize I could just change the hard-coded 2222's to something more reasonable, but I need a generalized solution to this, since the actual project doesn't involve hard-coded values that I can alter, but works with dynamic data.

I have a container with a vertical layout inside which I have two other child containers "A" and "B". n the first container "A" there is a component that I would like to resize dynamically based on the available display size. To to that I tried listening to the resize event of the main container and do my measures accordingly. That works somewhat until the parent container reaches a clipping size : container "B" gets clipped earlier than "A" because it contains much more stuffs : As soon as the parent container reaches "B"'s clipping size, it does not resize anymore (so no more resize event either) thus preventing me from updating my component's display in "A".

I have the following code to create a ViewStack which is used as a dataprovider for a TabBar:
<s:TabBar id="objectTab" dataProvider="{vs_objects}"/>
<mx:ViewStack id="vs_objects" width="100%" />
I want to constrain the number of children the ViewStack to avvoid the tabs going out of the screen when the user opens many tabs without closing any. I attempt to do this by removing the oldest element in the ViewStack when the user opens a new tab and the size of the ViewStack is above 9.
private function openTab(object:Object): void {
//Create a new NavigatorContent(form) and add it to the ViewStack[code].........
The image below illustrates my problem, where the dark grey color illustrates the selected Tab. There should only be one selected tab, which works perfectly fine with both the child selection approaches above, when i don't remove a child before selecting a new. When i remove a child and then open a new Tab, the new Tab does not get selected properly, it only gets "painted" in the selected color. In This case Tab 40 is still shown when i open Tab 41 (exceeding 9 tabs). The result of this issue is that Tab 41 is not rendered completely.
UPDATE: The problem was my AS3 code inside the childrens NavigatorContent's that caused the application to behave this way. The solution was using the callLater method:Doric's
code example:
protected function openTab():void
{
var form:Container = new Container();[code]............

I'm working on a volume slider for a type of jukebox and what I'm using is an actual drawing that is on an angle, therefore the volume slider and handle aren't in a straight horizontal line.I've done the basic code to keep the handle within the distance of my slider "line" (left to right), but what I have obviously just constrains it to a rectangle.
on(press){
this.startDrag(false,0,0,32,9);
}
on(release){
this.stopDrag();
}
The slider and handle are both at actual size, that's why it's only 32 pixels wide that I need it to go across and 9 pixels down. I do realize that for what I want, it's much more involved than this simple startDrag code with 4 sets of numbers in it.I'm including the source file in Flash 8/Actionscript 2.0.

I need to know if there is any way to constrain the mouse movements on a startDrag to a line that is not going vertically or horizontally. I'm sure I'll need to use some trig functions, and that's fine, I just haven't been able to find this done anywhere else.

I've been playing with the dynamic audio library standingwave 3. Almost the first thing one notices is that if one tries out the code samples in the developer's guide, namely this code:
[code]...
then one gets a really unpleasant sound and trace messages that read "AUDIO CLIPPING". The developer explains in one of the issue reports on github that you need to reduce the gain of samples when you mix them together to avoid this, and that there's no easy way to know dynamically how much reduction is needed.My question is, how is it that stangingwave2 seems to have dealt with this automatically? For instance, the code quoted above did not clip in SW2. Likewise consider this SW2 example demo - if you increase the sustain and hold (the S/H sliders) and press one of the sequence buttons, multiple tones will overlap without clipping, even though the source doesn't show any apparent sign of changing the gain or the volume of the sin tones, they just get mixed together.What's going on here - did SW2 have some way of dealing with this automagically, or is there some robust way of generally overlaying arbitrary numbers of sounds dynamically without causing clipping?

when I move the camera around my scene the rendering at certain points is odd. Triangles become missing and it seems as though its just not working correctly. When you move the camera beside the cube, triangles along the side of the cube go missing. Is there a way I can turn the clipping off? Should I use more triangles? Is it a material/render engine/viewport problem?

Basically, I have a custom "scrub bar" graphic in which the user can drag a slider forward or backward in time to scrub/seek to a certain point in an external F4V.I have my slider constrained by a rectangle of 1 pixel in height. But when I click with mouse to scrub, my mouse cursor tends to move off of the slider graphic, causing problems with my MOUSE_UP event. (It can't trigger when my mouse is not over the target object).Is there a way like "new Rectangle(32,713,944.1)" to keep the mouse from moving in the Y-axis as the user drags the slider left and right to scrub video?

So this one is a tricky one (for me) vital to the development of my project due to the fact that we can't directly modify the position of mouseX and mouseY - they are read-only variables. Basically, what I want to do is have a player able to move their mouse only within a certain triangular area when a specific instance is active. The latter bit I can manage just fine, however I am having trouble restricting mouse movement -- or apparent mouse movement.
Here's what I have done so far:
1. Assign a library moveclip to the mouseX and mouseY position in the Event.ENTER_FRAME event - although I acknowledge that this should be moved to Mouse.MOUSE_MOVE. (this does not matter yet)
2. Using Corey O'Neils Collision detection kit, do a hit test on the border instances of the area with the crosshair/cursor.
3. Offset the cursor appropriately, and then set a standard Boolean value to false so that the cursor will not keep bouncing back into the cursor over and over.
My problem is, I am not sure what the best way is to go about allowing mouse movement again. For what it's worth, this is to stop users from aiming in an unrealistic direction with a character in a top-down (ish) shooter.
Here is my code regarding mouse movement thus far:
import flash.ui.Mouse;
import flash.events.event
import com.coreyoneil.collision.CollisionList;
Mouse.hide();
var c:crosshair = new crosshair();
addchild(c);
var myCollisionList:CollisionList;
myCollisionList = new CollisionList(c);

We are developing our app in flash/flex builder for the front end hitting .NET backend webservices. There is one section of the old app that will not be initially converted, so we need have it appear in an iFrame.
So far all that works fine.We shrink the size of the SWF in the host page to just be the menu/nav area. And underneat that I have an iframe control that loads in this page from the old site.Now the problem. in the SWF is a drop down list to enable picking a client. Since the SWF has been shrunk to about 100px high, the drop-down will only occupy within that 100px area which it's opened. This is NOT good as you can imagine. How can I make the drop-down list descend over-top of the IFRAME control and thus extend outside the SWF dimensions? Is this possible?
I tried to make the internal stage transparent and leave the SWF a little larger, about 400 px high, but the IFRAME still appears behind the SWF.
