Javascript :: Modify Link Target Within PDF Based On Operating System
Jun 28, 2011
We have an "application" consisting of a large number of PDF files that link to each other.
Some of the PDF files have links that must be a web URL when running on a PC (or a Mac) but need to open a specific application when running on an iPad.
When not on the iPad, the links look like "http://10.85.1.102".
When on the iPad, they look like "netcam4://2" - which opens the NetCam4 application with camera 2 selected.
NOTE: this is already working but we have to create two versions of the PDF and it would be much better to have only one.
Is there a way using JavaScript (or ActionScript or whatever) for the PDF to determine in which OS it is being displayed and modify the link appropriately?
We don't care if this decision is made when loading the PDF or when the link is clicked.
By the way, so far we have found that GoodReader on the iPad is the only PDF viewer that will properly follow links - including those to the NetCam4 app.

I came across a website recently that outputs a whole bunch of user info: IP, browser, OS, flash version, javascript, etc in a very easy to use format. It was specifically designed for remote support, in order to determine user operating environment. However, I cant recall the name of the website.

I'm starting to localize my flash application. I'm trying to see if there is a way to rollback on default operating system fonts for languages like japonese so I don't have to embed them. So far I didn't find anything online. I'm currently using css to define the font family like:
@font-face {
fontFamily: "Tuffy Regular";
src:url("/assets/fonts/Tuffy-Regular.ttf");
embedAsCFF: true;
}

How do you use the operating system's tooltip utility in Flash with Actionscript 3? An analogous invokation of the OS tooltip is in HTML's anchor tag:
<a href="foo.html" title="awesome website">click</a>
I don't want to draw my own custom tooltip because (A) it will look inconsistent across operating systems, (B) long tooltips wouldn't be able to float out of the SWF, and (C) it takes time to program (whether to align left or right depending on how close you are to a boundary).

I'm using Flash CS3 to create a graphical interface with multiple buttons--each of which opens a different linked file. The interface and linked files will all be included on a memory stick given out to people. The code below works perfectly for calling up a .wmv file (from a folder in the root drive called "linked_files")when a button is clicked. But my question is this: Is there a way for AS3 to recognize whether a computer is
running Windows (in which case it would open the .wmv) or Mac OS (in which case it would open a .mov instead)? I need to do the same thing with a couple of .exe files.Obviously Mac won't read them, in which case I need an appropriate alternative to open.

The following doesn't work (although it gives no explicit error), but why not?nd... Is there really no way around it, strictly using the with statement? Forget using for / foreach.
with (object1, object2) {
attribute = value;
method();
}
Why the code above gives no syntax error, doesn't work but is accepted by with?If it's possible, how could we change multiple objects with same attribute using with?
var object1 = { attribute: 3 };
var object2 = { attribute: 2, method: function() { alert('blah'); } };
var object3 = { method: function() {alert('bleh'); } };
[code]....

I'm trying to send a variable from an HTML into Flash in order to modify it based on the value. I generally know how FlashVars works in AS3, so I did some quick reading for AS2 and made a test swf.
[URL]
In my swf, the first frame only has this code:
Code:
if (_root.tester == undefined) {
var passed:String = "Nothing Passed";
} else {
var passed:String = _root.tester;
}
texty.text = passed;
According to what I've read and what my code is, this should work. It should read the value of video as the value of _root.tester (check the HTML code), yet it's always listed as undefined.

I am playing around with the timedate.getHours(); function and I was wondering how I might go about setting up a condition whereby between 3am and 3pm, movieclip1 loads and between 3pm and 3am, movieclip2 loads?
I'm sure it's not that difficult but I'm not sure how to structure the if/else statement or read the hour from the timedate function.

Basically I am making a Turn Based battle system. Each Frame is an attack. So for the enemy I did this:
(in scene Frame) attack = Math.round (Math.random ()*2)+0;
so it would randomly attack
then I also put in this in an object INSIDE my enemy clip
onClipEvent(enterFrame){
onClipEvent(enterFrame){
if (_root.attack == 1 || _root.attack == 2){
[Code].....
you see what ive tried to do here havent you?
why isnt it working? it plays, the random value thing works(used dynamic text box to check this) so what am i missing? (using AS2)

use Flex which has a great constraint based layout system architecture by default, but in Flash CS3 there is no built in way to do this. To create intelligently resizing layouts, you have to manually resize each element on a stage resize event. This can create obscene amounts of code really fast, especially if you start to work in simple arithmetic to avoid hard coding in positions, such as "stageWidth-obj.x-obj.width" etc.
Is there any code library to do this for you built in AS3? I basically want something like this:
ActionScript Code:
var layout = new Layout();
layout.header_mc = 'left|right|top';
layout.left_mc = 'left|top|bottom';
[Code].....

