Java :: Creating A Zuma-like Web Game / Which Technology To Use?
Jan 31, 2012
I'd like to port my Zuma-like game to browsers. It's not really complex 2D arcade game, just some animations and particle systems - really similar in complexity to the one I linked to.I'm wondering what technology should I use. I'm thinking about Java, Flash or maybe some solution working without a plugin (SVG, Canvas?). The cost of the technology is also really important to me (I'd prefer a free solution of course, but don't know if it's possible). It's really probable that I'll also port the game to Anrdoid and iPhone. Maybe if I picked Java, I could write one version that would work on both: browsers and Android phones?

we have an internal webapplication running on tomcat, build on Spring. The webapplication front-end is build with Flex.I would like to create a cross-platform systray application that allows to go the home page of the application and displays alerts when certain things happen in the server.
What would you think is the best technology for:The systray itself? Java Swing?Communication between the server and the systray? Webservice? RSS feed? Spring remoting? JMX Notifications?

I am new to web technologies. I along with my friends want to develop a web application. There is one guy in our team who knows Flex technology. I would like to use Java Springs framework at the back end. The web application caters to students a Music school. And for the same reason we chose Flex for UI since the application needs to be flashy and rich in graphics.
The application allows students to create profiles and interact with the teacher. Eventually we want to add Online Music classes feature with online payment gateway integrated. Kindly guide me which are the suitable technologies to use at the back end. Also let me know if SpringFlex with BlazeDS integration is a good combination with Adobe Flex.

The question is about the following operation: Flash client sends TeX code (or file) to server. TeX is compiled into picture. Picture is sent back to client As far as I can see the best way to do that is to use flash+java remoting. But, there're several java servers (looks like BlazeDS and Red5 are the most popular). Which one do you advise to use for my purposes? Note that steps 1-3 are not final, picture will be changed after that (e.g. some marks will be made).

I just saw the McDonald's commercial which I have linked to below and I would like to try developing something similar for a festival. We have been talking about making a game in which the user has to use their iPhone and something like what McDonald's has done would be great. My question is if anyone have an idea how I can send the data and what technology they might have used? I imagine making two websites. One on which the game itself is shown and one which is the controller but how would I make sure that the data is sent and handled fast enough?I am familiar with JavaScript and PHP. I have been working a bit with flash and ActionScript and I am wondering if that might be best for the game (obviously not the controller)You can see the McDonald's commercial on the link below. Basically, the user visits a webpage which is the controller and then they are able to play the ping-pong game on the big screen.

I'm building a Facebook multiplayer game where the client side is in FLEX and the server side is in Java and I wanted to know if there is a guide on how to build the server clients managing system. When I say server clients managing system, I mean a server which many clients will connect to and will be able to choose between tables to join and play or to create their own table, same way as in texas holdem poker.

I'm about to have to write a web page/app that will serve the agenda for circa 100 people on a page. One line per person, one column per day with 3 clickable zones in each cell. In HTML, the page is way complex for the browser to load quick and there is no possibility to click on a border between 2 cells to for example split an event that spreads among several cells. So I search an not too overkilling technology to render this kind of view. I begun with a PHP generated HTML page but the number of elements in the page make the mouse move jerky.
Moving to JAVA would give me better performances regarding the reuse of the generator of the view but it will still be an HTML page. So, here is my question: do you think that going forward with JAVA and its graphical capability is the simple solution or is Flash a better option for this part of a Web App? I'm afraid of the code I'll have to write in JAVA to handle the GUI presentation as well as the events generated by the 1000's cells plus borders of the page. In Flash, the graphical part seems simpler even if the actions handling is still huge.

I would like to code an script that would with some trial and error method learn to play QWOP game, that is available at Flash format on Internet (more information on QWOP). I found out there are some challenges on it: The program is available on Flash and I don't know how any Script (I am planning to use JavaScript) could use virtually its UI, it means to send the appropriate key strokes to the game UI. I know Java Script is not the easiest language to master and especially there are challenges on such a complicated coding aim as Artificial Intelligence.

So I'm not 100% sure if it's possible, but what I'd like to do is take a model that someone has created for a game, say in Blender or something similar, in various formats, and from that create an image to show on a website. Are there any Java libraries around? Java3D maybe? Or even something in Flash? Ideally you'd be able to rotate the model in some embedded flash app, but I'd settle for a plain old image.

