Flash :: Create Object From Class By String Value?
Nov 17, 2011Is it possible to create an object from a class with a dynamic name? I have the name of the class in a string, but I want to create an instance of that class.

I'm new to Flash AS3. I started making a game and I am a bit confused. Let's assume that I want to create a game that has multiple levels/modes, how can I do this in an object orientated way?
When i create games in other languages e.g. XNA C#, i create a separate class then create an object of that class within the main class and run the game based on a simple statement.

How can I create a dynamic object from a string? Here is my current code with incorrect results:

I would like the previous code to output the following:

How do I create a class that extends the String class?
Lets say I've created an 'exString' class that extends String.
In my project file I do the following
Code:
var test:exString = new exString();
test = "Hello World";
text.someExStringFunction();
I get a type mismatch in my "Hello World" assignment because Flash sees it as a String and not as an exString.
Is there anyway to create an object with a string?
For example : var myClassString:String = "myClass"; // myClass is my real class
then create an object with something like : var myObject object = new myClassString(); // I need to create the object from the string ...

In as simple an example as I can think of, I have two classes: Dog and Cat. Both are subclasses of Animal, in this stupid example... I know how to create instances of both, however I don't know how to dynamically create them by name from a string. It would be something like...

I'm trying to create a quick access to a object with a String as it's key, so I wrote:
"var map:Object = {};
map["key1"] = object1;
map["key2"] = object2;
..."
Is there any difference about the performance between long key and short key(the length of the String used as a key)? If the key contains many charactors, will it slow down when accessing that object?
I'm tring to create instance of class, when I got name of this class.I think better to explain my problem will be this code:[code]I invoke some Function, and I get error: [Fault] exception, information=ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable Level0Img was not defined.
View 2 RepliesI'm creating a CMS(Content Management System) tool so that users can change text and the changes be reflected in a text window in flash . The text that the user enters in the CMS tool will be stored in the database.
In flash I want to parse the string that I get from the database and look for URL strings that start with http "http://www.someurl.com" and parse out that substring.
For example the string could be "Please vist my site at http://www.site.com". I would want to parse out the http://www.site.com
If I find this url string I want to pre-pend the a href tag <a> and append the closing </a> tag to the string so that this link will be clickable from the textfield.
Does flash have an object that deals with Regular Expressions? I've looked at the String object in flash but not sure how to achieve this task

View 2 RepliesI have written a Class for skinning the UI. The Class works by taking a movie clip name from the stage passed to it and create the skin for it.So I create an Object from the class such as this:
Code:
var CBox:UI = new UI();
Now what I wanted to do is reference a movie clip from the stage to this CBox variable, so when a call the Class methods it will know which movie clip to work on! Since currently I have to do this:
Code:
CBox.Skinning(content_mc, "content", 100, 200);
or
CBox.Over(content_mc);
As you can see Im passing the movie clip, content_mc, everytime. I just want to avoid this by creating a reference.
I have a movie clip in my library with a class name "MyClass", and I am trying to do something like this:
ActionScript Code:
function createbtn(bclass:Class):void{
var addB:bclass = new bclass();
addChild(addB);
}
creatbtn(MyClass);
But i get the "1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: bclass." Error.
googled it and hardly found any answer(seriously)need a quick solution for this:- How to create object from class that extends MovieClipSay i have a class name MC
Code:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
[code].....
I've read through the Sticky in ActionScript 3.0 forum and looked through other threads in the topic but maybe I'm not using the right search terms. My problem is creating a new object in the constructor method, I've created a package "com.weenz.shutters" and created many class files within that package. The compiler is giving me the following 2 errors for the "Window.as" file[code]...

I've looked at many other examples using NetConnection and they don't import anything relating to NetConnection. Is there something in the Flash settings that I need to set in order to get this working?
View 9 RepliesI would like to create a XML object and after this send it via XMLSocket class. The XML must have a special form:
Code: Select all<?xml version="1.0"?><Colour xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" Value="red"/>
Exactly this doesn't work but is there a way to do it?
Code:
for ( var i = 0; i < 10; i++ )
{
var ["object"+i]:MyClass = new MyClass();
// would create object1, object2, object 3, object 4, ...
}
I've been playing around with custom classes. My objective was to create a custom class (Testing) that would create a box when an instance of the class is created. I've tried three different approaches, however only (3) seems to be showing up. I'm just curious why (1) or (2) doesn't work?
Also is there a better approach than (3)? Since at the moment it's been created on _root. I hope the box can only be accessible through the instance. Since I'd like to incorporate the whole idea of public, private, encapsulation, etc.

