I create instances of the component dynamically several times in my program, but I need to get a handle that will allow me to modify that instance of the component as desired. I pass specific information to this component on instantiation using bindable public variables in the component's MXML file. I add it to my main program using addChild().
I want to update the component's progressbar as necessary and I want to remove it from the box to which I addChild'd it. What's the easiest/best way to get a variable that will give me predictable access to each component so I can easily manipulate the components as necessary? Some research suggests creationComplete, but I decided it was faster to just ask than to go through lots of different experiments and come up blank.
Isn't there some way to re-write the following code, such that I don't need a gigantic switch statement with every conceivable type? Also, if I can replace the switch statement with some way to dynamically create new controls, then I can make the code smaller, more direct, and don't have to anticipate the possibility of custom control types.Before:

I need to dynamically bind properties of components created at runtime. In this particular case please assume I need to use bindProperty. I don't quite understand why the following simplistic test is failing (see code). When I click the button, the label text does not change.
I realize that there are simpler ways to go about this particular example using traditional non-dynamic binding, but I need to understand it in terms of using bindProperty.

I've a custom component where I do some graphics (e.g draw a line) and dynamically add a subcomponent (e.g a label) to it.
If I base the component off Group (which is recommended as per docs since its a spark component) then when I dynamically add a label the graphics part disappears.
However if I base it off Canvas this doesn't happen.
Why is that the case?

There are lots of examples of how to create skinnable components in AS3 using the new Spark component architecture, however I've yet to find any such examples using MXML.What I'm mainly referring to is defining the skin parts and skin states. It seems as though the SkinPart metadata is supposed to be associated with properties and as such can't be used in MXML, is this correct?

View 2 RepliesI'm making a game and I an in-game editor that is able to create entities on the fly (rather than hard coding them). I'm using a component-aggregation model, so my entities are nothing but a list of components.
What would be the best way to obtain or generate a list of components? I really don't want to have to manually add entries for all possible components in some giant registerAllComponents() method or something.
I was thinking maybe somehow with reflection via either the knowledge that all components inherit from the base Component class, or possibly via custom metatags but I haven't been able to find ways to get a list of all classes that derive from a class or all classes that have custom metatags.

I'm developing a Flex 4.5 app and in it I have a viewstack of 2 components that use some of the same services. Currently the only way I can get the app to correctly use the web services is by defining 2 different web services that use the same PHP web service file. For example: I have an app, and within it I have a viewstack with tab navigation of 2 components: #1) retrieve a list of all Salary Employees, and #2) retrieve a list of all Contractors. Currently to get it working I am defining a UsersTableEmployees webservice within component #1 and a UsersTableContractors webservice within component #2, but they both point to the same PHP class, and only differ in the arugment value I pass to them. Ie, getUsers("employee") and getUsers ("contractors"). Of course this is not best practice.
Searching StackOverflow and Google gives me many results about ColdFusion and MVC (example What's the best way to share data between components in Flex?), but I'm still confused. Can anyone here point me to a basic example (even sample MVC) and source code of an app that uses Zend AMF and allows different components to call common web services?

For example, suppose I have a "notification" template that I want to add to a notifications area every time something new happens. This template includes an icon (Image), text (label), and some space between these two things.
I want to take a template like that and make it so I can invoke it with a function like add_notification("icon", "text"). How would I go about doing that?