[please note this may require AS3 + Java knowledge] Background Information:
I'm trying to build a game using Java + Pulpcore, but I'm fairly new to the scene. The game I'm building could possibly be more performance intensive than I thought, and I know Java would solve my problems with this, but there are a couple questions I have dealing with strict-types, etc.

this code just makes the object travel to the upper right hand corner of the screen and it doesnt move after that. so i am missing something
my end goal is to have an object that will chase the users touch coordinates. I know how to have the object follow such coordinates but I dont want it to follow the exact path, but rather the shortest path to the most updated coordinates. so more like an intercept course

I'm developing a web-based fantasy football game. Most of the game is a straight-forward web application built on top of Linux/Apache/Php/MySQL.
I'm trying to figure out how to implement the draft application. The draft date and time will be scheduled in advance by each league's owner. Up to 32 users may be logged on for a given league's draft, and there is no limit to how many drafts may be happening concurrently. The users will take turns selecting players, and each user's turn will have a time limit. I'd like for all the users to be able to see whose turn it is, how much time that user has left to select a player, who they select, and which players are still available. If there are users in the league who are not logged in during the draft I'd like to be able to detect that and automatically assign players to them rather than waiting for the time to run out on their turn. Ideally I'd also like to have a chat window so the users could chat with one another during the draft.
My background is in desktop application development, so if necessary I could write server code in C#/.NET or Java. As far as I can see these are the options: PHP/AJAX - It seems like it would be possible to have all the state for the draft in the database and have the operations for the draft run in PHP triggered by requests from the clients? I guess in this case the draft doesn't start until at least one user logs in, and it seems like it would be a lot of polling requests to the server if I want everyone notified quickly when a user makes a selection.

Basically there will be a club and a ball. You can control the power and angle to hit the ball. How do I go about implementing this? Is flash the easiest way to go? I want to implement this as a facebook game. Any game libraries specific to this I can use to quickly implement a basic version? I am comfortable with Java and PHP.

I'm building a multiplayer card game using Flex on the client side and Java on the server side and I wanted to know if I must sockets and the accept method in order to connect users to the server for in order for them to join a game room or create one or to chat.In the past I've learned how to build a game server which both sides are JAVA and connection was in sockets but now days the client side will be in FLEX which has few ways to connect to a Java server (XML,SOAP,BLAZEDS(AMF)) and I find it hard to understand how to write the Java server in order to do all the features of a game server, especially managing the rooms and sending data back to the users.
In the sockets way, when a user was connecting to the server and he had opened a room, this room was opened on a thread and who ever was joined that room then he was connected to the same thread and sending the messages to the right place was easy, so the problem is understanding how to do the same using SOAP or BLAZEDS.

How can I create a flash video using Java.. (Java and JavaScript have nothing to do with each other, in my world Java Script is a useless technology). Does Flash Professional have a Java API and if so how do I get the JavaDocs and an example to see the complexity of that API. Does the Adobe Media Encoder have a Java API that I can use.. if so, JavaDocs and an example?
Picture having two million directories, each directory has 30 photos and a sound clip. From this I want to produce two million flash movies each movie has 30 photos and the sound clip. Each movie has panning of the photos (Ken Burns, Civil War on PBS). What does Adobe have that I can call from within my Java code or Perl perhaps. I need to do this every two weeks, at least. Using a standard user interface is not going to work, even if I hired half of the planet.. I have been on the phone with Adobe for two days and have gotten nowhere.. surly Adobe has something which allows me to automate the creation of Flash movies. right?

I'm trying to create a simple Flash chat application for educational purposes, but I'm stuck trying to send a policy file from my Java server to the Flash app (after several hours of googling with little luck). The policy file request reaches the server that sends a harcoded policy xml back to the app, but the Flash app doesn't seem to react to it at all until it gives me a security sandbox error.

I have read the various posts here on SO regarding screen capturing, but none seem to be answering my situation. On our website (inside a web page), essentially here is what I would like to be able to do.
User clicks on a 'capture region of screen' button. They get some sort of draggable/sizable box they can use to define the area to capture the captured area gets converted into a (preferrably) .png image is uploaded (or at least made available to upload - maybe saved somewhere).I realize this is not doable with javascript alone. So,I am open to a Java or Flash solution, and/or even a commercial solution (a drop-in java applet that I can add to our site).

Any tutorials that I try do not achieve the preloader effect that I desire. What I would really, really like is this:A .swf file that wraps my .swf game and puts in a preloader. That's it.How do I do this, or specifically, what should I be typing into the search window of this forum?

I'm sort of new to Flash, have been using it for ages but just to animate, i haven't done any programming or interactive stuff for years, so i feel new to it again!Creating a very simple platform.Movie clip of the character (instance name z_1)- runs button - when pressed makes z_1 invisible and loads another movieclip of him firing a weapon (z_fire). (also makes ground stop moving- basically game is a static running animation, over a moving ground, if that makes sense)This all works fine, i even figured how to make the score increase! After the firing animation is finished (there is a stop on the movieclip) i want the original running animation to be visible again and for the ground etc to play again. The firing animation is only 12 frames long so i imagine i need to tell the button to resume normal service on the stage after that time period![code]It's probably completely wrong but it works, i just need to know the extra code to make the original animations start back again after z_fire has played.
