Flash :: What Is The Difference Between Calling ExampleFunction() And ExampleFunction.call()
Jan 27, 2012
What is the difference between calling exampleFunction() and exampleFunction.call() ?
There is a feature on Actionscript that allows you to use functions through the 'call' method. For example, to use the 'test' function below, I could write test() and test.call()
function test():void {
trace('function was called')
}
What is the difference?

Assuming calling the same ColdFusion web service and all other factors are identical, is there a difference in performance/speed between using the following two tags?
<s:RemoteObject id="MyService" destination="ColdFusion" source="MyWSFolder.MyService"/>
and
<s:WebService id="MyService" wsdl="http://www.myDomain.com/MyWSFolder/MyService.cfc?wsdl"/>

So I have an AS3 audio player which receives commands from Javascript.I have a function in the flash file called 'set_song', which sets the URL for the song to be played. The first time I call it using something like
Code:
document.getElementById('audio_player').set_song(response.url);
(response.url being the URL response from an AJAX call) it works fine and all the other functions on the player work fine but if I then run the same function a second time I get the "Error calling method on NPObject!" error in Firebug. I googled this and it said it was something to do with permissions but;
The site is at dftba[dot]com
The flash file is at dftba[dot]com
The javascript files are at [1/4][dot]cdns[dot]dftba[dot]com
The audio files are at vox[dot]dftba[dot]com
And I have
Code:
Security.allowDomain("dftba[dot]com");
Security.allowDomain("www[dot]dftba[dot]com");
Security.allowDomain("new[dot]dftba[dot]com");
[code]...

I need to get a javascript var in my Flash application. I like to be able to just set a variable in the javascript (client constraints) rather than define a function.
Can this be done? I am trying to use the ExternalInterface.call()
AS:
ExternalInterface.call("function(){return window.someVar}", null);
JS:
var someVar = "Test";
This does not work and I suspect it is because the ExternalInterface.call() does not like the anonymous function.

I have a function defined in JavaScript like so:
function fadeBack() {
alert("fadeBack called");
};
I call that function from my Flash file like so:
import flash.external.*;
flash.external.ExternalInterface.call("fadeBack");
This works in both Safari and Chrome, but for some reason Firefox won't ever call the function. Still, I can't figure this out. How can I fix it?

i have some actionscript that makes a
ExternalInterface.call('someFunction');
call.is it possible to reference the html object that made the call to someFunction directly using the ExternalInterface.call call?
Assume that the object that makes the call also has some Callbacks (via ExternalInterface.addCallback) that are accessible via javascript.
Currently:
Actionscript source
ExternalInterface.call("someFunction");
ExternalInterface.addCallback("someCallback",someASfunction);

We have been given some code that does a URLRequest call which is really slow to respond, so I was looking to make it pull the data from the page, as it is already on the page.[code]I have tried to replace it with this (actionscript is definitely not my forte):[code]I am using addCallBack as that is what the editor suggested via autocomplete, unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. Unfortunately I cannot go back to the developer at this time.The error message is:Call to a possibly undefined method addCallback through a reference with static type flash.external:ExternalInterface

I was wondering, because people do suggest this, but i've never explicitly had it verified:does the flash cs4 compiler actually generate a SWF file, that is more optimized and faster, than the flash cs3 compiler?and what about other compilers? custom as3 compilers, are there faster ones?I don't mean the time it takes to compile the .fla, but the speed of the SWF file.
