Javascript - Browser-neutral Way To Start Local Process From Intranet?
Sep 15, 2010
We currently have a corporate intranet built with ASP.NET and originally designed for IE. One of the purposes of the intranet is to manage file versioning and to launch programs with the current file version. This requires the intranet to start processes on the machine locally, and is done using ActiveX.
We are now reworking the intranet to be as browser-neutral as possible, but this local application launching thing has us stumped. Can anyone suggest a browser-neutral way to start processes locally? This is strictly for internal use on a corporate LAN with computers that are authenticated on a Windows domain.
Possibilities that we've floated, in rough order of preference:
[Code]...
Anyone have any thoughts on what is likely to work and be not a huge PITA to implement?

We would like to build a flash video player into our corporate intranet site, currently we are evaluating JW Player and have come across and issue accessing the FLV files stored on a mirrored share drive that all users have access to on the local intranet.From what I can tell the Adobe flash plugin will not allow a SWF file hosted 'online' (intranet) to access a shared directory that the user has access to. Is there any way around this?

So I'm building a web application, and in part of the application the user should choose an XviD (.avi) video file from his machine, to be played in the browser (without uploading it). I decided to use Flash for this.
Now I have two questions about this:
Which Flash video player is free to use and capable of doing this? How should I let the user choose a video file, and how can I link the Flash video player to the file?

Is it possible to create a screenshot from the current page the user is on? (It's for an Intranet enviroment).
I know this is not possible with JavaScript alone, but is it possible with Flash or maybe an Java applet?
I have been searching around but I couldn't find anything.

All I want, is to have a button (play_but) to start the process. I want to get rid of the enter frame business. I tried, but I had to click every time the button to draw the line. I just want to click the button once and have my line plotted.
var xspeed:Number = 2;
var yspeed:Number = -2;
var xpos:Number = 0;
var ypos:Number = stage.stageHeight;
graphics.lineStyle (2, 0xffffff);

Currently I am building an application that launches crtmpd (a rtmp server written in C++).
Whenever I launch the application from within Flash Builder it works great, if I install a release build from an air file the process.start() returns a generic "could not start process" error.
The crtmpserver.exe is stored in applicationDirectory and the config file is kept in applicationStorageDirectoy.
So I've moved it to the native storage directory. But the problem persists. I've found the following though:
startupInfo = new NativeProcessStartupInfo();
startupInfo.executable = binFile;
processArgs = new Vector.<String>();
processArgs.push(luaFile.nativePath);
startupInfo.arguments = processArgs;
In the IDE after this startupInfo is setup correctly. On client machines all properties of startupInfo are still null.

I have a HTML box and load a local html file from the project. In this HTML file I use jquery and I want to load an image from my user directory. I see the image from my user directory but jquery doesn't works. I get this error:
[Code]...
But if I load an image from the app workspace, everything works fine (I see the image and Jquery works). Is this a policy problem? The error says that is a "null object reference" problem, but this can't be true...

I'm wondering if its possible to do what I'm thinking, and if it is possible, does anyone know of a flash object that does what I need? I know a Flash object can provide a javascript API to interact with it, what I dont know is can Flash send an email directly without the need to talk to the webserver to do so? If thats possible would it not be possible to write a flash object that did nothing but provide an API to send emails? Has such a thing been created that is out there for others to use?
I'm looking to create a email form on a web page but the site is static (no server scripting). In my situation server scripting is not possible as there is no server, the site is 100% client side on a CD/DVD/USB Stick.

I'm currently developing a flex mobile project. I currently need to load local javascript using stagewebview. Like:
var str:String = '<head>'+
'<script src="myLocalJs.js"/>'+
'</head><body>...</body>';
webView:StageWebView = new StageWebView();
webView.loadString(str);
Is there any way to load local javascript using StageWebView? I'm not expecting an answer like 'There is a project called StageWebViewBridge' since it does't have all the features I need.

