Bottom line is I don't always need to peer into SWC's, and I don't like having a 'default package' automatically created for me. Not sure why the interface wasn't made simpler, allowing access to more power and complexity only if necessary. I want to focus on the code, not on how to navigate and use the bells and whistles in the coding environment.
I want to create a photo browser web widget that can be embedded in a web page (e.g alice's blog) but I am not sure whether I should go the flash or javascript route. Flickr went with a flash based widget. Why would they do it in flash over javascript? why would you chose js based widget over flash.

View 1 RepliesI have a client where some of their employees have flash installed and some don't. So always using the swfuploader module widget isn't going to work and it doesn't gracefully fall back to HTML. In fact it just leaves a non-functioning button in its wake.
So what I would like to do is detect when they don't have Flash available and switch to the standard Drupal File Upload widget. Now in my head it seems like this would only work if done on the server-side. But can that even be done reliably on the server side?
Also, can this on-the-fly widget switching even work in Drupal or will it pitch a fit?
I am importing quicktime videos into flash from premiere (cs3) and exporting them --- however, for some odd reason (and this does not happen consistently) small pink boxes show up towards the bottom of the screen for a couple frames and then disappear in the final product (Flash file). I've exported the movie several times and sometimes they do not show up at all; other times, they are present in various places in the movie. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing these bizarre artifacts in the final export?

I call them like this:[code]I've also used assets, especially for different states of the same item, where I've put everything in one movie clip and then switched frames as needed. I'm a programmer and I've learn some basic knowledge about Flash Builder. What I can do with it now is to use the components and somethings override the redraw function to design my own components. However, I find that is a inefficient way and I seems to complex to achieve the animation with only codes. Are there some way to develop with Flash Builder and Flash CS? And how to make animation without complex code? Could you recommend some books for me?

A graphic designer came up with some designs for the app but I have never converted a photoshop document into a Flex skin or for that matter made a custom Flex skin by any means. Is it possible to take the photoshop work and put it into Flash or something? What exactly goes into Flex skins? If I were to contact this out, how much am I looking to spend on a 8 page app?
View 1 RepliesFlash Player 10.2.153.1and Flash Player 10.2.159.1 are crashing my standalone application. Later with version 10.1 the application run ok, never crashes but was taking more than 90% CPU. The new Flash Player solve the problem of resources, and drop down CPU to 30%, but the application crashes always after a while, unespectly, or if I open the window of other application.
In the other hand when I disable the harware acceleration at the swf settings, the application goes crazy and start to make rapid flashes, and frame rate goes down to 8. [URL]. Right click on the Flash logo, Settings,then UNcheck the hardware acceleration in Display Settings.)
I'm on a Mac Mini Core 2 Duo with Mac OS X 10.6.7 (the last Snow Leopard these days). The graphical card is Nvidia GeForce 9400M.
I did test the application at a Mac Book Pro core i5, Mac OS X 10.6.7, graphica card Nvidia GeForce GT 330M and the application is more stable but finally crashes too.
Finally if I export my application with GPU Hardware acceleration at Publish Settings, my application crashes almost inmediatly after I open it in each of the computers.
My guess is that the new Flash Version is using my graphical proccesor in a corrupted way.

I have my main application, which contains several instances of a component that create a grid of photos belonging to a certain category. (the grids, and the photos are created dynamically with a loop).
I'd like to be able to click a photo to run a function that loads the large version of the photo into a separate element that is contained in the main application. So I created a Photo component in my main application, but how, using actionscript, do I change the 'currentphoto' variable in my main application from inside the tileview component?
Alternately I could put the function in the main application (probably more logical in the long run), but how would I call it from the child component?
If I have a component that has some states defined, is there a way to make changes in design mode but not have it tied to a particular state? For example, if I have state1 and state2, any changes in design mode will be based on state1 or state2 (i.e. width.state1). I understand this is the direction Flex is going in but I'm transitioning from a Flex 3 app and right now I just want to make the change to width and not width.state1.

Is there any way to get Flex Builder to connect to an existing browser session running Flash Player Debugger? I can connect to FDB like this, but with Builder I need to click Debug and rush to close the newly opened browser window before it loads the Flash file and then go back to the session I want to connect and right click it to start the debugger.
Unfortunately this is not very reliable as I can't always beat the window opening, requiring several attempts before being able to connect to the session I am interested in. If I could just tell Builder 'Start debugging' and then have it wait for the connection, I could now calmly go over to the browser, right click, hit debug, provide the IP and voila. This would allow me to inspect variables on a hard to replicate bug on a session running on a tester's computer.

I am not any kind of network programming pro, but it happened that I have faced necessity to develop socket-server on php (no way for using Java) for flash multiplayer browser-game (standard features like locations, team battles, etc).
The main problem is that TCP is point-to-point protocol and it completely occupies given port.Of course it is possible to create some kind of queue, which will manage connections to the socket, but this solution doesn't seems to be the fittest one.
It seems to me that using interval of "fair" ports (from 2000 to 2200, for example) is more fitting solution, because one request may take a lot of time to execute and players won't be happy to wait in queue.
But how can I implement this "port inteval" strategy?The solutions that I see are:
launcing php-script per every port (he-he, 2 hundreds of launched scripts!);somehow forking the initial process to new processes (2 hundreds of processed? Not nice too), one for every port;additional while-loop, which listens all the ports (looks very bad);using threading or something like that (the problem is that php is single-threaded, as far as I know; pcntl?).But somehow I don't like any of them, or at least don't know how to implement them in the best possible way.
What is the best existing strategy to handle multiple requests from multiple users per time unit without delays, and how to implement this strategy in php? We have our own Debian-server, so it is possible to use any required php extensions.
For example, if we are trying to develop chat application, we need some sort of fixed (I mean persistent) connections for each user. For example, we have 80 users in chat, and then one of them posted a message, which server tries to handle and send to all other connected users, also putting an entry to the history file or something like that.
In this situation polling server for new messages every 10 seconds from each of 80 users is craziness, so the need in persistent connection gets obvious.But I don't know what is the best way to implement something like this, considering that not all requests are handled instanlty.

View 1 RepliesI have two (+) systems on a local network running an AIR application that need to send/receive updated positions and other events between each other. I'm currently using an AIR-based socket server one of the instances. The AMF and strong typing works great. What doesn't, however, is the syncing between clients.
In my example below, clientA is trying to send an AMF packet to clientB. The SOCKET_DATA events fire off as expected on the server, in sync with the mouse, however the data that clientB receives very quickly gets out of sync and events are lost.
It's fine if an occasional event gets dropped, however I need to know the most recent SOCKET_DATA event has the latest data. Instead, it just contains increasingly older data.

I've seen it can connect to databases, but I haven't seen anything with it working with sockets, for instance a P2P chat using only an IP and a port to send an receive messages.
