Flash :: Cross Platform - Sharing Pro / Builder Projects Between OSX And Windows

Jan 19, 2011

My buddy and I are gearing up for a game jam and we're hoping to use Flash to build our project. One possible problem is that he's got a PC laptop, and I've got a MacBook.

What's the status of cross-platform development in Flash? I'd love to be able to drop something into an SVN repo and pull everything down without regard to the OS, but I'm not convinced that will be very smooth. It seems like I can move around ActionScript source and .fla files without too much issue, but Flash Builder projects seem pretty gnarly, e.g. they appear to have references to them outside of the project folder.

Is there an easy way to migrate project data in such a away that we can develop and debug regardless of OS? Maybe version-controlling all the portable content (.as, .fla, raw assets) and the importing into our respective project environments?

Flex :: Set Up Projects That Reference Common Controls?

Mar 30, 2010

I'm not a flash developer, I'm having issues figuring out how I should set up these two projects that I have in Flex Builder.I've already created projA which has a .mxml that references several custom controls & skins from com.xxx.controls within projA.I now have to build projB which also has a .mxml that will create a different .swf. I want to use some of the same controls from projA.I currently build projA through the command line and nant and will need to do the same for projB.

Should I create a new project to move all of the common controls into? How do I then use this library project in both the projects & compile via command?

IDE :: Sharing Art Across Multiple Files In Flash 8

Feb 17, 2010

I'm using Flash 8, and I hope I word this correctly. How would I set it up so that I can share a single piece of art across multiple files? My goal is to arrange it so that I can edit the art in the original file and automatically update the art in all files linked to it when published? For example, I'm working on a character animation where the character appears in many episodes and the episodes are split into many .fla files. If I needed to change the appearance of the character in all of the episodes which are spread across many .fla files, I would I have to do it manually?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Working With Multiple Projects

Aug 11, 2009

I am working on an educational project where users access multiple interfaces that teach them scientific concepts and I've come to a snag in the best method of developing these interfaces. As they were developed in the last module the format looked like this. Each interface was a separate swf file that contained all needed code, graphics, and a set of fake data for whatever the interface needed. Each revision of the interface is compiled and displayed through meetings or emails where the actual swf file is sent, we do not have a test server nor do we have access to the internet in the rooms where reviews happen. Currently after the final look and interaction is approved all calls to the fake data are modified to either make database calls themselves, or call functions from it's containing swf file once it is loaded.[code]Obviously I haven't gotten it to work but I'm thinking something along those lines. Any suggestions on a method to do this the best. Ultimately I would like to be able to do this for embedding assets as well. For example a font, currently I load fonts from an external file, which means each FLA needs a copy of that font file and at completion all files load the same text file.

Java :: Can Maven Projects Have Multiple Parents

Oct 28, 2009

we have java and flex projects at work. We currently have 1 base pom that contains the configurations we want to use for both projects. Problem with this is: flex projects inherit configuration for javadoc and pmd for example, which they do not want.

I want to do this a bit more clean and have a real base-pom and then a java-base-pom and a flex-base-pom. But how does this work in a multimodule that has both a flex part and a java part?

We have plugins to our own application where we use the following structure:

my-plugin
my-plugin-client (flex)
my-plugin-server (java)

The my-plugin just contains a pom.xml with section. I would use the my-plugin pom.xml as a parent to both, but then I cannot also use the java base-pom or the flex base-pom also as parent.

IDE :: Using Runtime Sharing Of Multiple SWFs?

Nov 1, 2011

I'm currently planning out the UI for a game with a complex UI system. I have done some runtime sharing tests using fonts that are setup for sharing in one fla, and I've setup the import in another. Both files are exported as swc files and are included in the flash develop project (the font is included completely). This worked fine. What I would like to do is have my UI loaded on-demand. I was planning to have a general UI elements library that contains elements setup for sharing (similar to the font), then have separate swfs that are loaded into the main swf when they are needed. These separate swfs would use elements from the shared library. I can get this to work exclusively in the IDE, or exclusively on the server, but not both (making development awkward).

The big stumbling block I'm hitting is to do with setting up the URL paths.I think that all of the runtime paths will be based on the running 'Main' swf location. So all import/export paths need to use paths that work from this root location.for example 'data/ui/top_ui.swf' might import objects from 'ui_elements.swf' (effectively 'data/ui/ui_elements.swf'). This import will function fine when testing from the IDE, but when running on the server, this will fail as it will try to load 'ui_elements.swf' from the root folder. Worse still, it will not fire an error (as it has found 'top_ui.swf' fine) but the load will never complete as it cannot find the runtime swf.

The reason for this folder structure is that we would really prefer to keep our assets in a folder that could in theory be re-located to another server (should the bandwidth usage dictate it). To put these ui swfs in their own folder then causes all the linkage to break in the Flash IDE making editing a kludge. Fix it in the IDE and it will no longer function on load.At the moment it looks like we will just have to export swc files and embed the lot in the main swf to keep this easy for code and art.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Sharing SharedObjects Between Multiple .swfs?

Jun 2, 2011

I have a project that I think may be more manageable if I break it up into multiple small .swf files rather than having a gargantuan mega .swf.Now, I know that I could use a root .swf and load data from the others, but I think that it'll be a lot easier to debug and update if I'm using separate self-contained .swfs, so this is the direction I'm currently investigating.

