Linux :: Download Bandwidth Difference In Operating Systems?

Jan 19, 2010

I've recently discovered an interesting thing. I've made my own Speedmeter using Flash CS4 and ActionScript 3.0. The Download side is based on downloading 2 Mp3 noise files. Using the built-in method getBytesLoaded() and a simple math it's easy to calculate actual connection speed. Actual speed is evaluated every second.

It works pretty good and the actual and average speed is very accurate under Windows. But when I've tried this under Ubuntu the actual speed results are different--and by different I mean that my connection from ISP is 5 Mbit/s and it sometimes shows like 7 or 8 Mbit/s. But the average speed seems to be good.

What causes this strange behaviour? Does Ubuntu have some kind of download cacheing thing?

ActionScript 3.0 :: FLV In CS3 - CD Doesn't Work On Particular Operating Systems

Nov 9, 2009

I'm having some problems with this Flash Cd I've made. The project is compiled of activities and videos. There are several videos in a row and they all load as external swfs. The third video freezes about mid-way through, but sometimes it doesn't - and then it's the other videos that freeze and are really jittery. Apparently the CD doesn't work on particular operating systems... But shouldn't that just be their hardware? The exe and swf's are all flash player 9. Even when I run the project locally it freezes. What's going on? How can I fix this?

Media Server :: Upgrading FMS Software On Many Linux Systems?

Sep 9, 2011

We have several systems, inside and outside (development, test and production), that we need to upgrade FMS on  Over time, I have found the process utterly cumbersome, prone to errors and time consuming... and outright annoying therefore. The permissions are never consistent, usually insecure (tmp and other directories world writable), and so onI wonder if anyone here has come up with a nifty way to work around this. For example, our setup is pretty uniform, so it's really unnecessary to do an interactive install all the time -- I could of course strip down the installFMS script, but I don't want to conflict with future changes

Flash To Detect User's Bandwidth / Depending Size Of Bandwidth / Stop Loading / Continue With Load?

Is there a way for flash to detect a user's bandwidth, and depending the size of bandwidth, stop loading, or continue with the load? Now that I'm thinking about it, this would probably be a javascript detection script and if the bandwidth is high, load .swf, if not load a .jpg?

Flash - Float And Math Precision On Different Systems?

Jan 31, 2011

I want to implement a gameplay recording feature in a project, which would only record player input and seed of the RNG at the beginning of the level. Then I could take such record and play it on my computer in order to test it for validity.I'm only concerned with some numerical differences which might appear between different Flash Player version, Operating Systems or CPUs (or whatever else that might be affected). The project would be written for Flash Player 10.0.0+. What stuff I am concerned with:

[code]...

I won't be using stuff like hitTest, getObjectsUnderPoint, hitTestPoint, getBounds and so on, all collisions will be geometrical. So, are there any chances that using any of the pointed things above will yield different results on different systems? If so, what can I do to avoid them?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Nested Coordinate Systems / How Do They Work?

May 6, 2011

I'm creating an interactive map in Flash. The stage size is 800 x 600. To this stage I am adding a large (zoomed-in) map in which I want to display many points. The large map is 4000 x 3000. This map is adding correctly but I experience trouble when I try to add the points to the map. I want to add these points directly onto this large map and I want them to move with it when it pans. Unfortunately, when I add the points their coordinates are read relative to the stage rather than relative to the large map MovieClip. The complication is that the large map is added to the stage at a different location dependent on where the smaller map is clicked by the user. The Question: How do I get flash to add these points relative to the large map's coordinate system rather than the stage's?

What I have tried: globalToLocal/ localToGlobal functions are fine for tracing but don't seem to give me a useable result Setting the coordinates of a Point to the result of this function to give the local origin obviously doesn't work.[code]

Professional :: Operating Buttons Within A Movie Clip?

Apr 20, 2011

I am building a website in flash for a design class (emphasis on design, nothing taught with actionscript)

I need help trying to figure out the actionscript for allowing buttons inside a movie clip symbol to navigate pages at the parent/root/main timeline level.

With this site I have the mainMenu as a Movie Clip symbol and have the menu items populate with animation inside the movie clip.  I need these buttons when pressed to navigate to different parts of the site that are controlled on the main level of the site (outside of the movie clip the buttons reside in).

I have given the buttons instance names, btnDining in the movie clip symbol.  The movie clip symbol is call mainMenu.  In the main level, I have labels for the different states/pages I want the website to have (dining, accommodations, etc)

[Code]...

I don't know if it is best to run the code from inside the movie clip symbol and call the different view on the main stage/level of the flash or if I try to run from the main stage/level and reference the buttons inside the movie clip symbol.

Please help me figure this out, I am trying to go a little above and beyond on this project.  I have been struggling on this for days and I have looked at tutorials, books I have on actionscript, etc.

Actionscript 3 :: Operating System Tooltip In Flash?

