I have a Flex 3 app which I want to instrument to report errors generated by the app to a server via simple HTTPService call. My idea is to wrap all the methods in try. catch blocks which then pass the Error object to the reportError() function (which then fires off the HTTP request and pops up a dialog) but is there a better way?

I have an HTTPService that executes the dataLoaded(e:ResultEvent):void function whenever it gets a result from a send() call. OK so If I call HTTPService.send() and then call HTTPService.send() again before the previous one receives a result, I end up repeatedly running dataLoaded() which is undesirable What I want is if HTTPService.send() gets called before a previous call to it returns a result. I want to cancel the first call, and only process the result from the last call to HTTPService.send()

My problem is, that the transport of the data this way is very slow... It takes about 20 sec for 10'000 lines of XML... How can this be done better?
I'm trying to follow all of your hints, but they don't seem to be simple to change. My code is done in a way that I can't get access to every Object, and save it. So what I do is to load the swf file with one xml, and return the whole xml after I run it. My guess is, that the time isn't spent on transporting those lines to the web server (this task gets done quickly normally), I thing that there happens something on the send function of the HTTPService that every object must get changed, before sending...
UPDATE2: I just realized that it is not a matter of the flex app it is a matter of the rails app. It receives a 700 KB String. I guess it is not done for handling such a object. How to transport it then? I tryed to work with the file upload but couldn't get it done... Error 2037 was occuring! I'll go on trying.

View 3 RepliesI got a mxml file that launch a script on my http server through a HTTPService.send() call. Since the script on the server side takes a LOOOONG time (it could take even more than a hour) i would like to drop the connection between my air application and server when a button is clicked. Don't know why but calling HTTPService.disconnect() is totally useless... No tcp connection drops and script keeps on running on server side. No HTTPService.cancel() nor set HTTPService var to null worked.
View 1 RepliesI'm having trouble simulating a click call to a button(displayObject) thats generated via an API call( youtube as3 API). I have not seen any mention of security reasons as to why I can not simulate a click as long as something is registered with a click handler. Basically I checked to make sure the button made is listening to a mouse click event with:
trace(generatedButton.hasEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK)) which returns true
I proceed to than call this:
generatedButton.dispatchEvent( new MouseEvent(MouseEvent.CLICK, true) );
And nothing happens yet if I physically click the button it works. Is there some security measure that prevents something from being fake clicked unless its origin is strictly from the system mouse?
I even set a timeout call on the click function and moved my cursor over the button and let it fire in case it was an issue of the mouse having to over the object but still nothing. I am kind of stumped at this point.
I have an application that displays the data from 3 xml files (auto generated from SQL table) using httpservices to get them.The first xml file is small and contains around 30 items, the second and thrid contain around 200-300 items each.The first dataset loads quickly and is invoked on creationComplete. The second and third are called from click events and take quite a few seconds to load. A user of the application will take at least 2-3 minutes reading the data from the first dataset so is there a way I can have the httpservice.send for the second and third xml files called automatically, straight after the first file has finished loading to be able to show the first dataset immediateley and get rid of the waiting times between dataset views.

I have created a simple method to retrieve XML output from an HTTPService and populate a database from it, but due to the async nature of Flex, the functions go through while its still retrieving data - hence causing the function to return a null value. find code below;

But it can go through the database population before it can retrieve the result from HTTPService hence producing a null result.
I am generating a playlist server-side but am having problems when I try and scrub it on the client-side.Here's the contents of main.asc of my application:

I have a component based on canvas, and within that component I have two images. I have the component listen for a click and when that event occurs one image goes transparent and the other becomes visible. This part works perfect. Now, on clicking that component, I also want to do something to the parent canvas, I already have this working for more basic types (image, canvas, text, etc) but the problem with my component is that the click event has the internal image as the target, so what I want to happen to the outside canvas is happening to the canvas of the component. How do I make my component as a whole the target of any clicks on it?

Its my first time at this form. I have a school project where I need to create a musical instrument that people can play (interact with) in flash.
I have ideas and images of how it will look and work but have no one, who knows flash, who can help me make it work. Again, I have never used flash (am intending to start learning this summer) but my project is due in about 3 weeks and I am wondering if I can get help from this forum?
Also, how much do you think it would cost to get someone to take my design and make it work. I am willing to pay for it (and our teacher has agreed that it is fine to get this kind of help).

I've just upgraded to CS4 from CS3, and the AS3 project I'm working on which was compiling perfectly well in CS3, is now failing to compile because of a variety of errors.I can solve some of them by casting:

I have been trying to get my live feed up and running for friends but they are unale to view it. I have FMS 4 with FMLE 3.2 on Win7. Under the fms url i have 'rtmp://localhost/live' and Stream name is 'livestream' I can view the stream just fine from my computer on which i am running both FMS and FMLE. but when i put the html file on my website, my friends just see the empty swfplayer. You can view it at[URL]. I was trying to figure out what the problem was so i copied the swf code 6 times with different settings but nothing worked. on my computer, only the first swf player works and im guessing that is because its localhost.
View 2 RepliesThe problem I have is that on linux, the flv files generated by fms are having permission 660. Due to this they become kind of useless as I cant do much with them. Is there a way to make fms generate streams with better default permission?

I've have to catch the asyncToken from send() and attach a new property so I know what it's supposed to do in the handler.URL...You can right-click and view source.Has anyone else run into an issue where listeners aren't removed? You see, when you have just one tag of something, it creates an object which is not an array. But when finds more than one, it puts it on an array structure.[code]I could check the format of resObj.specifictag (to check if it is has an array) and then duplicate the code (for each case). But -even if it's calling a function- I don't think it is an elegant solution.Well, I hope someone has a good idea on this matter. (I know from experience that SO has much more C++ experts than flex, but well...)The perfect thing would be that HTTPrequest handled every tag in a consistent way (using always arrays... though I'm guessing that that would also have its drawbacks).
