May 16, 2010There is an ongoing argument on the web right now about the "openness" of the iPhone OS and Adobe Flash platforms. Adobe's argument is that anyone can build a Flash application without having to worry about being allowed to distribute it.
This made me wonder... is it possible to build and distribute an AIR application without giving any money to Adobe (without violating any licenses, of course)? Are any of these tools free? Are any open-source?

When it comes to web development, I have always used the common PHP/HTML/JavaScript technologies. Now, I want to try something new and develop a RIA using Flex.
Using PHP/HTML/JavaScript, I am able to develop my entire website with free tools. Now, I'm wondering if I am able to do the same thing with a Flex web application?
Is it possible/feasible to develop a Flex web application for free? If not, what would be the lowest cost I would need to spend? And, whatever the option, what are the tools that would be needed?

Dec 10, 2009I'm using Eclipse and I'm wondering what the best Eclipse/Java/Flexbuilder code review tool is. If it matters we're using SVN as our SCM. Here are the following I've come across: Jupiter - seems like it's been around for awhile it looks like there is only a single developer on the project and the documentation mentions rather old versions of Eclipse IBM's Collaborative Code Review plugin for eclipse - seems like its a proprietary code review tool so not sure it will be supported in the future (or have the ability for a community to assist in development). Eclipse COLA real-time shared editing - Not really a code review tool but more a way to view/edit files peer-to-peer style allowing code review like collaboration. Aug 10, 2011I've been searching for the last couple days but can't seem to find a basic example of what I'm looking for. I'm developing a Flex 4.5 app and in it I have a viewstack of 2 components that use some of the same services. Currently the only way I can get the app to correctly use the web services is by defining 2 different web services that use the same PHP web service file. For example: I have an app, and within it I have a viewstack with tab navigation of 2 components: #1) retrieve a list of all Salary Employees, and #2) retrieve a list of all Contractors. Currently to get it working I am defining a UsersTableEmployees webservice within component #1 and a UsersTableContractors webservice within component #2, but they both point to the same PHP class, and only differ in the arugment value I pass to them. Ie, getUsers("employee") and getUsers ("contractors"). Of course this is not best practice.
Searching StackOverflow and Google gives me many results about ColdFusion and MVC (example What's the best way to share data between components in Flex?), but I'm still confused. Can anyone here point me to a basic example (even sample MVC) and source code of an app that uses Zend AMF and allows different components to call common web services?

For example, suppose I have a "notification" template that I want to add to a notifications area every time something new happens. This template includes an icon (Image), text (label), and some space between these two things.

Dragging Components In Flex?
Apr 3, 2010so I am trying to drag around some images in a canvas. I am adding eventlisteners to the components and calling startDrag() and stopDrag() to pick them up and stuff:
component.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, component.startDrag)
The problem is that it is selecting the image at its (0,0) location and not where I initially click on it. So there's a sudden "jump" when I click on the image. It is not smooth.
I noticed that startDrag() has two default parameters, one of them is lockCenter and it is default to false. Maybe do I set it equal to true somehow? (I don't know how to pass arguments to my second parameter in addeventlistener)
Another question: if I want to add more conditions to it, like make a new function that uses component.startDrag(), how do I pass the component to this function while adding event listener to it at the same time? for example: I want to do:

where some_other_function uses component.startDrag();
