Actionscript 3 :: Lined Pattern In Flash Background
May 5, 2010
So i have a flash site i am doing in as2, even if the solution can only be done in as3, I still want it. I am trying to accomplish lines through the background image like on this site [URL] I tried just putting the patten on the image itself, but when i scale my site, its all distorted and the lines does not look as crisp anymore, like theirs do, so I am assuming they did the lines themself in flash...

We are trying to fill our Flex 3 applications background with an image pattern by repeating the pattern throughout the background.
The pattern is a very small "bulleted"-background.
The Flex App seems to just stretch the image pattern even though we've specified in the CSS the following:
Application
{
background-gradient-colors: #ffffff, #ffffff;
color: #000000;

I plan to have the swf fill the browser window, and this should work fine for that. When people click on a button, I want the view to "zoom in" by scaling to 200% and setting the x and y coordinates appropriately.How can I do this with the repeating pattern, because the way I have made it is a series of movieclips. Is there a better way to make it so it is just one movieclip I can control the scale and position of?
ActionScript Code:
tileWallpaper = function () {
tileWidth = 200;

i'm trying to search a string for a particular pattern, and replace it with elements from within the pattern... for example..here's the given string...if you want to learn how to use regexp, {url===http://somesite.com, text===click here}.
the pattern...
{url===http://somesite.com, text===replacement text}
and the intended result...
if you want to learn how to use regexp, click here.
of course, i'll extract the url and do something else with it... i'm just wondering what the regexp is for that pattern, and how i can extract things from the results returned.

ok I have 3 movie clips lined up as buttons. When you rollover one, the others fade out to an alpha of 20.
I also added an arrow that is called when I click on a mc to align it self to the top center of the mc.
My prblem: When I added the arrow I lost my fading. Somewhere in the actions is messing this up.
Here is a fla file. Please help. fla file on next post
I am using Flash MX actionscript I also have Flash MX 2004 but I dont like it.

I've placed an input text box over an image of some lined paper and would like to set a limit for the number of lines that can be typed, as I would like to avoid the text scrolling (I tried the maximum characters option, but it doesn't count spaces, perhaps there is a way to make a space count as a character?). After the user goes beyond this line limit, it would auto-tab to another piece of paper, the auto-tab code's not a biggie, I can code the setFocus, but I'm really struggling to work out how to set a limit on the amount of lines, and the subsequent event that would trigger the auto-tab.

I've been making something using sockets, and I've run into a problem. The outstanding data from the socket is loaded into a string, like so:
[Code]....
To check if a sentence started with PING, I wouldn't be able to, because it will only acknowledge the first line (even though I can append all of it to a text box fine). I also tried testing scenarios with strings containing multiple lines, but found that by making a string equal to multiple lined text, it produces this error:"1094: Syntax error: A string literal must be terminated before the line break.", and I checked, I didn't miss out any speech marks.

I'm looking to get some good books on design patterns and I'm wondering what particular pattern you'd recommend for a Realtime Strategy Game (like Starcraft), MVC?. I'd like to make a basic RTS in Flash at some point and I want to start studying the best pattern for this.

I've been busting my hump the last week or so on this project for my OOP/AS3 course and this past Sunday I realized that my approach wasn't going to work so I scrapped the better part of it and started over.
Our assignment is to create an XML based flash menu that demonstrates an understanding of the OOP patterns we've just learned. It was kind of a 'test the waters' project where he gave us a ton of tutorials and information and told us to make our best attempt at making sense of it so I'm certain there are more efficient ways to do what I'm doing, but that's a moot point.
We need to employ at least two patterns in our menu, though at the moment I'm just focusing on MVC so that I can get the mainUI working before I finalize the second part of the UI. It essentially flows like so:

Is there a way to do this with RegExp maybe? I know that I could just add each variation of each pattern to the array, and just search it, but I want to do it more intelligently.

I have a question I wanted to ask you guys, it's pretty complex because it involved classes and interfaces and can get confusing. I'll try my best to explain it below. I'm still studying OOP designs, so what's the best way to achieve an inventory for a simple flash game? It seems that more than one design pattern could deliver some kind of an inventory but I would lose the flexibility if I try to adapt it somehow without a good knowledge about the subject. For money to buy what is available in an inventory I thought of Singleton. If there's enough cash earned while playing the game, then one can buy new skills. Maybe decorator pattern could list many thumbnails as buttons, and clicking on it applies new features and skills to the character.

I've read some documentation about regular expressions in AS3. I was wondering if it is possible to check every word of a string for a pattern. If all the words satisfy the pattern, the test is passed, otherwise is failed. Here is an example of what I mean:
Code:
var reg:RegExp = /[a-z]/i;
var str1:String = "a b";
var str2:String = "a 1";

I've designed a Flash site in CS3 using Action Script 2.0 that has a main flash movie sorta floating in space over a gradient background. I want the gradient background to re-size with the browser, so I thought that the easiest way to do this would be to delete the gradient background in Flash and instead recreate the background in Dreamweaver using the repeat background option and then make the Flash movie's background transparent. (I hope I'm making some amount of sense here).
I've found a few tutorials on how to do this, but so far I just get a white background instead of transparent. I've tried choosing "Transparent - Windowless" under Window Mode on the HTML tab in Publish Settings. And I've tried selecting the movie from within DW and clicking the parameter button and adding a "wmode" parameter with "transparent" as its value.

I'm trying to make a preloader for a little flash project that involves re-assembling a load of rectangles to make up a pattern.Idea is that instead of the usual load bar i wanted to make use of this pattern that is relevant to the project and have it rebuild it self with these rectangles flying in from the side. So far I have got the tweening sorted using the tween class and staggered the 42 (yes took a little while, probably an easier way so let me know on that also) rectangles using 'setTimeout' so it releases each 100milliseconds after the one one before it. This probably the wrong way to do it but i wanted to check how it looked and this was the one way i knew how to do it.
I want to make it so that these rectangles fly in a complete the pattern once the loading has finished, but on a fast connection I don't want it to rush the animation but for a slow connection I obviously want it to adjust the release time and maybe even the travel speed to compensate.
I had an idea of maybe working out the percentage loaded divided by 42 and then run an if statement to see if that percentage for that segment had been reached before 100millseconds had passed, if 100 had passed then release the rectangle, if not then hold the rectangle until 100 m/s had passed. Not sure if that is the best way to do but that's why I'm looking for some suggestions from more experienced developers.
Code:
import mx.transitions.Tween;
import mx.transitions.easing.Regular;
// declare variables

I can't understand why should I even use the Singleton pattern in ActionScript 3. Can anyone explain me this? Maybe I just don't understand the purpose of it. I mean how it differs from other patterns? How it works? I checked the PureMVC source and it's full of Singletons. Why are they using them in the View, Module, Controller?

I'm working with some Action Script file and I found this:
var pattern:RegExp = /.*//
var results:Array = pattern.exec(cardImageService.url);
I know it's a regular expression and that exec() is looking for my pattern in my string. But how should I understand this pattern?

I would like to create a repeating pattern using a bitmap from my library as a background. I would like the pattern to always fill the stage area when the brower window is scaled. The code below works, but I think it may not be the most efficient way to handle this. Seems to be a little slow.
function onResizeStage(evt:Event):void{
backGroundSprite.graphics.beginBitmapFill(pattern(0, 0));
backGroundSprite.graphics.drawRect(0, 0, stage.stageWidth, stage.stageHeight);
backGroundSprite.graphics.endFill();

I would like my view classes to listen for custom events within my DataManager class. So, for example, when all of my data files are loaded, I would like to have a custom event dispatch.
