Java :: Technology To Use To Write Systray Front-end To Webapp?
Jun 16, 2009
we have an internal webapplication running on tomcat, build on Spring. The webapplication front-end is build with Flex.I would like to create a cross-platform systray application that allows to go the home page of the application and displays alerts when certain things happen in the server.
What would you think is the best technology for:The systray itself? Java Swing?Communication between the server and the systray? Webservice? RSS feed? Spring remoting? JMX Notifications?

I'd like to port my Zuma-like game to browsers. It's not really complex 2D arcade game, just some animations and particle systems - really similar in complexity to the one I linked to.I'm wondering what technology should I use. I'm thinking about Java, Flash or maybe some solution working without a plugin (SVG, Canvas?). The cost of the technology is also really important to me (I'd prefer a free solution of course, but don't know if it's possible).It's really probable that I'll also port the game to Anrdoid and iPhone. Maybe if I picked Java, I could write one version that would work on both: browsers and Android phones?

I am new to web technologies. I along with my friends want to develop a web application. There is one guy in our team who knows Flex technology. I would like to use Java Springs framework at the back end. The web application caters to students a Music school. And for the same reason we chose Flex for UI since the application needs to be flashy and rich in graphics.
The application allows students to create profiles and interact with the teacher. Eventually we want to add Online Music classes feature with online payment gateway integrated. Kindly guide me which are the suitable technologies to use at the back end. Also let me know if SpringFlex with BlazeDS integration is a good combination with Adobe Flex.

The question is about the following operation: Flash client sends TeX code (or file) to server. TeX is compiled into picture. Picture is sent back to client As far as I can see the best way to do that is to use flash+java remoting. But, there're several java servers (looks like BlazeDS and Red5 are the most popular). Which one do you advise to use for my purposes? Note that steps 1-3 are not final, picture will be changed after that (e.g. some marks will be made).

I'm about to have to write a web page/app that will serve the agenda for circa 100 people on a page. One line per person, one column per day with 3 clickable zones in each cell. In HTML, the page is way complex for the browser to load quick and there is no possibility to click on a border between 2 cells to for example split an event that spreads among several cells. So I search an not too overkilling technology to render this kind of view. I begun with a PHP generated HTML page but the number of elements in the page make the mouse move jerky.
Moving to JAVA would give me better performances regarding the reuse of the generator of the view but it will still be an HTML page. So, here is my question: do you think that going forward with JAVA and its graphical capability is the simple solution or is Flash a better option for this part of a Web App? I'm afraid of the code I'll have to write in JAVA to handle the GUI presentation as well as the events generated by the 1000's cells plus borders of the page. In Flash, the graphical part seems simpler even if the actions handling is still huge.

I created a Java REST service using Jersey. I use three of the HTTP "verbs" GET, POST and DELETE. I want to create several prototype front ends for the service. After much research, a lot dating to 2008 and 2009, I have been unable to find anything remotely simple.My three options are:
1) resthttpservice. This project hasn't been updated in a year. The only activity are one off suggestions that individual users have implemented.URL...
2) Create an AIR application. This isn't unfeasible.
3) Writing my own socket level code but there is a security restriction with flash players and I need to implement a policy server.
I have already read the question posted about asking whether using Flex for REST services were worth it. That information is old as well. I want to introduce REST services to my company but Flex's limited support for HTTP PUT and DELETE are discouraging. My service also uses the Accept header to determine if JSON or XML will be returned to the client. I can't seem to change HTTP headers without doing socket programming.Is there an easy way to use Flex 4 with RESTful services that uses PUT/DELETE and the Accept HTTP header?

I write a flex + java application using the blazeds framework. when i write log files in my java classes the default path is the java path on the server. I want it to be my application at the tomcat/webapps/application directory when i write it hard-coded it failed (maybe bacause of permissions) but, i want it to be general (not hard-coded) so, what do i need to change in my java code in order to write files in my webapps directory? maybe it just an xml configuration?

I'm writing a simple game based on my physics engine for Android (in Java). Because I want to play with some special graphic effects performance is very important for me. I read on the Internet that you can write an application in ActionScript3 and then just export it as an iPhone/iPad or Android application. That means, I wouldn't have to rewrite everything from Java to Objective-C if I wanted to make version also for iPhone. Do you have any experience with writing games in ActionScript3 for both Android and iPhone/iPad? Are there any significant advantages / disadvantages?

Ok, basically my Flex app will open up a socket and listen on it. My java program will write some string to this port.
My AS3 code is
private function onRecvClick():void
{
var host:String = "localhost";
[Code]....
While trying to write to the socket, i am getting this java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect. Funny thing is that the socket in Flex doesn't seem to dispatch any events, is it normal for that to happen?

