Flash :: Operating System - Get User Browser - Os - Version - Javascript Info
May 11, 2011
I came across a website recently that outputs a whole bunch of user info: IP, browser, OS, flash version, javascript, etc in a very easy to use format. It was specifically designed for remote support, in order to determine user operating environment. However, I cant recall the name of the website.

We have an "application" consisting of a large number of PDF files that link to each other.
Some of the PDF files have links that must be a web URL when running on a PC (or a Mac) but need to open a specific application when running on an iPad.
When not on the iPad, the links look like "http://10.85.1.102".
When on the iPad, they look like "netcam4://2" - which opens the NetCam4 application with camera 2 selected.
NOTE: this is already working but we have to create two versions of the PDF and it would be much better to have only one.
Is there a way using JavaScript (or ActionScript or whatever) for the PDF to determine in which OS it is being displayed and modify the link appropriately?
We don't care if this decision is made when loading the PDF or when the link is clicked.
By the way, so far we have found that GoodReader on the iPad is the only PDF viewer that will properly follow links - including those to the NetCam4 app.

How do you use the operating system's tooltip utility in Flash with Actionscript 3? An analogous invokation of the OS tooltip is in HTML's anchor tag:
<a href="foo.html" title="awesome website">click</a>
I don't want to draw my own custom tooltip because (A) it will look inconsistent across operating systems, (B) long tooltips wouldn't be able to float out of the SWF, and (C) it takes time to program (whether to align left or right depending on how close you are to a boundary).

I'm starting to localize my flash application.I'm trying to see if there is a way to rollback on default operating system fonts for languages like japanese so I don't have to embed them.So far I didn't find anything online.I'm currently using css to define the font family like :
@font-face
{
fontFamily: "Tuffy Regular";
src:url("/assets/fonts/Tuffy-Regular.ttf");

I'm using Flash CS3 to create a graphical interface with multiple buttons--each of which opens a different linked file. The interface and linked files will all be included on a memory stick given out to people. The code below works perfectly for calling up a .wmv file (from a folder in the root drive called "linked_files")when a button is clicked. But my question is this: Is there a way for AS3 to recognize whether a computer is
running Windows (in which case it would open the .wmv) or Mac OS (in which case it would open a .mov instead)? I need to do the same thing with a couple of .exe files.Obviously Mac won't read them, in which case I need an appropriate alternative to open.

In FlashBuilder's compiler options (Properties->Flex Compiler), under "Adobe Flash Player options" there is an option for "Use a specific version", where you can tell it what Flash Player to link against:
How do I get this value at runtime? Note that I am not talking about the Flash Player version, but the version that the swf was linked against.

We have a sort of game, generated with Flash in AS3, on our website where the reader is invited to eliminate the California Budget Deficit. It's connected to a database where we keep track of the responses and print them in chart form and post the results on the website so everyone can see the most popular budget items the readers want to cut.
See the interactive in question here:
[URL]
We've had many, many requests to have an option where the reader can get a copy of his/her choices that he/she can print out. I've thought about having a movieclip pop up that shows those choices (and that would be simple enough), but in addition to that, what I'd really like to do is have a way to download those choices to the reader's computer as a text file or maybe have a "Print" button on the movieclip showing the choices that would print just that movieclip. The database we have wouldn't really be suitable because it's set up to simply show which were chosen and which not, and the names of the submissions and choices are variables that don't really mean anything except to us when we put it all in an excel file.

I have some scrolling content (info). I've also made my own scroll bar.I want the scrollBar dragger to be positioned in relation to the info._y as the user scrolls info.I have created two vars: one that worsk out where info._y is as a percentage and the other that works out where the scroll._y dragger should be as a percentage...
Actionscript Code:
var scrollBarPercent = Math.round(scrollBar.dragger._y / [code]........
also onMouseWheel working too.I need a small bit of code that takes the % of info._y and moves the scrollBar dragger to the same % but in relation to the Stage.height...so if projectGalleryPercent = 50%, make dragger._y 50% of Stage.height using scrollBarPercent.

I have a Flex client application. I need a clean up function to run in Flex when the user closes the browser. I found the following solution on the net, but it only works half-way for me. How could I fix it?CustomEvent triggered, but not executed. >> EventHandler for CustomEvent.SEND_EVENTS is defined by a Mate EventMap. All the handler does is to call an HTTPServiceInvoker. In debug console, I'm able to see the handler and HTTPServiceInvoker being triggered, but neither the resultHandlers nor the faultHandlers were called. I know this event handler has no problem because when I dispatch the same CustomEvent.SEND_EVENTS in a button click handler, it behaves exactly as I expected)Browser seems to wait for cleanUp function to complete before it closes. (all traces were printed before browser closes down)
Code
I added the following into the index.template.html
window.onbeforeunload = clean_up;
[code].....

So I'm building a web application, and in part of the application the user should choose an XviD (.avi) video file from his machine, to be played in the browser (without uploading it). I decided to use Flash for this.
Now I have two questions about this:
Which Flash video player is free to use and capable of doing this? How should I let the user choose a video file, and how can I link the Flash video player to the file?

I would like to find out if there is a way for a message to pop up on my website if the user has Flash Player version lower than 10.1. If the version 10.1 or higher (in the future) no message should come up. The message should prompt a user to update to the Flash Player version 10.1. My entire site is in Flash and I am using AS3. So I am guessing I should implement an AS3 code on the first frame of the script layer. Does anyone know what would be this code?

recently, i upgraded to Flex Hero 4.5 and created a new workspace. Then, i imported a project from the former workspace and started working. when i tried to upload the project from the new workspace to codereview, i got the error message: could not guess version control system. Are you in a working copy directory? How does one resolve this issue? I have read somewhere that i need to checkout my svn but i thought that you only checkout when you want to get a folder/file from the svn.

I want to know the type and version the browser that the user is running from within my Flex 4 application. I know I can get that information by using ExternalInterface to call Javascript. I know I can get that information from the server. I'm looking for a way to get that information directly from actionscript. I mean, isn't there a global variable or something that keeps this information?

I updated the flash library XML/SWF (chart library) to the latest version on my web application but the users still see the charts with the old library which is saved in there browser cache.How can I force the browsers of my users to download the latest version of the SWF files.I can't add a parameter at the end of the SWF file like : charts.swf?v=1234.
If I do that I get an error because the chart library load dynamically other SWF files of the library. The charts.swf file will be the new version but the other files will still be from the older version and I will get an error...

This might be a simple question, but I'll ask it anyways. I know when I update my flash website I have to clear the cache to view the changes. Now, will all users have to do that to see the new changes, or will the browser eventually detect changes and download the new version?

I put a swf file on a website, then I made some changes and replace the old version. However, some browsers seem to have some kind of cache to remember the last swf file, they only show the old version instead of the new one. What can I do to stop the browser caching the old version?

I recently came across interesting banner that said something "You've been wasting time online for 4:30h do something useful finally, click here"What grabbed my attention, was that this flash banner actually got the time right, I logged in 4:30h ago. How did the flash know that? Is there a function that communicates with browser and checks how long it's been on? Javascript maybe? Same way it accesses getTime, getDate etc.
