Flex :: AIR Application Written Using Singletons Needs To Spawn Multiple Instances Of App?

Dec 14, 2011

I have an AIR application that uses Singletons to manage global state throughout the application. Works great for what it does (manages a network appliance). But now the client wants to spawn multiple application instances from the first instance so they can manage multiple hardware devices at the same time ... kind of like a dashboard but lots bigger.

As you can guess, I coded myself into a corner with the singletons so if I refactor the application to have a bootstrap class that launches the application logic with a button, let's say, that spawns another window that contains the same application logic, then the singletons are shared across both app windows whereas I would have liked two separate instances.

Is there a way to use singletons ( or something else ) to keep global state but create multiple instances in one application where each instance needs it's own state manager?

Flash :: Check Web Application Status Written In Flex?

Jan 18, 2010

I have a typical web application that communicates in the following way: SWF file makes service calls to Java services (Remote object, over BlazeDS on Tomcat), which in turn communicates to database.

How do I implement a status check service (hosted on another domain) that will check if the ENTIRE app is up and running? Ideally, I'd make checker SWF that would load App SWF and called its function that would return something from the database (a naive service would count rows in table and hash it with MD5), but security constrains won't let me call loaded SWF's function.

Checking the java services only is not enough, as I am not checking the status of the SWF.

Flex :: Multiple Instances Of A TitleWindow Opened

Sep 27, 2011

My Flex application is one consisting of several "subapps". Basically, the main application area is an ApplicationControlBar with buttons for each of the subapps. The rest of the area is a canvas where the subapps are displayed.Only one subapp is visible at a time. When switching between subapps, we do a canvas.removeAllChildren(), then canvas.addChild(subAppSwitchedTo).It's essentially a manual implementation of a ViewStack (the pros and cons of which are not the topic of this, so refrain from commenting on this).In one of my subapps (let's say subapp "A"), I have a search function where results are displayed in a TitleWindow that gets popped up. Workflow is like enter search criteria, click search button, TitleWindow pops up with results (multiple selection datagrid), choose desired result(s), click OK, popup goes away (PopUpManager.removePopUp), and continue working. This all works fine. The problem is if I switch to a different subapp (say "B" -- where A gets removeAllChildren()'d and B gets added), then switch back to A and search again, when the results TitleWindow pops open, there will be TWO stacked on top of each other. If I continue to navigate away and back to A, every time I search, there will be an additional popup in the "stack" of popups (one for each time A gets addChild()'d).

I'm not sure what to do about it and it's causing a serious usability bug in my application.It's like I somehow need to flush the PopUpManager or something (even though I'm correctly calling removePopUp() to remove the TitleWindow).[code]

Flex :: Control Multiple Instances Of Movieclips In A Loaded Swf At Once?

Mar 2, 2011

I am loading an swf created in flash professional cs5 via the loader class into a flex 4.1 application. The flash file contains multiple movieclips that are exported for actionscript and those movieclips exist in many instances throughout the movie.

Iterating through everything, comparing class types seems to be the most easy but also the most redundant way to solve this. Is there any way of using the class name as a kind of global selector to access the clips?

I could also make the sub-clips in the flash listen for an event on which they perform an action, but I am not really sure what might be best.

Should I have multiple instances of the applications running on the same server/ deploying the application in diff servers and using a load balancer for routing? If i must have multiple instances, how to do that? On a given day, the application is expected to get around 2000-3000 hits. What are all the factors to be kept in mind while deployment?

Flex :: 4 - Multiple Instances Of A Custom Component Listening The Same Event Of A Parent

Jan 28, 2011

In short: I need an event listener in a custom component so all its instances (without editing them) react at the same time, fired by a dispatched event in its parent container. In detail: I have a custom component with Tab navigator. (The tabs are intended to show different preferences for different Languages.) I have a button bar with buttons for all the languages. There are a lot of instances of the custom component.

I want to click in a button of the languages bar and get ALL the instances switched to the same tab (the custom component contains the logic to change the tab). I can do it by adding the event listener for EACH INSTANCE of the custom component, so it calls an internal function that changes the tab. But it seems to be very coupled, isn't it? I wonder if it can be done in the master CLASS of the component, so it listen for events in its parent container, whichever it is. In my mind this code shoud work, but it doesn't (obviously ill'use a custom event to pass the new language value): this.parent.addEventListener("lang_change", this.change_tab); This way I can just drop an instance of the component, and see it working for itself.