Jan 31, 2011

How do you use the operating system's tooltip utility in Flash with Actionscript 3? An analogous invokation of the OS tooltip is in HTML's anchor tag:

<a href="foo.html" title="awesome website">click</a>

I don't want to draw my own custom tooltip because (A) it will look inconsistent across operating systems, (B) long tooltips wouldn't be able to float out of the SWF, and (C) it takes time to program (whether to align left or right depending on how close you are to a boundary).

ActionScript 3.0 :: Recognize Operating System / Amp Call Appropriate File)?

Dec 17, 2008

I'm using Flash CS3 to create a graphical interface with multiple buttons--each of which opens a different linked file. The interface and linked files will all be included on a memory stick given out to people. The code below works perfectly for calling up a .wmv file (from a folder in the root drive called "linked_files")when a button is clicked. But my question is this: Is there a way for AS3 to recognize whether a computer is
running Windows (in which case it would open the .wmv) or Mac OS (in which case it would open a .mov instead)? I need to do the same thing with a couple of .exe files.Obviously Mac won't read them, in which case I need an appropriate alternative to open.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Recent Socket Data Transfer Performance Decreased On Macintosh Systems?

Feb 1, 2012

I'm using a .swf to connect to a socket and stream data as fast as possible for 60 seconds to measure connectivity speed. In other words a speed test.In the past say month or two, I've found Macintosh systems 10.5 and higher experience a significant slow down, In testing I see my socket connect and reach about 2.5Mbps - 3.5Mbps and literally stick as though the .swf was throttling the connection.

This 'problem' is random and appears to come and go. I've tested this in Chrome,Firefox and Safari with all the same results.Using the exact same test on any Windows or Linux OS works totally fine.Admittedly I'm an ActionScript novice however the code I'm using is below and has worked for some time up until recently.

ActionScript Code:
var s:Socket;
var Tbytes:Number = 0;
function connectToSocket():void{

Javascript :: Modify Link Target Within PDF Based On Operating System

Jun 28, 2011

We have an "application" consisting of a large number of PDF files that link to each other.

Some of the PDF files have links that must be a web URL when running on a PC (or a Mac) but need to open a specific application when running on an iPad.

When not on the iPad, the links look like "http://10.85.1.102".

When on the iPad, they look like "netcam4://2" - which opens the NetCam4 application with camera 2 selected.

NOTE: this is already working but we have to create two versions of the PDF and it would be much better to have only one.

Is there a way using JavaScript (or ActionScript or whatever) for the PDF to determine in which OS it is being displayed and modify the link appropriately?

We don't care if this decision is made when loading the PDF or when the link is clicked.

By the way, so far we have found that GoodReader on the iPad is the only PDF viewer that will properly follow links - including those to the NetCam4 app.

Actionscript 3 :: Operating On Objects Using Flash That Were Created Manually By A Designer In The Timeline

Jul 25, 2011

I was trying to build an application where a designer has created content on the timeline as a sequence of key frames. Each key frame is completely different. When the application is started I choose one of the frames, move the play head to that frame and stop (using gotoAndStop). Next, by referring to symbols in the key frame by name, I use AS3 to allow drag and drop, and I also do some programmatic movement.

The problem is that when I move to a different key frame on the timeline using gotoAndStop, the symbols that were touched by AS3 in the previous frame, even if they are not referenced by the designer's key frame, show up on the stage. It is as though any DisplayObject that I touch with AS3 becomes divorced from the timeline.

how to programatically work with timeline (MovieClip) content that was manually created by a designer. This just seems like it should be a really common use case. It seems that about the only thing I can do safely with the timeline is to move the play head and respond to events (if I don't change the state of DisplayObjects in the timeline). Also, is there any good documentation on how objects get allocated and destroyed when the timeline plays?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Download A File To The PC Through The Normal Browser Download Manager?

Jul 1, 2010

So I basically have used the fileReference class to allow the user to download a determined file if he wants to.

I use the file.download(URL) function and it works well.

However, the file is downloaded and saved to the hard drive using only the flash player. The browser is not aware of the download, and thus, if I want to show the progress of the download I'd have to make some progress bar myself. I know how to do it, but it would become really tedious and take too much UI space.

Isn't there a damn way in Flash to "send" a determined file to the browser so that it prompts the user to download it? It's an image file, so navigateToURL doesn't cut it since it will just display the image, both if I use a new tab or the current one.

Flash :: Download Multible Files With JavaScript(one Download)?

Feb 22, 2011

I generate a HTML page with VB.Net which stores several pinks to files. These links are formatted with JavaScript looking like the Windows-Explorer with folders and files. The problem: There are only download links for the files, not for Folders. A folder can contain Subfolders ,a List of Files or a combination of both. So if I want to download a folder, I have to click manually on every file-link. I have not the possibility to insert PHP or another Server-side language. my question now is: Is there a client side way to Download them by click on a Folder? I prefer Javascript but If it isn't possible Flash will be ok also.
