ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash - Stop The Browser Caching The Old Version?
Oct 28, 2010
I put a swf file on a website, then I made some changes and replace the old version. However, some browsers seem to have some kind of cache to remember the last swf file, they only show the old version instead of the new one. What can I do to stop the browser caching the old version?

I have a Flash file that is linked to 14 xml files using the E4X method. To keep the network activity to a minimum, I have it set up so that the xml files don't load until the relevant button is clicked (rather than have them all load at the beginning). I've been told I could further reduce network activity by using something called browser caching. There seem to be methods called "conditional HTTP" and "304 caching" but I can't really find a coherent tutorial on how to add this to the code.

I've got a parent SWF that loads in a couple child SWFs. Even though my browser cache is cleared -- it's disabled, in fact -- reloading, or even restarting, the browser doesn't trigger the newest version of the child SWFs to load into the parent SWF. I can even delete the SWF off the FTP server, and it still gives me the last version that was up there.
What's caching the child SWFs, and how do I force them to refresh on my end? I'm not too concerned about the end user, because once the site development is over, the SWF files won't change very often. (They're all loading in XML files that have the cache disabled via PHP cache control and expires headers.)
I'm primarily using Firefox on PC and Mac, but it seems to do the same thing on IE/PC and Safari/Mac. The PC is using my ISP's DNS, and the Mac is using OpenDNS... not sure if that has anything to do with it. The site is hosted on Rackspace Cloud.

Use this information wisely my friend
i came across this post by lostinbeta to stop cacheing, but the link for the one to stop cacheing files loaded through loadMovie and loadVars doesn't work. know how to get to it, or what the as was?

I'm loading an external XML file when in the Flash development environment. ActionScript 3.0 (CS3) accesses the XML file using URLLoader. Everything is fine until I have to make changes to the XML file. When testing the Flash application while in the development environment, it does not see the changes I made to the XML file, because the URLLoader is somehow caching the results. Thus, the XML file looks exactly the same. This is very frustrating. Is there any way I can blow out this cache so that URLLoader is forced to load the XML file? Currently, I either have to re-start the Flash environment or change the name of the XML file.

I want to know the type and version the browser that the user is running from within my Flex 4 application. I know I can get that information by using ExternalInterface to call Javascript. I know I can get that information from the server. I'm looking for a way to get that information directly from actionscript. I mean, isn't there a global variable or something that keeps this information?

I updated the flash library XML/SWF (chart library) to the latest version on my web application but the users still see the charts with the old library which is saved in there browser cache.How can I force the browsers of my users to download the latest version of the SWF files.I can't add a parameter at the end of the SWF file like : charts.swf?v=1234.
If I do that I get an error because the chart library load dynamically other SWF files of the library. The charts.swf file will be the new version but the other files will still be from the older version and I will get an error...

This might be a simple question, but I'll ask it anyways. I know when I update my flash website I have to clear the cache to view the changes. Now, will all users have to do that to see the new changes, or will the browser eventually detect changes and download the new version?

I came across a website recently that outputs a whole bunch of user info: IP, browser, OS, flash version, javascript, etc in a very easy to use format. It was specifically designed for remote support, in order to determine user operating environment. However, I cant recall the name of the website.

I have a Flash application that sends a getURL request for an image file every 60 seconds.
This works fine in all browsers except IE9 with Internet Option set to automatically check for newer versions of stored pages. I setup Charles proxy (http://xk72.com) to watch the requests being sent by my flash app and confirmed that the request is being surpressed by IE9 when the setting is set to Auto, but works fine if I change the setting to check everytime I visit the webpage. This, however, is not an option! I need this to work in all browsers regardless of how the options are set.
Even if I do a page refresh (F5), the ASP page does not reload. The only way to get it to reload is close the browser and restart it.
I have tried adding content headers to disable caching but it does not appear to work.
For Example, here is my request headers:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date Sun, 02 Oct 2011 23:58:31 GMT
Server Microsoft-IIS/6.0
X-Powered-By ASP.NET
Expires Tue, 09 Nov 2010 14:59:39 GMT
Cache-control no-cache
max-age 0
Content-Length 9691
Content-Type text/html
Set-Cookie ASPSESSIONIDACQBSACA=ECJPCLHADMFBDLCBHLJFPBPH; path=/
Cache-control private
I have read the Microsoft blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2010/07/14/caching-improvements-in-internet-explorer-9.aspx) which states that if I add the content headers, the browser should respect my request, but it obviously does not.
I don't think this is a Flash issue since the html page that holds the Flash object will not even reload.

I need a way to stop XML files from caching. I have tried the xmlfile.load(file.xml?uniq=somerandomnumber) method, and it doesn't seem to be curing the problem. I understand that this can be stopped with PHP, however, I cannot use PHP for this task.XML caching is not a problem locally, only online, from the browsers, I cannot use any browser addons either as this file will be displayed to a vast audience and I can't expect anyone to;
a) get an add on
b) clear their cache everytime they want to see the file.