There are many dynamic languages that target Sun's JVM (Groovy, Scala, Jython, Jruby etc) and I was sure there are many that target Adobe's AVM as well. But I was surprised to find only haXe do something similiar. related question on this site
I think the eclipse e4 SWT project doesn't compile to ABC (ActionScript Byte Code) directly, but first converts Java to AS3 and then the Flex compilter does the rest.Could it be that no one yet wrote a simple Java / Python / Scala AVM2 compiler that can be used as an alternative to the proprietary Adobe Flash Builder (formerly Flex Builder)?I don't mind paying Adobe for a fine producy, but writing Java in eclipse is so much faster and convinent than the half baked adobe plugin suite. are there really no efforts other than haXe?

I used FalshDevelop to compile PanoSalado opensource ".as" files to produce corresponding ".swf" files.it works great and my movie shows.However, when I run it via a webapp under Tomcat, it just sits there. The url is:Note that I'm running the same file (.swf) from the same place in the filesystem.And I even tried to embed the swf in an html page (actually a jsp page) to see if it would work.. but no dice... same issue.FWIW the html that is used to invoke the swf is :
<div id="flashbanner">this will be replaced by the SWF.</div>
<script type="text/javascript"> alert('0'); var so = new SWFObject('maps/ModuleLoader.swf','mpl','555','416','9', '#336699'); alert('1');

I'm currently working on a corporate intranet application. Part of the requirements are to have the application start a program on the users local PC (Minitab) and then have the webapp communicate with it via it's COM interface.
What are my options for doing something like this?
A signed Java applet and Jacob ActiveX and .NET (this will only work in IE, correct?) Flash? (can flash be given permission to the local PC?) Silverlight???
I'm leaning towards trying the java approach (all users will have Java and flash installed) but am wondering what's the path of least resistance.
The application runs from Apache2/Python/modwsgi on Gentoo Linux. All users will be running WinXP or Win7 with Firefox or IE6/7/8.

I would like to add local storage to an existing Flash webapp that up until now uses a web server to store data (database and media files). What are my options? I'd like to reuse the code of the Flash webapp and run it inside a browser if possible (which, if I'm not mistaken, is not possible with Adobe AIR).

I'm doing some research for a Maps project I'll be starting soon, and I'm trying to evaluate which of the Map APIs will be best-suited to this project. I've worked pretty extensively with the Google Maps Javascript API, but no others. My basic requirements are, in no particular order[code]...
Flexible: the Google Maps JS API is a good example of this. Basically this leads to lots of good things like numerous third-party plugins/extensions, and puts a lot of power in the devs' hands.
Well-documented and supported: again, the GMap JS API is a good example. If I'm going to start working with a new, rich API, I'm going to need to be able to find answers.
As of now, I'm inclined to use the Google Map Javascript API since I am familiar with it. However, the question of whether or not the Flash API might be able to handle many points more efficiently and gracefully prompted this SO question.

I'm planning a webapp. I have all the wireframes defined, the interfaces designed in photoshop, data structures etc. It will be built on php and mysql however I've been unable to decide on which technology to use as a GUI. All your insights are welcome.
The problem with going the html way is that the GUI makes use of a special font that is crucial to the visual aspect of the app. So this font is required. For headers and fixed sections I could do sfir or use images but being a webapp, the amount of dynamically generated content makes it imposible to use image replacements. Enter flash. Flash solves the font problem easily, it even adds font antialiasing and animations which makes it look even sexier. Another pro is being able to deploy as an air app to use local storage for users that have troublesome connections. This way when internet access is restored the app can sync with the main servers. BUT... flash is being ignored by major developers, this would mean the app wouldn't be accessible to mobile devices, ipads,search engines, etc and requires the installation of the flash plugin which is not that big a deal but should be considered.

I use a flex app (A) to load another flex app (B) using SWFLoader (both built using Flex Builder 3 sometime ago).Everything works fine as expected across all (IE, FF, Chrome, Safari) desktop browsers.However, if I use a TabNavigator within the flex app (B) then when you click on any of the tabs it unloads the flex app (B) and re-starts flex app (A). This behaviour appears to be limited to Webkit based browsers (Chrome & Safari) the rest of the browsers (IE, FF) work fine.

I want to develop an app, which will have a GUI, and will do real time processing of user input. App should work in most common web browsers, and processing will be client side. Also, the app must only work if user is online and logged in to my website. Something like a "license". People should not be able to hack/reverse engineer the code etc. Is it possible to do what I want using Java Applet or a Flash application? Any other technology?

Is it possible to run a Flex client in IntelliJ internally and have it talk to a separately deployed server instance? The server's a java webapp. This will make developing, especially debugging, much easier. What I'm trying to avoid is having to rebuild and redeploy the webapp to get the updated Flex code in it. I want to just build flex and run it against the server.
The flex client is embedded in an HTML page on the server, so in production the users access the client by going to a web page. We're using GraniteDS if that's important.
Update
I'm managed to cobble something together, but it's ugly.I made a copy of our wrapper HTML page and fixed the links to refer to the SWF in target.I setup the IntelliJ run config to point to that HTML page.I set the 'Place SWF file in a local-trusted sandbox' to true
Hardcoded the {server.name}, {server.port}, and {context.root} values in the service-config.xml GraniteDS config file to localhost, etc.
I can mavenize #1, but #3's isn't really a permanent solution. That part is still a problem because I can't check this in.