However, the .swfs won't really work unless I can have user-data persist between them, so I'm wondering if I can load a SharedObject saved by another .swf file? Are there any important caveats that I need to be aware of?In particular, can anyone give me sample code that would allow me to do this with both an online and offline copy of the files; i.e - if I run the same set of .swfs from haravikk.com, and locally, I want them to still be able to share data with one-another. In this case though I won't need to worry about sharing data between a local copy and [url]..., just so long as the files themselves can pass data within whatever domain they're loaded it should be fine.

Flex :: Structure Multiple Cairngorm MVC Projects That Share Several Components?

Jun 5, 2009

I recently completed a project for a custom report UI in Flex. Now, I've been tasked with creating a new application that is essentially a "lite" version of the original UI. It will include only a few of the options that are in the original application. Also, it needs to be a separate application.

I do not want to duplicate my code, so I am planning on moving a bunch of the classes from the original application to a new library that can be shared by both applications. However, I'm trying to figure out how to make this work in my MVC environment.

For example, I have an Accordion component that lets users filter several items. Each Accordion child is an instance of a custom component with two lists (one for entities available for selection, the other for the entities the user has selected). Each child component has properties bound to the Model and functions that call Cairngorm Events.[code]...

ActionScript 3.0 :: Can't Link To Any Classpaths?

Feb 5, 2010

I installed CS4 on a mac and cannot seem to get any class to load. I made an fla file and put "Main" in the class in the properties tab. I made a class called "Main" in the same folder. When I hit the pencil I get an error that says "a definition for the document class could not be found in the classpath, so one will be automatically generated in the SWF."In the publish settings for the fla I have "." under Source Path. I have even added the path of where the Main.as file is but I still get the same error.

I brought in a project I was working on another computer... When I open that .fla, I can hit the pencil and it brings up my Main.as document, which resides in the same folder. However, I can't compile because it is using classes from my extended library. I put the extended library classes in a folder and added them with the browser folder under publish settings ->advanced actionscript 3.0 settings->external library path but. However, the compiler will not find the class. I put the same path into the .fla's publish settings but no dice

Professional :: Multiple Fla Projects - When Loading Main Swf File 3 Other Swf Files Are Also Loaded

May 31, 2011

I am new flash developer, and inherited a project which has 4 fla project files. When it runs inside a browser, it appears "window" which occupies whole browser. This project is write in Flash CS3. I have few questions:

1). When loading main swf file, 3 other swf files are also loaded. These swf files are communicating with each other through message. When debug the mail swf with CS3, I can set breakpoint and the program can stop only at limited AS files. My questions is how to debug other AS files in other swf file?

2) I used CS5. It seems that I can stop at more AS files, which does not belong to main swf file. Why?

My questions is should I use CS5, which might makes debugging easier? Is it right direction to go to debug multiple swf? (For CS5, I need to fix some code in order to make the program fully working as CS3)

3) What's best tool to use for such project since CS3 is very old. Should I use Flash builder, Flex. Amethyst?

Flash - How Should One Logically Organize Rhythm / Timing

Jan 15, 2012

I'm working on a rhythm-based game set to a specific song in ActionScript, in which a trigger spawns on the right side of the screen and moves left. The player must hit the trigger when it touches the left side of the screen, and I'm trying to figure out the most code-efficient way to spawn triggers in sync with the timing of the song. The only thing that came immediately to mind was an update function tied to the main loop that checks if the song is at a certain second each frame, but that seems unnecessary.

Flash :: Ide - CS5 Projects Panel Totally Gone?

So, I popped open up Flash CS5 just now, and I couldn't find my projects panel. I was working on a dual screen set up previously, so my windows were everywhere anyways (sans external). I switched over to a smaller screen workspace, and popped opened the projects panel. Oddly enough, the code snippets panel came up instead. So, I switched off the code snippets, and tried again. I've been trying different ways of opening this panel for about 15 minutes, and I'm totally stumped. Some thorough googling didn't present any relevant results, so, StackOverflow, I turn to you. Is this a known issue? is there a secret backdoor way to open this panel?

Automating Creation Of Flash / AS3 Projects

Jul 11, 2011

My goal is to make a flash/as3 program that would pull multiple sets of data (images and texts) from the database and compile and save a flash video project for each one. What might be the best way to go about making this work? I checked but wasn't able to find a function that would publish the flash project in it's current state, so I don't think I can execute the entire process in a single flash/as3 file. My only other option is to have some other program/batch file take care of the querying the database and compiling multiple flash/as3 movies by starting up a flash program and passing it the parameters of the data it needs to build 1 complete project for 1 set of data. Is there a program to create .swf files automatically? Is it even possible to pass in init params to flash/as3 project?

I have an issue with an apparent bug in Flash Pro CS5.5. I have recently upgraded to CS5.5 Master Collection from my previous version of 4.0. The bug is when I create a fonts FLA file with fonts embedded in it that I want to use throughout an entire site. I correctly configure those fonts as export for runtime sharing.

In any other FLAs in which I wish to use the shared fonts, I either (a) drag the assets from one library to the other, or (b) add them to the new fla and configure them as import for runtime sharing (both of which achieve the same result).