Is there a way to check if the user has my site cached so it can tell my preloader not to run?Or is there an easier way to check this? I have a preloader, but once it hits 100% it makes a mess. It's not all that appealing. It works if you see it loading, but just to see the mess at the end is not aesthetically pleasing.Is there a way to have the Flash movie say, "Oh. You've already got this loaded? Skip animation." ?

I have the following problem, I have a flex application that works as a frontend in a client-server-application. In my application I have two sliders and a chart that moves when I drag the sliders, now when I have the following positions
slider 1: 10
slider 2: 20
a request is sent to the server and the response back to my flash. When I now change the sliders to
slider 1: 10
slider 2: 30
another request is sent to the server, because we have changed the position of slider 2. When I now turn the sliders again to the first position.
slider 1: 10
slider 2: 20
no request is sent to the server and the chart is moved correctly because the flash seems to know what he will receive, I think the application has cached the result. This effect only works when I open the flash application in the flash player. When I open it in the browser every slider position leeds to another request to the server. Is there a way to enable the caching also when I open it in the browser?

I would like to take advantage of Adobe's Runtime Shared Library system for swc's, but I'm not sure how it ACTUALLY works, like the programming behind it. I understand that it allows you to load SWCs at runtime, but how does it do that?
I'm asking because I would like to try to mimic something like the Signed RSL "swz" system Adobe uses to cache the Flex Framework into the Flash Player, so if you ever visit a site that downloads the Flex framework for some flash website, then the next time, and forevermore, you don't have to download it again.
I can't do this because I'm using my own version of the Flex SDK from the Sandbox, and I have like 5 other swc's I'm using (Mate, RestfulX, etc.). I would like to be able to cache these things permanently, and only have them re-download them if they change.
How do I do that, or what should I read, other than the Adobe RSL docs and such? Can I use javascript or ruby to do this?

I have tried various codes (probably wrongly) and read different posts and failed to achieve what I am after. So to cut going round in circles I have just made a simple test folder. There are 3 things I am trying to achieve so that latest files are loaded instead of browser cached versions.
Everything is linked properly in the TEST folder (apart from the code to get latest non cached version)
You can download the TEST.zip folder (73KB) here- [URL] It's completely safe to download and please ignore the annoying pop up ads. I signed up for free service hence the ads.
The three things I want to achieve-
In the TEST.zip folder start with index.html.
1- There you will see >Enter Button< and >portfolio.pdf< button. Nothing will change on index.html page but the portfolio pdf will be regularly updated. So I want the >portfolio.pdf< to fetch the latest pdf always. I assume the code will go on the >portfolir.pdf< button?
2- >Enter Button< will take us to master.html page which contains master.swf. Master.html is only a container but master.swf will be regularly updated and needs to always load the latest master.swf version.
3- Load image.swf button will load image.swf. I want the button to load the latest image.swf file always.

I am writing a type of mail form in AS2 of Flash CS4. I collect two variables (nameCli and messageCli) I setup a "sending button" to appear only when there is a minimum of characters (2) under nameCli AND a minimum of 10 characters in messageCli. When that button is pressed I POST these two vars tru email_lv to email2.php. I do this check to be absolutely sure that these vars have contents.
It works and tests well on several computers (PCs) under XP, Vista and 7.
I haven't tested on a Mac
Under IE and Firefox 3.0.xx
I get the email with the correct values.
The problem: somehow, now and then I get (and worse, my client, to whom I wrote this app, gets) an "empty" email. That is, the subject of these emails are: "Request from" and blank. No name. The message is also blank. Since I know, with no doubt that these vars have content, otherwise the send button wouldn't come up, I am puzzled. I have no idea of what OS or Browsers these users have. Would be possible that some browsers would "block" the vars sent via POST?
email_lv.sendAndLoad("email2.php",dummy_lv, "POST");
email2.php is:
<?php
$to = 'any@whomever.com';$to2 = 'another@whomever.com';
$subject= 'Request from ' . $_POST["nameCli"];
$message = $_POST["messageCli"];
$headers = 'From: WebSite@clientserver.com'. "
" . 'Reply-To: doNOTreply@clientserver.com'. "
" . 'X-M ailer: PHP/'.phpversion() ." ";
mail($to, $subject, $message, $headers);mail($to2, $subject, $message, $headers);
?>

Essentially, I have flash content that scrolls on mouse wheel. It works fine, unless there is other content in the browser such that the browser's scrollbar is enabled - when that is the case, both the browser window AND my SWF scroll on mouse wheel. Is there any way to correct this behavior?
Similar question asked here:
disable mouse wheel scrolling while cursor over flex app?
which references the solution blogged about here:
[URL]
But the solution does not work on all browsers! While it works on some Windows browsers, it doesn't work at all on Mac OS X - it registers mouse wheel events in Firefox, but they are not getting fired at all in Chrome and Safari.
Now I know that (per the official Adobe InteractiveObject docs) mouse wheel is supposedly only supported on Windows systems, but the event is still fired by default on Mac OS X. Is this simultaneous scroll bug the reason it is not supported?
Edit: adding more info on above solution...
Note that the above solution basically uses ExternalInterface to send the following JavaScript to the "eval" function:
var browserScrolling;
function allowBrowserScroll(value) {
browserScrolling = value;
[Code]....
