How do i open file and get its content as a ByteArray in AS3. I saw examples, using FileStream & File classes from flex.filesystem, but the doc says it's for AIR only.

how to convert a file I have on my server (pdf/excel/ppt) to a ByteArray. The reason I want to do this is to display the dialogue open/save as to the user and I must set the Content-Type to octet-stream. The dialogue shows fine with just navigateToURL() but for pdf's it is the user's local browser setting. For a URLRequest I must set the data as a ByteArray. I'm trying to use the code located here:

I have an Air application with remote service in codeigniter.I'm trying to save a bytearray that I received from the Air app but when I save the data I get empty files with the correct filename.So there must be something wrong with my bytearray or the way I save the data.Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?I've debugged the Arraycollection I sent and the bytearray is definitely in there.

I want to open a pdf/excel/doc using flex, as all know we can use navigateToUrl(URL) method to open a file from the server. But my problem is those files are encrypted in the server, so I load the files as follows

ByteLoader.dataFormat = URLLoaderDataFormat.BINARY;
ByteLoader.load(new URLRequest (constructedURL));
so that I can manipulate them and can get the decrypted file. Now my question is, my data already got downloaded from the server, so how will I launch the files(pdf/doc/excel) with the binary content which I had got?
Is there anyway i can launch those files like we do it in navigateToURL()?

When I run the above code the output suggests that every character in the string returned by toString contains one byte from the ByteArray. This is of course great if you want to display the content of the ByteArray, but not so great if you want to send its content encoded in a string and the size of the string matters.Is it possible to get a string from the ByteArray where every character in the string contains two bytes from the ByteArray?

I'm currently writing a csv file straight off, which opens well in OpenOffice or Numbers, but not in Excel. The problem is with the Swedish characters, which turn up as other characters when opening in Excel. Converting (in Notepad++) the csv-file to ANSI encoding makes the show up correctly in Excel.
Is there any way to write ANSI-encoded files straight from Flex?
Any other options for writing a file that can be opened in Excel and OpenOffice?

What is the best way to open and parse and excell file from a Flex Application built using Adobe Flash Builder 4.5. I have done tons of research, most lead me to external libraries, I could deal with that if that is the best approach, but prefer a built in method.
View 3 RepliesI have an application on Google App Engine that is made of Adobe Flex [and Java] components. The app has buttons to do tasks related to the app, including an "Open" button, which allows the user to open a .XML file, which then gets converted into data/content that's displayed in the app GUI. Then I press the "Run" button and it calculates stuff related to the inputted data/content. Also, my datastore is setup using JDO. I'm using only GAE. I'm NOT using GWT.
Based on the nature of the calculations (algorithms) I'm running, I would benefit from being able to open an XML file and then click the Run button on my app simultaneously on lets say 5 different versions of my app that I have uploaded to app engine. The 5 versions would be identical.Is there a way to create, say, an HTML page where the user would provide a link to the XML file (or open/load it from their disk) to be processed, then press "Go," where then the XML file is passed to all 5 versions of my app, then "automatically presses the Run button" on each?I can do this manually at the moment by going to each version-specific URL for my app, but it takes too long. Do you have any suggestions for how I would go about setting up such a script?
EDIT: Motivation for the problem: It's not XML processing time that I'm worried about. I currently have 2 algorithms that compute the number of particular types of "special points" that exist in an inputted XML file which contains large amounts of data. The difference between the two algorithms is that the 1st searches until it finds every special point. Then it stops. The 2nd searches and stops when it finds the first special point it comes across. Using multiple instances of this 2nd algorithm, one has the potential of finding all the points faster than the 1st algorithm.
I am creating some application in flex and one of my purposes is to read content of file and display it in flex. There is huge problem, when I have file written in polish (which contains some special characters) because amfphp transfers this contents few seconds, which is to long (reading and sending content of file without any polish character if fast).My php code reads any files fast, so problem is on amfphp side. Is there any solution or I have to go with HTTPService and load contents of file directly from flex?

View 7 RepliesIf I am making a simple navigation menu bar for a flash site in AS2 with mouse over/rollOut effects, then what is some possiblr actionscript I can use per menu item in order to have tHAT particular menu item selected while it's active ( in other words, if I click on services and I am located on the services page, the services object form the menu would be highlighted and if I were to click on that 'Active/highlighted" menu object, no event would occur. but it would simply remain highlighted until the point that I click on a different menu object and that highlight effect on previous menu object would fade out.
View 3 RepliesI m trying to write AS3 to take a screenshot of a MC thats on the stage and pass the data to a .cfc method which saves it as a jpg on the server.The current code I have kind of works except the jpg is unreadable.I think it has something to do with not using Flex, AMF, and writing binary files.When I look at the jpg via a hex viewer I think it doesnt have the right jpg header.The jpg begins with:c3 bf c3 98 c3 bf c3 a0 00 10 4a 46. I need to write a ByteArray to a file on local disk with Flash AS3. The flashapplication is run locally (it's a projector exe).
I found the FileReference class with the save() function which works perfect. The only problem is, that this function opens a filebrowser and let's the user select where to store the file. However - i have the path already as string and need to save to this location without useraction (since i'm exporting a lot of files into this directory in one go and don't want the user to choose each one manually).
Is there a way to store a bytearray from a projector to local disk without opening a filebrowser?
I'm also using mdm Zinc, which actually provides a function to save a ByteArray to disk, but this function is for some unknown reasons not working. I already filed a bugreport, but I need to get this to work very urgently, so i'm looking for alternatives!
I read limited (small - 15 - 500 mb files). I need to be able to put all file bytes into one single bytearray. So I have a function:

But it does not work=( - gives me Error: Error #2030: End of file was encountered.
How to get a full bytearray from stream to use it as normal bytearray?
I am using the FileReference object. I want to be able to save the local file data into a ByteArray. I know that I can use the data property in Flash 10, but I would like a solution that works for earlier versions of Flash.
