ActionScript 1/2 :: Count The Number Of Characters In A Line Of Text?
Apr 18, 2011
I have a text field that has 2 lines for visible text. I then pass it a string to display but the string might be to long to display all of the string. My problem is that I want to count how many characters that are NOT visible in the text field. The text field has to stay the fixed size and cannot change

If I load a txt file into my flash movie using the following...
var myTextLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
myTextLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoaded);
function onLoaded(e:Event):void {
[Code]....
I get my text imported and it splits it every time the letter 'a' is found. That's fine.
How would I go about counting the number of times that 'a' or 'and' (for example) featured in the text?

I have a dynamic text field that reads the text from a XML file. And what I want to do is simply count the amount of characters being in that text field.
I've tried:
trace (myTextArea.length);
trace(myTextArea.text.length);
and I get this"Undefined" crap =/.
And I'm using that code in a onEnterFrame function so it's not that the XML is late loaded into flash or something...

I made a scrollbar, but now I have a problem, need to read the number of lines of Dynamic text field and if it is greater than x show the scrollbar and hide if is less. Like this:
if(text.instance>7){
scrollbar._visible = true;
}
else{
scrollbar._visible = false;
}
My problem is how do I count the total lines of dynamic text field after load a external text.

I need to count the number of lines that exists in a txt file, from wich I load some content. I think I need to escape the content of the txt to be able to read the "/n", to count them and to have them displayed as variable (for example t_linenumber=...?)

I can't seem to figure out the .numLines property. I've tried calling it on a TextField that was created dynamically. The TextField has multiline set to true and wordWrap also set to true. Any clue why it would consistantly report the number 1? It's being called in a trace statement after the htmlText is set to a string from a xml file.

Is there a way to restrict the number of characters in the Flex Rich Text Editor? I guess there should be, since it's possible in a textarea. So, if I could get hold of the textarea contained in the rich text editor, I would be able to do it

I need to replace multiple contiguous new line/line feed characters in flex with a single new line character.
Example:
The string
"My name is blah blah
My name is blah
"
Should be converted to
"My name is blah blah
My name is blah
"
Hope the example makes it easier to understand.
I am using a component to render it.
I guess using regex would be the easiest way to do this, but still it would be great if people can point me out to references/examples to get this done with ease.
I am using flex 4.5.

I need to have a Text Area With Line Numbers, & once the Text File is Imported to the Text Area.. the user must be able to select the line numbers & see the filtered output.
I have implemented the same with Numeric steppers. I am in search of an enhanced component.
are there better Advanced Components for Textarea ? Any Advanced Textarea component with built-in Search/Replace/Filter Capabilities ?

I am creating a simple image viewer using AS3 and getting image URLs from flashVars in the HTML. I want to use an if argument to have it perform one function if there is only one flashVar and another if there are more.
I have it reading the flashVars fine and can write if statments all day long, the trouble I am having is counting the number of flashVars being passed from the HTML. here is a real dumbed down version of what I am trying to do (which doesnt work because I can not figure out the correct process to follow):
[as]
var numberOfVars:Number = 0; // to store the number of flashVars
var paramObj:Object = LoaderInfo(this.root.loaderInfo).parameters; //get the flashVars
[Code].....

I'm using the PopUpManager to bring a bunch of event windows up.I want to make it so that only one window can be open at a time, but I don't see anywhere in the code that tracks open windows to set up a conditional. I guess it just creates the windows and then sets them free?Thinking about a windowCount variable that increments when I add a window and decrements when I remove one, but since the PopupManager is called in different classes I'd have to start throwing events all over the place. I can do that, but I'm wondering if there's a more straightforward method?
