IDE :: SWF - Stream Playback Or Full Download?
Nov 20, 2008
I have sort of a general Flash question. Are swf's supposed to start playing back only once the entire file has been downloaded to the client machine, or start "streaming playback" just as soon as the client has downloaded enough data to start playing at all. Let's say I have a 20mb file. Here's what I've noticed: Firefox 3 starts playing back the file right away, only having downloaded a small percentage of the file - essentially offering "streaming" playback. Internet explorer 7, on the other hand, seems to wait for the entire swf to be downloaded before it starts.
This is a problem for me because it's about a 30 second wait for anyone trying to view the files on IE, while on Firefox, they start up within a few seconds. I tried putting in a preloader, but that slows things down considerably on Firefox, because now instead of streaming, even the Firefox users have to wait for the entire file to download before they can begin viewing it. To see what I'm talking about for yourself, click this link in both IE and Firefox and see the difference.

I am using FLVPlayback Component in Flash AS3 to play an F4V video hosted on a different server. I want it to start playing as soon as possible, but the video won't start playing until the F4V is completely downloaded (I checked with Firebug). I tried fooling around with the component's bufferTime parameter, but it didn't seem to make a difference. For what it's worth, the SWF is being embedded in a Facebook profile using the FBML tag fb:swf, although I can't see how that would make a difference here.

I'm just finishing off a project that has to run in full-screen mode, but I'm having trouble adding this feature. couple of quick details.I'm using Flash CS3, ActionScript 2.0, targetting Flash Player 9 (this could change, but I have to stick with AS2 and CS3)The movie will be the only thing running on a touchscreen installation, Windows PC.I tried using this:
fscommand2("FullScreen", true);
but it didn't work for me. I get this compiler error:Scene=Scene 1, layer=Navigation, frame=1, Line 1
The currently targeted Flash Player does not support the FSCommand2 action.I've tried changing the target player version, but all seem to generate the same error.

I'm building an .swf with video to play in the standalone Flash Player. It works perfectly fine when the swf is not full-screened. However, as soon as I test it as a published swf, the video does not load. I know the video is not loading because:1) I can't see it.2) Elements that are triggered by cuepoints in the video are not triggering.3) The movie clips and graphics that over lay this video still play, but only when the swf is not full-screened.I am adding the video directly onto the timeline. Here is the Action Script I am using at that frame:
Actionscript Code:
import fl.video.VideoEvent;import fl.video.MetadataEvent;var curCue:Number = 1;//This is the current cue point.introVideo.fullScreenTakeOver =

I'm recording a stream from a webcam as an f4v file using FMS 3.5. The file is created in the live folder, and i can stream it back to the client no problem, however when I try to play the file in Adobe Media Player (or anything else) it won't play. I've used the f4v post processor which claims to run successfully, but with no joy.

I am having some problems with buffering sounds. I am doing a MP3 player for my site and everything seems ok except that I can't get the full length of a sound before it finishes downloading/buffering and it's messing my progressBar. That's my code:
position = (soundChannel.position / sound.length);
Sound.length returns the total length of the downloaded data at the moment and not the full length of my Mp3 file.
Let's say I have 1 minute long Mp3 file and I only downloaded 30secs of it, if my playback reaches 15secs of the sound, it will say that I am at 50% of the song and not 25%. Is there anyway to know the full length of a file before it finishes downloading? So I can make a buffer download progress bar (like youTube does, so you know how much u have downloaded) and a songProgressBar. I've read some things about the NetStream class but I don't know if it will solve my problem. I don't have Flash media server.. it would load the file form the local file system.

I have a custom Flash video player that uses the NetConnection and NetStream classes to stream mp4 files from a Wowza server. Lately the playback has been having audio problems. The sound is crackled and in some cases may cause the Flash player to crash. This is not consistent between files. Meaning that a file that was played once with bad audio could be fine 5 minutes later when played again from a new instance of the player , but 5 minutes later have the same problem.
My thought direct me to thinking this was an encoding problem, but that wouldn't explain how one second the playback is fine, and once refreshed messes up again.
I should note that the Wowza server does not stream the entire file but only a portion of it based on various parameters it gets.

I don't think there is much to add to the subject. It is a bug, anyhow. Let's say I am playing content from publisher which is displayed in a video. I then close the stream, and issue a play call for content B on this same stream object. If publisher B is slow enough (no new data arrives for a short while), I manage to catch a glimpse of OLD UNRELATED content from publisher A! Why is this, and is there anything I can do about it? By the way Video.clear is broken in Flash Player 10, and that's public knowledge. However, I am not sure the clear method alleviates the problem. Even if you clear the video, the stale data appears afterwards anyway.

I have two identical-length videos that I need to stream and play back concurrently while staying in sync. The best I can do so far is keep them about a second apart, but I'm wondering if there's a way to force them to actually stay in perfect sync? Oh yeah: I'm using AS3. (Ideally, I'd just have a series of JPGs instead of the second video and load the relevant image via cuePoint, but that aspect is out of my control.)
Second, what's the best/ideal method of knowing what I can only think of as "percent buffered"? These videos I'm loading are hosted on a Flash Media Server (which I don't have control over or access to, short of loading files from it), and while bytesLoaded/Total works for progressive stuff, I know it doesn't work for streamed stuff. Full disclosure: I know very little about working with serving video in Flash (obvious, I'm sure)(I'm not using the FLVPlayback component.)

