Specifically, I attached a swf file to an email and it showed up as 5.9kb I then downloaded that same file from the email and in the finder window the file size was indicated to be 16kb. I further right clicked on the same file located on the desktop and clicked info now the file size was 120kb.
My question is which of these represent the real file size. The reason I ask is that for a class project we are to build a banner ad and the file size is limited to 40kb. I am telling the instructor that it is only 5.9kb she is saying 120 kb.

I am making some flash banners for a college website and the CBS guidelines require all file size be less than 40k.How the hell can you do anything with that?!
A) Do unused library items effect file .swf size?
B) I'm using a lower res .jpg for a background which is about 10k, and each line of text i use for only 40 frames is like 20k! (3 sets of text=60k) Why is simple text so large?
C) Creating movie clips and tweens doesn't really seem to affect file size, is that mostly accurate?
D) Everything considered, is the main thing that affects final .swf size the size of each file used on the timeline? Is there a best practice for converting graphics to graphic clips, movie clips, symbols, etc.?

So I have this .fla file that a freelancer made for me before. I noticed that the mp3's he imported have really low size of about 800kb only for each sound. When I sent this songs to him, they were in WMA files and have 3MB size each. I noticed that the file location says "program files/total video converter/...", so I assume that he used the Total Video Converter software to convert the WMA to MP3. But how was he able to make the size to only 800KB? Because I tried other converters and the size doesn't change significantly. Lastly, I noticed that it says in the properties "50.0% of original" and the use imported mp3 quality is checked! Also, since the above situation has a WMA file. How about if I already have the mp3 file? How can I reduce the size?

The home page of our site (URL...) uses Flash animation that was created by an agency outside of our organization. We are undergoing a site redesign and are interested in giving our Flash characters less real estate, so I am trying to determine if it is possible to make the characters smaller.I thought I might be able to do that with the height/width attribute of the object tag in the html, but I guess that would have been too easy.I know zip about Flash but do have CS3 at my disposal. Is there a way within the .fla file to make the animation smaller?

I made a banner that will appear at the top of a website, though I just found out I need to decrease the width of it. I would like to export it at a smaller size, so I go to Publish Settings and I notice I can change the width and height. How can I do this while maintaing its proportions? It is currently 791 x 275. Using CS3.

I'm making a post-apocalyptic series and I'm drawing all my backgrounds/characters in photoshop and importing them into flash. The problem I'm encountering is that the file size is WAAAAAAAAY too big whenever I import the character drawing straight from photoshop. Is there some trick to making characters look like they're drawn in photoshop or some trick to greatly lowering the file size? Three items on screen at once with no animation and my file size is over 1 meg.

I have been asked to compress a commercial for a client for web. The spot is 300x250 at 10 seconds and I am exporting an flv out of After Effects. I have taken the bit rate down as low as possible and can only get it down to about 872kb. Is there any solution to lowering it down to the required 40k file size.
Also, for delivery would i just need to send the swf and html or does the flv need to go

have a series of ad banners which must fall within a 35kb size allowance. The banners aren't huge and the main image file is 12kb (JPEG) at the smallest, any smaller and there's anoticeable degrade in image quality. The swf's are coming out at 40kb, is there anything ican do to shave off a few kb's? I've tried everything i can think of (lowering the JPEG quality in Flash).Another hurdle is that i need to supply a GIF alternative, again under the 35kb this seems to be the hardest task! at the moment they're coming out at 220k

When it comes to imported vector graphics are there any methods to decrease the swf's file size as much as possible? So far I have:
- imported an illustrator ai file (strokes 'expanded' in illustrator and unneeded swatches/ brushes etc. deleted and with no raster images embedded)
- exported the file in illustrator as swf and imported that swf into flash
- imported ai file and breaking it down to flash shapes
- optimized those shapes as much as possible
I rather use vector as much as possible. For a banner for examle, I've imported vector images of trees. I couldn't get it below 40 kb so I exported all illustrator files to png files which helped. Can detailed vector images be optimized just as much? Or is it better to use bitmap files when it comes to more detailed graphics? Does it matter if it is a vector images made in flash or a imported vector file even if both have the same number of paths?