Flex :: Load Multiple Modules In One Application?

Sep 1, 2010

I don't know if I can do what I want in flex, so imagine this in ASP: I have an aspx page that loads a Login.ascx control, the control checks if login is correct, and if so the aspx page loads the XXX.ascx control (so there is only one control visible).

I want to do more or less the same in Flex: I have the main application with the code that connects to the database, check the login, and if its correct it loads a new module. I have made everything until the module load, I mean, I have the main application (Login.mxml) associated to a Login.as, and a Module.mxml associated to a Module.as. When the user press the login button (in Login.mxml), a method is fired and checks the login. If it is correct, it shows the new module.

My problem is that it is shown in the same page that the login page, instead of "changing" the page. I have used two ways to do that: ModuleLoader and PopUpManager, and both load the new module in the same page.

QUESTION: How can I load, inside an application, a Flex module in a different page?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Multiple Scenes With Multiple Instances Of The Same Slide Show

Sep 8, 2009

Ok so here is my XML slideshow Actionscript:

ActionScript Code:
stop();
var xmlRequest:URLRequest= new URLRequest("graphicImages.xml");
var xmlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(xmlRequest);

[Code]....

So I figured that the coding of separate scenes would work independently of one another, but I guess I was dead wrong, because when I apply this to a different scene and change the XML path for a different set of images, I get all sorts of conflict errors when I test the entire movie. I have my flash film set up so that each link send the user to a different scene, which plays a unique intro for each, and then the slideshow appears on screen and the viewer can navigate the images.

Is there a work around for this? Or am I going to have to break my flash movie into separate movies? Or should I just add a suffix to all my vars and functions so that they are unique for each scene?

Flash :: Compile A Swc With A Class Written In Flex

Jun 17, 2009

I want to use some assets ( buttons, etc. ) I'm creating in flash in a flex actionscript project. Since all my assets are bellow 10K, I'm not planning to load a swf ,wait until it's loaded and create the interface. I want to use a swc and just instance the clips I need. Also, I want my Button class to have some extra properties, and this is where the problem occurs.

If in the Linkage Properties in the Flash IDE I add a reference to a custom Button Class and trace a child of the Button MovieClip, I get the right trace. If then I create a Button, in the Main class in Flex, using the generated swc file and trace the same child of the Button MovieClip, I get null. Why is that ? Is there anyway to get around this ? I've considered using the Flex Component Kit, but since I'm working on a simple actionscript project and I'm not using the Flex framework, I see no point in using the Component Kit at this point.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Static Initialization And Autonomous Singletons?

Sep 16, 2010

I work mainly in C++, and at work we use this awesome autonomous singleton pattern where you automatically add statically instantiated classes to some global list. If you're familiar with c++, imagine something ala:

class CuteSingleton : public ISomeInterface
{
*** stuff ***[code]...

So basically, CuteSingleton is instantiated at DLL load time and added to a global list of ISomeInterface interfaces. This is really powerful because it lets us rapidly prototype tons of code without polluting our existing codebase by having to include these prototype files, instantiating classes like CuteSingleton in a big initializer list somewhere, etc.I've been trying to figure out how to do something similar in actionscript for a few days now and I'm coming up empty handed. All I want to do is have this code instantiate this class without having to reference it in some other files:

package EntitySystem
{
public class EntityManager extends AutoGameSystem [code].............

Media Server :: VideoPlayer And Application Instances

Jun 27, 2010

I am trying to playback recorded streams from a Flash Media Interactive Server using the VideoPlayer component in Flex 4/Flash Builder 4.If the stream is located in the serverpath>/ streams/vod/_definst_ directory then I can get to it by setting the 'source' parameter of the VideoPlayer to [code]What I can't get to work is when I have a stream recorded to an instance within an application directory.So if the application is "app1' and the instance name is "inst1" it would be literally located in <serverpath>/ app1/ streams/ inst1 directory. Setting the source parameter to this "<server>/ app1/ inst1/ streamname" does not work.It seams to be ignoring the 'inst1' part of the path because the server side log shows '_definst_' as the instance name being run.I know this is in part a Flex 4 question, but manually writing a video player works. I would just like to get the Flex 4 VideoPlayer component to play the video.