I currently have a system that takes the users order and then sends the data to a php file where the details are then emailed to the shop admin. I accomplish this by using...
ActionScript Code:
//Retreive and pass the information to a PHP page
var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
variables.vItemCode=menu4dynamictext.text;
variables.vBaseColor=basecolorpickertext.text;
var request:URLRequest=new URLRequest("sendmail.php");
[Code] .....
However I need to change this system so that rather than each order being sent automatically, the details are stored in an array so that a cart system can be produced somehow! It doesn't need to be overly secure, the system simply needs to email colour details etc to the admin.

I'd like to create a rating and comments system to the video site I'm working on. Basically the user will rate the video (stars or thumbs up) from 1-5, have the new rating process and improve or lower the video rating automatically. For the comments the user will be able to write and send the comment and then either have it posted automatically with the option for the site moderator to erase any offensive comment or have it sent to a database for approval first and then post it by the site moderator. I assume I need a php form and action script code?

card2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, card2buttonpress);
function card1buttonpress(e:MouseEvent):void {

how one might change a site element based on the users computer time? What we are trying to do is change the color of the sky and shade of the buildings in a cityscape scene on a cartoonish style site. If it is 9:00 PM on the site visitor's end, they will see a nighttime colored scene. If it's 7:00 AM, it would be sunrise-ish.

Looking back at an internal system I just built, the common server / page model with minor use of Ajax for some UI components. I'm not sure if I'm satisfy with the end result because it seems like we spent too much time on the frontend. Not a big fan of going through all the trouble for styling and making sure the CSS works right.
So I started thinking, are there better tools for the frontend?
How do Flex and ExtJS compare? maybe in these areas?

There's clearly a bunch of new stuff in Flash 10, I'm seeing a bunch in the Graphics class so far. Struggling a bit to reconcile it with what I know already but it looks useful - render lists and 3D transforms, etc - however I wondered if there are good arguments for targeting Flash 9 since I can definitely manage without all the new stuff I don't know. Like support on non-Windows devices, wide adoption of Flash 9 Vs 10, etc.

I have a looped sound and some components in my main movie (scroll bar) which for some reason is really bogging down my swf and causing the preloader bar not to show up until like 46% or something ridiculous.So I am trying to solve the problem by having a preloader swf as suggested by Kode in this thread. However, now all my targeting is messed up in my main movie. Everything that was _root has to change but I can't tell what to load it into. I tried using _parent, _parent._parent, _root.container_mc (which is a blank movie clip created in the preloader swf that main is loaded into after the preloader is 100%) and others but nothing works. Even the simple looped sound which was originally just _root.backsound.start(0,999) can't be targeted.how to target things on my main stage based on the preloader swf?

My company has some software which we use to acquire data and interact with some hardware. If we wanted to put a mockup on a website which allows the user to get a feel for the UI (gather some data, change some settings etc.), what are some good methods to do so?I'm thinking either some clever javascript or flash. I've done some JS before but only to style elements of a page. I did some stuff with flash about 8 years ago and found it really fiddly.
So my questions; Are javascript/flash reasonable solutions for this or is there something better. What is likely to be the simpler/quicker route? Is there a better way to achieve the end result?] The demo doesn't need real data, just some fake/dummy example stuff is fine.

What cool web-based examples have you seen that generate music dynamically by the user? Either based on samples with an interesting interface, by sound synthesis or similar methods.Example: http://acko.net/blog/javascript-audio-synthesis-with-html-5Has any serious web-based dynamical sound synthesis been done yet (e.g. generating sine waves dynamically and similar), or are there still inherent technological boundaries to do so?What are your general thoughts about generating music dynamically on the web? Is any form of more involved generation still too CPU-intense? Be it using Flash, JavaScript or audio-tag. (Sadly all my efforts have been far too CPU-intense, and not a very satisfying experience for the user.)

We have some older Flash and Flex files that someone before me lost the original files on. Now they want to add event tracking when some links inside the SWFs are clicked that use the old navigateToURL type ActionScript. Does anyone know if you can intercept that action with JavaScript so I can add the tracking they want before it redirects the page?