'URL missing from Media tag' on FMS4.5 HTTP Live Stream playback.I have spent a whole day trying in vain to publish f4m live http streams from FMLE using FMS 4.5, and almost everything I try results in the error .The F4M document contains errors URL missing from Media tag...in both Flash Media Playback and the fms videoPlayer app.Other people seem to have seen this and solved it, but I've found nothing that helps. I have tried to publish a single stream, and with multiple bitrates. For the latter, I followed the Adobe video tutorial as follows:
Multiple bitrate live

I'm publishing 3 streams from FMLE, using

I'm trying to setup a server-side playlist for playing back mp3 files, though I stumble into a weird FMS behaviour. I'm using latest FMS 4.0.2 Here is how I try to publish the stream (Server-side ActionScript):
[CODE]....
On the client side, I try to play it using NetStream.play("boo"). Though, the sound quality I get is really weird. The sound goes slower and faster and stops for a split of a second. It may play properly for a couple of seconds, but that's all. Sounds like a decoder problem to me, or a bitrate conversion problem. When I play the stream with NetStream.play("mp3:rhcp") the playback goes smoothly. I've tried several mp3 files with different bitrates, but they all have the same problem.

So I basically have used the fileReference class to allow the user to download a determined file if he wants to.
I use the file.download(URL) function and it works well.
However, the file is downloaded and saved to the hard drive using only the flash player. The browser is not aware of the download, and thus, if I want to show the progress of the download I'd have to make some progress bar myself. I know how to do it, but it would become really tedious and take too much UI space.
Isn't there a damn way in Flash to "send" a determined file to the browser so that it prompts the user to download it? It's an image file, so navigateToURL doesn't cut it since it will just display the image, both if I use a new tab or the current one.

I generate a HTML page with VB.Net which stores several pinks to files. These links are formatted with JavaScript looking like the Windows-Explorer with folders and files. The problem: There are only download links for the files, not for Folders. A folder can contain Subfolders ,a List of Files or a combination of both. So if I want to download a folder, I have to click manually on every file-link. I have not the possibility to insert PHP or another Server-side language. my question now is: Is there a client side way to Download them by click on a Folder? I prefer Javascript but If it isn't possible Flash will be ok also.

Only just getting started on this whole domain of learning, so go easy!If I set up a P2P video/audio chat (similar to the sample VideoPhone thing on the Cirrus site), can I get the stream from both parties to send to a server at the same time so that I can record it? If so, would I have to use a FMS to stream it to and perform the recording (and if so which version could I get away with)? Are there any (preferably free, or just tutorialised) solutions for the recording side of things?
Currently it seems like the only option for doing the P2P thing is to use Stratus/Cirrus unless I use FMS4 Enterprise.
how effective this kind of situation can be, in terms of quality of the stream and recording? Does any of this make sense?

I've had FMS running on my local machine for a while and have had a little experience writing FMS apps, but I've just tried recording audio for the first time using the standard vod application and I keep getting a "Write access denied for stream" error. My AS3 code is copied and pasted for various examples and am confident that it works.
I'm running Windows XP service pack 3 & FMIS 3.5.
I've had a look at the vod/media directory and under windows->properties the read-only attribute is ticked. Every time I un-tick this it reverts back to being ticked. I've googled this and MS say that most programs ignore the read-only attribute and that it only really applied to files. I've also tried the MS fix for setting the read-only attribute via cmd and still no joy (doesn't fix read-only attribute or FMS recording the audio after setting via cmd).
I've also tried our dev server install of FMS (running under linux) and am getting the same results.
Here's my AS3 code...
private function initApp(event:Event):void
{
removeEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE,initApp);

I build a client side application where is only a FLVPlayback2.5 component and a short AS3 script.

My Encoder is setup with three streams: Vid: 500 kbps - Audio: 48 kbpsVid: 800 kbps - Audio: 48 kbpsVid: 1500 kbps - Audio: 48 kbps I start the encoder and everything looks fine in the log. In my browser (Safari or Firefox) I go to my html site and the stream starts after 6-8 sec. But anytime with the lowest bitrate 548 kbps and nothing look like the stream is switching to another bitrate. I tried it with the smil playlist and the result is the same. Only the lowest bitrate is plublished.

I'm having a problem with recording a live webcam stream. The last few seconds of the stream is getting cut off.
The recording is stopped with the following piece of code:
vid.attachCamera(null);
vid.clear();
ns.attachCamera(null);
ns.attachAudio(null);
ns.pause();
What could be causing this? Is the stream cut off too soon? Is the client unable to send buffered data to the server?

I have a layout with narration and a nav bar. When I click a nav button for section 2, the audio from section 1 (set to stream) continues to play over the audio for section 2. This cumulates so if I click buttons for sections 3, 4 and 5, I get five audio files playing on top of each other. Sections are individual movie clips with embedded audio streaming on a Sounds layer in each movie clip.

I am very new to action script. I want to stop the stream from publishing then later on i want to publish the same stream again. My problem is that I have 3 levels of stream processing (Ingress-Rename ProxyLimelight-AuthProxy-Live) before it goes live. User wants to stop stream from publishing and then publish the same stream when he wants in each level. User does not want to start the stream from the begining, he wants to restart the stream on the same where he stopped.