I followed less second tutorial on AMFPHP+MYSQL+Flash; I got the data from MYSQL database and AMFPHP loaded in flash; and I was able to trace these as separate variables and then display them in dynamic text boxes in flash, however when I upload my .swf and html page etc to my website it doesn't load the variables in the text fields they just stay blank and I am left with a blank background. I just want to show my friends what I've accomplished today; as I've only been using Flash/AS3 for about three weeks now; I can only do this by uploading it to my website but it wont work once I've uploaded it there.

Is there any hook to react to a user drag and dropping a text file onto a browser? If the user drops a text file onto the browser with my page loaded, I'd like to be able to open the contents of the text file using javascript. I don't think this is possible, but just checking.
Is something like this possible in flash?
As an alternate, the user could specify a file path for me, then I could open the text file and read it. Seems like this is a security risk and probably won't be allowed, but just checking. It looks like this is possible with flash 10?

I'm looking for javascript libraries and code that can simulate localStorage on browsers that do not have native support.Basically, I'd like to code my site using localStorage to store data and know that it will still work on browsers that don't natively support it. This would mean a library would detect if window.localStorage exists and use it if it does. If it doesn't exist, then it would create some sort of fallback method of local storage, by creating its own implementation in the window.localStorage namespace.I understand that Flash and Silverlight can be used for local storage as well, but haven't found anything on using them as a fallback for standard HTML5 localStorage. Perhaps Google Gears has this capability too?Please share any related libraries, resources, or code snippets that you've found! I'd be especially interested in pure javascript or jquery-based solutions, but am guessing that is unlikely.

How would one go about caching / managing many large files (videos) on a user's computer via browser mechanisms (plugins are acceptable solutions). From what I can tell, local storage is about database type data, not files.

I'm trying to load a local xml file:
xmlLoader.load(new URLRequest("../xml/xmlData.xml"));
But I'm getting this security sandbox violation:
#2148: Only local-with-filesystem and trusted local SWF files may access local resources.
I don't get this error when I embed the XML file directly with the EMBED metadata tag.

While trying to develop some Android app I ran into the following problem:I load an swf file to a WebView, that makes js calls. I want to catch those js calls, so I useWebViews.addJavascriptInterface() to do so.Everything worked just fine when i loaded the swf file from a remote server, but when I load the same swf file form the Android file system, the javascript methods seem not to run (at least I cannot see them).

I started off game development on Android about a year ago and want to expand to developing browser games as well. Is flash worth learning? Or should I go for using an engine like Unity and learn game development in c#. Mostly I'm just worried that I would be wasting my time learning flash if I'm not going to get much use from it.

Really puzzled by the flaky behavior of LocalConnection. Using a debug utility(LuminicBox) that uses localConnection to work.
When the page containing the swf is loaded in a browser locally , localConnection works.
When the identical page and swf are viewed 'live' on a remote site, localConnection fails.

What is the best (and simplest!) way to record video from a webcam to the local filesystem--all from a browser? Ideally the video would be recorded in HD and then we could use ffmpeg later to convert it into the formats and sizes needed.
Here are some things we've looked into:
Use Flash to stream to a local Red5 server. But we've had issues with video quality here. A Java applet using JMF (can we even write to the filesystem from an applet?). We've heard this might not be very efficient though. Can it handle HD?
Write a custom Firefox plugin. Would this be very difficult?
Basically the hardest thing here is that the controls need to be embeddable into a browser. All we need is a box where the webcam frame is displayed to the user, and then some Javascript hooks so we can code start/stop buttons within the HTML page.
The computer is fully controlled (it's a kiosk) and we can do just about anything to it. We just need a solution that runs in the browser. Our current app is run in Firefox in kiosk mode and the webcam recording is just a part.

We have a Web login feature. We will offer Free calls to a large campaign.
Scenarios:
Because of free calls, we will offer a unique file to be downloaded and stored After a week or month we will call them and offer them our desktop application to scan and see how trusted, the user is If we dont find the same file again, we will never start business and more our own statistics Based on that report we want to do some follow ups campaign We can do this with cookies but we want user experience and trust analysis
Example: if you play a music in youtube.com, without notice your file is actually in /tmp/Flash....flv with lot of data on it.
Question: How can i do the similar using Flex/Flash from the web browser ?