I've created an eBook that's 972 X 500 pixels (13.5" X 7"). The image in the browser is roughly 9.5 inches wide. Is there a way to make the browser display the image at actual size? Am I missing something here? The SWF file does print out at the true size from the browser.

I need to first express that I'm a fully self-taught Flash designer. No one has ever sat down and tried to explain to me the DOs and DONTs about Flash. I have followed tutorials, books, and anything else I can get my hands on, but never a person. People of Flash seem to be very hard to find, in my personal experience.I am the most comfortable with Photoshop, knowing very little about Illustrator or Fireworks. That said, I have been asked to create a 45KB (yikes!) max file, rotating 3 .jpg images I created from other .jpgs given to me. The images are usually large, so I am given room to compress them for a 300px x 250 px stage.
However, these images are always my biggest culprit for my huge file size. I'll import them in, making them into Graphic Symbols, but nothing seems to prevent the enourmous file size. When given the raw images, I would throw them into Photoshop, make the files the correct 300x250 size. Then I have tried: saving the image at the best resolution in .jpg and .png form, and then I tried saving the images as low-as-I-could-stomach quality. I hardly see a difference with file size when they are imported into Flash and used.I was told to use Fireworks's Optimize function, which I did, but it made my .swf even biggerWhen I have my Flash piece all set up/animted as I want, but I need to replace the bitmap(.jpg/.png) photos, I will:right click on the bitmap to get properties, "upload" the new image to be used, adjust the Quality, having "Allow smoothing" unclicked.
I understand I should make as much of the graphics in Flash as I can, instead of Import, but I am primarily given photographs to use.Seeing what my previous peers have done is mind-puzzling, but they are not around, so I cannot ask them for their advice. Their files are under 45KB and look sharp and amazing:[URL]

I'm using the Flash CS4 IDE, and the first page of my site takes a lot longer to load than I want it to. So I wanted to go through the varied images / symbols / movie clips / sounds and so on to see where all the memory is being chewed up. When I go into my library, however, I can see the Name, LInkage, usecound and Type of my elements, but no mention of file size and I can't seem to find any right click menu that lets me add file size to the list of details being displayed. Is there a way to make it show file size? Or some workaround? And are there any best practices to reduce file size aside from using symbols for anything that's used more than once and reducing image and sound quality?

I am new to Flash CS5 and I have created a slide show. I am trying to reduce the .swf file size for faster loading. I have been trying to adjust the size using the jpeg quality slider, but it doesn't seem to function whether I set it to 0 or 100 or anywhere in between. Publishing always generates the same size swf file.

I am trying to build a flash that auto-adjust its size to the browser window size, while leaving the content of the flash itself top-centered in the screen.I have found this solution [URL].. on How to keep centered stuff in this exact case so i am pretty confident i will be able to adjust that script to do what i want.
Now my problem is that if i put my content inside the movie-clip (centerrectangle) with all the animation require, link and other stuff, the movieclip (center rectangle ) never have the exact same center, thus making the script go wild trying to always adjust the location to the variable size of the movie clip.

I made a preloader for my single scene movie and although the preloader is about 16k, when placed into frame 1 of the movie and tested, the frame is shown to have about 256k, which is larger than the movie it's loading. I've gone through all the files and made sure that export in frame 1 is not checked and made sure the publish settings also are set to export in frame 1.

Is there any "mainstream" library used for this purpose? Commonly spread, well maintained, documented etc.I found these (using flash):
Uploadify - not many releases, latest 12/2010, no documentation (!)
SWFUpload - latest release 03/2010, documentation
fancyupload - looks buggy.
phpfileuploader - looks heavyweight, and looks commercial (?) I cannot read the licence (you can download it but are you allowed to use it forever without paying?) plupload New version of pure javascript (no flash) Valums' ajax upload claims to handle file size limit and progress bar, which is quite suspicious to me: these features require to guess the file size before the upload, which seems impossible in javascript (look also here). Or can it work?
