i want to finish it in the end! i have this code which generated 20 stars and an ai player collects all of them (going for the one which is closest to it). This code was courtesy of -lauri... the code was

I'm trying to place 12 MC's on random coordinates. In the attached zip file you can see their positions. I was thinking that I could have an array, in which each 'item' represents an x and a y position for one of the MC's. This array should then be randomized, so that when the thumbs.swf is loaded each MC ends up on one of the 12 predefined positions randomly, so that every time you load the MC's are in different positions. But how do you store two values in an array item? Amnos already helped me out big-time with a different approach I had in mind, but I could not figure out how to continue with this... not doing more with what you gave me...this is the address to that thread:[URL]..

What I really want to do is, what I described above and once all MC are loaded, let them appear in a random order. For example, all is loaded and then make the MC's apperar sequentially with an alpha fade-in from top left to bottom right...or the other way 'round, or build it up in columns.

I'm working on a simple tutorial, and I'd like to randomly generate the positions of the red and green boxes in the accompanying images anywhere inside the dark gray area, but not in the white area. Are there any particularly elegant algorithms to do this? There are some hackish ideas I have that are really simple (continue to generate while the coordinates are not outside the inside rectangle, etc.)

i'm trying to trace the x and y coordinates from within a sprite. i've added a rectangle to the stage:

var rect:Rectangle = new Rectangle(10, 10, 200, 200);
addChild(rect);
rect.x = rect.y = 100;

adding a Mouse_Move event to the rect, i can trace mouseX and mouseY to receive the coordinates of the stage while moving over the rect, but how do i get the local x and y coordinates? so if i mouse over the very top left of the rect sprite, the mouseX and mouseY return 10 as the global coordinates, but how do i make it return 0 and the local coordinates of the sprite?

i assumed localX and localY was what i was looking for, but this doesn't work:

Flex :: Display A Tooltip Only If The Mouse Cursor Is Within Certain Coordinates?

Within my component, I'm drawing some rectangles as below:

I need to display a custom tooltip for each rectange when the mouse cursor is hovering over it.

How can I do this? I'm using the MouseMove event to track when the cursor moves over these coordinates (that part is working), but when I change the tooltip text it's not refreshing

EDIT: The problem seems to be with the following line:

ToolTipManager.destroyToolTip(_myToolTip);


If I comment out the preceding line, it will display the new tooltip, but it will keep creating new ones and the old ones never get removed. But if I add that line, it doesn't add any tooltips! Is the code not being executed sequentially, i.e., is the code to remove the tooltip somehow getting executed after the code to add the tooltip?

When tracing the mouseX / mouseY or localX / localY coordinates of a display object, why does x start at 1 while y starts at 0? For example, I've drawn a simple 400 x 400 pixel sprite onto the stage with a MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE event listener that calls a handler function to trace the local coordinates of the mouse. The first, top-left pixel returns {x:1, y:0} and the last, bottom-right pixel returns {x:400, y:399}. Shouldn't both the x and y start and end with the same value? I'm not sure which makes more sense for a the first mouse coordinate (either 0 or 1) but it certainly doesn't make sense that they are different?

I have 35 movie clips named mcMyObject1, mcMyObject2, etc. to mcMyObject35Each time the playhead enters the frame this code sits on, I want all of these 35 movie clips to be placed on the stage in random orderI want each one of these 35 movie clips to land on one of these X coordinates: 57, 187, 317, 447, 577, 707, 837 and on one of these Y coordinates: 53, 183, 131, 443, 573. I'd like to be able to use some raw 3d coordinates from a text file and display them, joined sequentially in a wireframe model. Then be able to rotate, scale etc the resulting model. The coordinates aren't from a 3d drawing package but rather measured - therefore each point is literally assigned three numbers, in a tab delimited file. With a large number of points (i.e. over 100) is there a way to load in the file and then generate the resulting model?

I was trying to convert global coordinates to local coordinates of a UIComplenent in my flex project using below code using below code

var gp:Point = new Point(e.stageX,e.stageY); //global point
var lp:Point = uic.globalToLocal(gp); //local point

uic is UIComponent in which I have subclass of Sprite for drawing something I have set the sprite's mouseEnabled and mouseChildren to false to not interrupt the mouse event. above code is within uic's mousemove event where I was tracing the gp and lp gp was giving correct value and suprisingly lp was giving negetive values. when I move the move to the top left corner of uic i expect lp to be 0,0 but it is giving the -width of of uic. I broke my head for hours and ended up finding an alternate by using offsets. Infact my original code was much simpler like this which was same issue

var lp:Point = new Point(e.localX,e.localY);

I am not sure what exactly is causing this problem. the workaround had lot of issues and it creating a mess in my rest of the algorithms.Just now I found even more interesting thing (which is actually weird). for some reason I went and create a new lp2

var lp2:Point = new Point(e.localX,e.localY);

now surprisingly it was giving correct values as expected and I went back and changed the code as

var gp:Point = new Point(e.stageX,e.stageY); //global point
var lp:Point = uic.globalToLocal(gp); //local point
var lp2:Point = new Point(e.localX,e.localY);
var lp2:Point = uic.globalToLocal(gp);

now it is expected to have all the lp, lp2 and lp3 variables to be same but weiredly lp two is giving wrong value and lp2 and lp3 were giving correct. I am suspecting using the variable lp has something to do. I am not sure about that but above proves it so right now I am using lp2.

I was reading the 'Isometric Transformations' tutorial by Danko Kozar and I have a few questions. I understand what all the code does, but not how it does it. First of all, how does the following code work:

transforms x,y,z coordinates into Flash x coordinate

I understand that it converts 3d coordinates to 2d coordinates, but I don't understand how. What numbers whould be punched into x, y, and z to acquire certain desired effects?Also, what's the difference between moveTo and lineTo:

Second Random Factor Is Which Image In That Group To Display?

I'm still very much a newbie when it comes to AS3. I need to create an external image scroller. That's simple enough, but these images are of people of different ethnics groups, roughly divided into four categories. So, the pictures need to be randomized two-dimensionally. The first random factor is which of the four groups to choose from. The second random factor is which image in that group to display. That way, no ethnic group is favored over another.

I've gotten fairly far...when I test my Flash file and click the Start button, you'll see the first random image. Wait a few seconds, and the second will appear. All well and good...but the logic for how to randomize and automatically display all 15 images eludes me, despite days of research.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I tried to upload the test files but they're too big, so the code is below.

Flash :: Display Three Images, Chosen At Random On Load?

I'm looking to display three images, chosen at random on load, throughout the duration of a banner ad.Basically, these images are health tips displayed on post it's - as it plays, the post-it's fly off, revealing the next tip.I also need ensure that the images don't repeat I 'm mostly a timeline guy, but I've been learning AS and have no problem getting one image to display randomly - however the three separate ones with no repeat is throwing me off.
My thoughts are to are to either

a) Put all the images on separate frame within 3 MC's, and somehow display a random frame within that clip on load, ensuring no repeat
or

b) Load the images into 3 separate MC's through and XML doc, and pick one at random.

The images only appear one at a time - so I think each MC would only contain one of the 3 random images selected.So is it possible to load a random image into a MC,and then duplicate that MC without a chance of the image repeating?

Here of course it will display a number between 1 and 100 (computerTotal = 100)

What i want is to have a random number between 1 and the half of computerTotal
