View 5 RepliesI'm pretty new/bad at actionscript (3) for web. I have a site up for a client/friend [URL], but it takes FOREVER to load. I'm under the impression that a good way to make the site load faster is to load in swf's externally. Right now, the site, in its entirety, is one big movieclip. I have large images (movieclips) for background images. If you look at the site and are kind enough to wait for it to load (aprox. 45 seconds or so) you will notice how the background image changes when you click to go to each section.
I am trying to find a way to load in the background as external .swf's to cut down on the initial load time. I'm also open to any other ideas. Below is the as3 code for my buttons/how they direct the site. I'm hoping to use a similar/generic style to load the background images. I'm hoping to load the movieclips underneath the rest of the site, and use the same naming scheme (e.g. homeBTN.swf) to keep it organized.

I have come up with a different scenario when am working with videos. I am trying to load a flv externally. And when am compiling the flash file i got this strange error and nothing is loading (ie flv file) Warning: Filter will not render. The DisplayObject�s filtered dimensions ([width], [height]) are too large to be drawn.

Of course I have been thinking about passing data to functions, but I can't make it work.
It is not necessary that NF1.jpg and the txts are mentioned in this code like they are now, it also could be something like a,b,c and d. So actually it is not about changing, but about being able to load different jpg's and MC's in this swf, so that I wouldnt have to use one hundred swf's!
I'm trying to externally load a swf at a certain time on the timeline. Right now I am loading it by using an on(release) with buttons, but I need the first to load as the timeline reaches the certain number. I'm using this code for the buttons.

View 1 RepliesTrying to load images dynamically from library NOT externally since i want these images to be loaded when the site is launched. Basically i have several buttons, each button returns an event that throws a specific image name to grab. Here is the function;

So how can i make this function dynamic by using a String and then grabbing the image related to that string from the library.
I'm not new to flash as2 but as3 is a whole other animal to me. What I have is on button click my script will load a swf movie into a movie clip (videoLoader_mc). What I'm trying to do but can't seem to get is when the parent swf gets to a certain point in the time line I need it to unload what ever movie is in that videoLoader_mc. I am trying to modify the hover caption tutorial from here at Kirupa to load the text in the caption from an external text file. Could anyone give me a hand trying to figure this out?I tried the simple way of loading external text but because the text is loaded in a MovieClip this does not work. I'm building a basic tile game containing 3 layers of 'tiles' image the game has a dimension of 3x3 my data array's look like this:

How can i load this data from an external file which is easy to edit for the level-desiners ? (and what is best to use, xml, json,?) Is is not better to just use 1 datafile instead of 3 and what is the best way to do this?

In my externally loaded swf.s are a pause and play button which work perfectly using only:

(yanm being the name of my movie file containing my movie!!) and obviosuly the stop is with a stop!
Now I want to add a 'Mute' button so that the user can turn off the audio. What script would I use for this?
I also want to use a 'Rewind' or 'Restart' button to return to the beginning of my movie and begin playback again. What script would be used instead of .play?
I've loaded an external swf file that containes two links, to another swf file using loadMovie (); I want to add link from the file we've loaded from the container swf file. Is it possible.
You can say that first make the links itself in the file we've externally loaded. But i want to know whether my requeirement is possible in not. Another think is what is the use of third optional argument in the loadMovie (url, target, method);

I have successfully loaded XML data into a SWF file and am able to get values from the XML without much problem. The code works. For example my test productimage[1].toString(); is returning back the correct value from the XML file.My issue is when I load this SWF into another, a preloader, the code no longer works? The preloader is working fine and the rest of the SWF file is loaded in succesffully, even the XML data appears to be working when I run a trace i.e. trace(e.target.data.toString()), but for some reason the individual data values such as productimage are no longer being defined??]code]

This is for skinning purposes. I want to be able to load a button.swf file into my main movie ( the button.swf has no actionscript in it at all, just the graphics ) and then make it an instance of a existing class like for example button.as . the clips are not in the library so i can not specify the class in the linkage properties. It has to be loaded externally.

I need to be able to load a couple of external.swf files and have them play sequentially. To do that, I need to know the number of frames in the first .swf file so that I can check _currentframe against _totalframes to determine when it is finished playing so that I can load the second one.Most of the tips I see indicate that _totalframes on an external .swf can be determined by loading the.swf into a container clip and then checking using a listener within .onLoadInit. Like this:

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work. The trace always returns a total frames of 1.I imagine this is because the container movie clip only has 1 frame, and the external .swf timeline appears to be ignored.how to gather the total frames of an external .swf file or, alternatively, tell in some other way when it is finished playing. (Not just loading, but playing to the end.)
i have a test website here which has externally loaded files coming into the container on the main index page. the code on the buttons at the top right hand corner have this code on each of them for the externally loaded .swf files to come in:

and that all works perfectly fine. what my problem is is when i click on the "contact" button and i'm on that page. on the left hand side column towards the bottom, i have a block of text with one red word. i want that word to bring in the f.a.q. page (and replace the contact page i'm currently looking at) which can also be accessed from the top nav. just a little thing, but i wanted to learn how to do it.
i've put the same code into the invisible button that says "faq" which is identical to the code listed above except i changed all instances of "_root" to "_parent" but that didn't do it. i think it's something like that that would have to do with the problem.
