I need to render a large number of hextiles on a canvas. I would like to make this such that I render only the tiles that are visible to the user and load additional hextiles as the user scrolls (using drag or arrow keys or a pan control). I've the basic idea in my head but I'm looking in coming up with a more robust solution that will scale well. What I have in mind and can do right now: a. identify the tiles that need to be loaded to the screen and get the data for rendering them from the serverb. when the user drags, figure out the new set of tiles that need to be loaded and get the data and reload the whole screen again.
This works but it doesn't give the feeling of scrolling - it essentially suddenly repositions everything. Ideally, I would like to get the feeling of google maps when scrolling this. I've been playing with loading some tiles on the side off the map and only scrolling the underlying canvas when dragging but this doesn't work too well because the canvas runs out... it would be really neat if I had a canvas that behaved like a circular buffer so scrolling in any direction only kept a certain number of tiles in memory and I can continuously scroll in all directions.
I am trying to manipulate (move up and down, enable/disable and launch a form) child controls inside a panel control. However I am unable to get the id of the child control on which the click event occurs. To illustrate, I am trying to create similar functionality as is available. I am trying to create the up-down buttons that you see in the image at http:[url].......
I have a flex application and have embedded a flash (SWF) file into it using <mx:SWFLoader>. There is an "Exit" button on the Flash file. I want to be able to handle the button click event on the flex application.
So when that button in the flash file is clicked, I want to perform an action in the parent flex application.
I am currently developing a dynamic LineChart in FLEX 4.I am implementing a Tree control next to my LineChart, which will filter the LineChart dataprovider and lineseries. The tree control has several branches and ultimately 5 children (leaf nodes) at the bottom of the last branch.I need the leaf node/children to be displayed as checkboxes inside the tree control.As I understand,this will require overrides in the TreeItemRenderer class.This is where I am a little confused on how to implement that.Currently I can distinguish between leaf and branches using this code, in my main MXML component.I added this because it may be helpful to some beginning FLEXdevelopers, such as myself, who cannot easily find this functionality documented well:

I am looking at the TreeItemRenderer override class from the following example here: In the example, they override the "createChildden" super function to add checkboxes to the tree control.My question is, can I override the createChildren function directly in my MXML component, and not have to use an entire class file to override this functionality? Must I re-invent the wheel to do this?Also, how can I distinguish that my treeItem is a leaf node and not a parent, in the override function? I only want to add checkboxes to the leaf nodes, how can I differentiate? The following example adds checkboxes to all branches and leaf nodes, but I want to add checkboxes only to leaf node/children. How would you approach that?

Does any such control exist out of the box for Flex? I see people say things like "EPUB is just a zip file of XML and HTML files, so it shouldn't be too hard"... yeah, I get that... but if such a control exists, I wouldn't have to write it.
I am currently working on a Flash socket client for a pre-existing service/standard. The service uses TCP flow control to throttle itself and the Flash socket is reading in everything as fast as it can despite not being able to process it as fast as it's being taken in. This causes the bytesAvailable on the socket to keep increasing and the server never knows that the client has fallen behind.In short, is there any way to limit the size of bytesAvailable for a Flash Socket object or throttle it in some other way?
I am doing a elearning project in flex and it consist in a secuence of swf files and a player that load it based in a xml file, the problem is all swf files contents narrations and I need to control the volume of narrations from the player interface, anybody know how I can control the volume of a swf file from flex??
I am using the flex flv player component and i want to be able to skip 5 seconds forward and backwards , at the moment from what i understand from the documents it is not acurate because the movie can only skip to keyframes sometimes making the skip 6 or 7 seconds. the same goes to cue points which the flv might miss the actual point if there is no keyframe there/ my question is there any other way to use the player in a more accurate manner ? since i see on the web players that can do these skipps
Imagine you have a large number of video files stored on a server, and a Flex app which lets users play those videos they have access to. How can you best set this up? Wouldn't the Flex app just be sent the name of the video to play... in which case couldn't someone else write another flex app if they knew the file names? Can Flex play videos hosted on other sites? Is there some clever piece on the server I'm missing, which sits between the Flex video player and the files?

Latest_News_Display is under the Latest_News state. I want to set Latest_News_Display's x property even if the currentState is set to Intro. However, when I try to use Latest_News.Latest_News_Display.x = 10,it returns an error that says 1120: Access of undefined property Latest_News

I have a flex project where I uses the spark RichText control quite extensively, there are places where it is possible for me to replace RichText with the Label control - (The rich text occurred due an import from Flash Catalyst). My question is, is there any space/performance advantage in using Label over RichText, since Label seems like a much lighter option, I am building a web app, size matters.
I have a popup that contains a TabNavigator control. The tabs are dynamically added to the TabNavigator when the popup loads. Is there a good way to tell when one of the tabs is loaded, from the tab itself?I have a tab that requires a service call to be made, and I don't want the service call to be made unless the user actually goes and clicks the tab to view it. I could notify the tab from the popup control itself when the TabNavigator index was changed, but that doesn't seem like a good way to go about doing it.
Im trying to populate a tree control with an external xml file brought in via arraycollection but i need to group the xml data to display in the tree Okay my external xml file is called parts.xml and it looks like this:

additionally what i intend is for the user to have huge tree of parts and they select a node at the partnumber level and drag an drop it on to a datagrid where all the other tags of the part gets displayed.
Ive tried and tried many things without any luck. even now im thinking maybe if i looped through the array-collection and created a new array just for the tree to get it to display the way i need it, then when the user dragged and drop a part onto the grid i would have code that would look for that part number in the original arraycollection and add it to a new array just for the datagrid... i still dont know how i would create that new array for the tree!! cause the xml data is grouped by partgroup and then grouped again by parttype before you get the individual part numbers

I have an external CSS file which defines the style for the Button tag.Button {fontSize 11; blah...}I'm trying to override this style for the buttons of a ToggleButtonBar:<mx:ToggleButtonBar dataProvider="{pm.portalNavigation}" fontSize="16" />Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work. The fontSize stays at 11. How can I override the external CSS to resize the buttons in my ButtonBar?
i am doing a project and i am loading .swf files in a FLEX 3 SWFLoader. i made a HSlider as a seeker to control the .swf file (forward and backword); BUT... if the swf file has sound and i drag the seeker forward or back word the sound does not effect i want to control the sound as i control the swf file note:: the sound is in the .swf file not loaded

The custom render creates a vBox that is 35 pixels high with some labels in it.Now, my dataProvider, set in the script block,is returning 3 items for the list (say item1, item2 and item3). Because of the height of the list control, only 2 are shown initially.Now for the weird part, when I scroll down the list to see the next item it is all messed up.
Initial display: Item 1 Item 2
Display after clicking the scroll down button:
Item 2 (expected) Item 1 (What the ?, this should be item 3)
Display after click the scroll down button one more time:
Item 1 (all wrong)
Now, if I increase the height of the list control,so it has enough room to display all three items, it displays fine.Also,I put a trace statement is the item render and flex is rendering all three items with the correct data.
I am developing a Flex based window application. In that I have used a textArea, Now when I type some characters like ctrl+b, ctrl+e or ctrl+q, it shows some square characters in text area, I think these are some unicode characters but why these are being entered.
Unlike in simple textArea control on adobe example when I presses these key combination, there is nothing being entered, so why this only with me.

EDIT: I forgot to post that my current workaround is setting the selectedIndex = -1 after I get my node:XML. I'm afraid that if something bogs on the processor the user may see it select then deselect.