I'm trying to create a boundary for a player object, controlled with arrow keys, in my game using the main stage's height and width. For example, one test point is at the top edge of the player object's bounding box so that when the player object's head touches the stage's top edge, the player can't move anymore to the north. The player object is manually instantiated to the center of the stage by using the Flash stage editor so it will start at the center before the program starts.The problem is that right at the start of the program, I can no longer move the player object up or down with the arrow keys but I can still move it left or right. The intention is to allow the player to move north until the player object's head touches the top edge of the main stage.[code]
View 1 RepliesIf I have three classes:
public class Example {
public function Example () {
}[code]............
You can see that the two last classes extend the first one, and both have the 'variable' property. In case that I have an instance of Example and I am sure it is also an ExtendedExample OR AnotherExtendedExample instance, is there some way to access the 'variable' property? Something like
function functionThatReceivesAnExtendedExample (ex:Example):void {
if(some condition that I may need) {
ex.func()
Using Flash CS5 Professional I have created a symbol, dragged it onto the stage, and given it an instance name of GreenLight1. If I want to make this visible from the document class, I can simply do the GreenLight1.visible=true; and poof it's good to go when I test the file. As long as I stay in the document class I am good to go, but now I'm trying to move to another class and hitting ALL kinds of trouble just trying to get Flash to allow me to access this simple object. All I am looking to do is have this GreenLight1 go invisible (visible=false) when a certain condition occurs in this new class and Flash just won't let me access GreenLight1 at all. Things I've tried thus far:
stage is passed to the class and is referenced by _stage and is working just fine when I do _stage.addchild or anything like that. So I have tried "_stage.GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property GreenLight1 not found on flash.display.Stage and there is no default value." My document class extends Sprite, so I figured I'd try the root function. So I tried "Sprite(root).GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "1119: Access of possibly undefined property GreenLight1 through a reference with static type flash.display:Sprite." I tried to create the Resource class as described therein. To which I came across the same problem that I started with in that it doesn't know what GreenLight1 is to begin with so I got "1120: Access of undefined property GreenLight1." Here is my code for Resource.as (am I supposed to pass something to this class from the document class?)

How can i cast a object to another type? in AS3 i tried putting (objectType) infront of the variable but it doesnt work, below i have added objects of fishes into the child, and i am getting the fishes back out when mouse down is triggered, and then calling the fishes what to do. however i cant call the method of the custom class fish because it is a displayobject.[code]...

I think I am on the right track here but if someone could help that would be great. I have a piece of code that loops ON_ENTER_FRAME and it is used to check if a pistolBullet is hitting a barrel.
The problem I have is that I can check for collision of a barrel, if I manually type the name 'barrel', 'barrel2' etc within this code:

If I load an SWF with a query string at the end, like:
object.swf?this=that
then "this" is properly recognized as a flashvar within the flash object.But, if I set "this" via mod_rewrite, as in:
RewriteRule ^object$ lib/object.swf?this=that [QSA,NC,L]
then "this" is undefined.I even wrote a little PHP script to dump the contents of $_GET (changed the rewrite target temporarily), and I'm positive that the rewrite rule is working.
mod_rewrite clarification:
To demonstrate the strangeness of the problem, let me temporarily change the rewrite target to "object.php", so the rule now reads:
RewriteRule ^object$ lib/object.php?this=that [QSA,NC,L]
I created object.php in the /lib/ directory with the following line:
<?php echo '<pre>'.print_r($_GET, true).'</pre>'; ?>
Then, when I navigate to /object, I get the following output:
Array
(
[this] => that
)
This demonstrates that the rewrite rule is working as expected.Still, when I change the rewrite target back to the SWF, "this" is not recognized as a flashvar.(I'd definitely check the rewrite log to make sure, but I don't think I have access to it on the Media Temple server I'm using.)
