Apr 15, 2009I've found several examples and documentation that show how to read and write files on the system, but all show user intervention or reading/writing files in user profile directories. There are a few things I want to do:
Monitor system and other application log files for changes, then automatically load those files when changes occur Reload a previously open file when the application launches Write files into a log directory, which probably will not exist in the same path as the application.
In my very quick search, it seems that there may be a security model that constrains an AIR application's access to the file system, so that files can only be read or written to directories selected by the user with the file system dialog OR files can be written within the user profile or air application directory.
Does an Adobe Air application have unconstrained access to the file system?

Sep 16, 2009Does anyone know if adobe flash player cache data is available to other users on a system? For example: A user logs onto Windows XP, then uses my adobe flex application... and in the process of doing so downloads the signed flex lib... He then decides to mow the lawn and log off. At about 3pm the same day, his Mum can't hear the TV over the sound of the mower, so she decides to log in using a different XP user account. She proceeds to use the very same flex application. Does she also need to download the flex lib again, or would the data already be cached in the flash player?

Unfortunately, the KeyboardEvent is not caught when running the app under IE since it is conflicting with the IE native shortcut (closing the active tab). Jan 1, 2010I've written a little video game in Flex that runs in a browser. The player moves by pushing the arrow buttons on the keyboard, so I need to capture those keystrokes. In fact, the game action starts when the player presses one of those keys.In order to capture the keystrokes, the Flash/Flex application, not just the browser, needs to have the focus.How can I ensure that the application has the focus? I've implemented a bit of a hack: A "Begin" button you must click to start the game. The only point of this button is to ensure that the app has the focus.

Jun 30, 2011I'm working on an AIR app that will have a free basic version and a more advanced paid version that's unlocked with a license key. Ideally once a license key is entered I'd like it to unlock the application for all users of the computer. However, I haven't been able to find a suitable system-wide location for storing the license key file. All of the preconfigured locations in the File class (e.g. File.applicationStorageDirectory) are either user-specific or read-only.
Is there a standard system-wide location in AIR where I can store things like this? If not the file system, maybe shared objects, or SQLite, or the encrypted local store? Failing that, are there standard locations on each system (Windows, Mac, Linux) that I could hardcode that are guaranteed to be writable by all users? The last option is made more difficult by the lack of access to any environment variables.
If all else fails I guess I could just require the application to be unlocked per-user, but that doesn't sound like a recipe for happy customers ("What do you mean I have to buy it twice for my wife to use it? We only have one computer!"). (Okay, yes, it it's per-user I'll probably let one key unlock the app 3 or 4 times to be nice about it, but it's still less convenient for the user to activate multiple times).

Oct 18, 2011I'm building an Adobe AIR desktop app with Flash CS5 that makes a lot of use of bitmapdata, bytearrays and base64 strings. After a while the memory usage of the app doubles. Is it recommended to use system.gc() to free memory at that point or is that bad practice?

Flex :: Capturing Key Events In A Mx:Image?
May 6, 2010I'm trying to capture key events in a mx:Image and I can't get it to work.

When I press a key when the mouse is over the image I expect the label text to change to "Something", but nothing happens. I've done all sorts of combination of enabled and putting the keyDown on the canvas and the label as well.
Actionscript 3 :: ALT Capturing In Flex Apps (yet Again)?
Jan 6, 2011I know there have been similar threads in the past but I can't seem to find a decent definitive answer / workaround for the problem I'm facing.What I'm trying to do: capture ALT+SHIFT+something keyboard events. Pretty straightforward, right?
Issue: When pressing ALT+SHIFT doesn't seem to ever shoot an event. The only combination that seems to work with ALT is CTRL+ALT +something, as pointed out here.
Question: I've read that the browser catches some of the keyboard events, but this happens with the basic flash player too - maybe that catches events too? Would love to know if there is a solution that doesn't involve messing with JS.

Nov 23, 2011I am looking for a solution in Flex where I can capture a combination of keyboard inputs such as: [CTRL] + A + B
That is, pressing the CTRL key and the user presses two keys (instead of the usual one).
I can capture the event when somebody keys: [CTRL] + A with the following code:

How would I capture an additional key so that the event is captured when somebody presses CTRL, A and B?
