way programmically in flash to detect the edges of imported artwork (artwork that has transparent background)? I am hoping to build something that detects the edges (or boundaries) of artwork and then place other objects around those boundaries. (so they dont touch too much or overlap).

I have been trying to figure out a good strategy to perform a bitmap crop using Actionscript3. For example: I have a picture of a car and I want to crop out the car from the image alone and feather the edges so that they do not look jagged.
I am a flash noob and have only been using it for a couple of weeks. I've tried a couple of options and here is the last one that I have come up with it: I place red dots on stage that are draggable so that you can outline the object you want to crop and the dots are the bounds for a gradientFill that is used as the bitmap's mask. (I am using a radial gradient ... so the results are far from what I want, since the car is not an oval).

1) How can I fade just the edges of this custom-shaped fill outlined by the red dots?
2) I want to save the image out to a file once it's cropped. What strategy would be better for doing this using a BitmapFill or a GradientFill as a Mask (If it's possible with both)?
3) I may be using this strategy to crop faces later on.. anyone know of any good face detection APIs for as3? (also edge detection APIs)
Recently a client of mine decides he wanted rounded edges for his page vs. the typical square edges. This was after the initial design and at the point where it is almost complete.I told the client that in order to do this we would have to go to a full Flash web page meaning a full browser Flash page (everything is already flash).Now I told him that we could do this but because it was a new design and as you know that there is much involved in doing something like this i.e. all the paths will have to be changed because it will have to reside inside a mc etc.if there is an actual way to make the stage rounded only for future knowledge.I know I can make a round edge square or rectangle but it still has square edges at outer edge of the stage.

The issue is that when I use this code with wmode=transparent or wmode=opaque the MOUSE_LEAVE event is not detected when the MOUSE_UP event occurs off the stage. Is there a way to detect the MOUSE_LEAVE event when wmode is transparent or opaque? OR Is there a way to detect that the wmode is set to transparent or opaque so that a work-around may be implemented?
I'm working on a flash project that incorporates a lot of artwork done in Illustrator CS4. I've been copy-pasting directly from Illustrator into Flash, and I add some animations as well. Final file is going to be a one single swf file which will be a part of UI for an application and .net will be the core for this. But now flash becomes unusable slow to respond for actions. My machine is a fast i7 with 6gb of RAM, so I don't think that's the issue. We are going to use this file with dual core atom processors. Does anyone have ideas for alternative importing techniques, optimizations within illustrator, anything at all that will make this more manageable?
View 1 RepliesI have produced some vector artwork in illustrator for use inside a Flash Project. When I import the artwork into Flash the importer appears to place all of the element into many nested groups and creates folders in my library. Is there a way to import the graphics from illustrator as flat shapes rather than these nested groups?
Currently I am importing into Flash and having to go into each group and cut the shapes out and paste them into an empty MovieClip which is very time consuming.
Is it possible these days to dynamically load in vector artwork to flash?
View 6 RepliesI've been thinking about flash and html5 and though each of them can draw circles, rectangles, curves, and do things with images, doesn't it really come down to the artwork? Game play aside (I know ugly games can be fun), all the talk about which looks best canvas or flash or something else, kind of moot? Don't the great games, graphically speaking, have great artwork and modeling so that as long as the engine can handle it, the programming anything other than events associated with those models and artwork doesn't matter? I'm watching my kid play Frontiersville on Facebook and I'm thinking, I could program those events but it's the artwork that's grabbing people and good gameplay keeps them. In the end does the platform really matter for games?
View 2 RepliesI'm working on a project where I need to make a picture of a building fade darker on mouse over, while sections of the building get brighter. The sections rise up when you hover over them and will load a pdf when you click.
Everything works fine so far except that when the mouse goes over the edges of the buttons the background and the buttons fade back in and out again.
I only want them to fade out when the mouse leaves the stage.

I'm having some trouble with my Flash Professional CS5.5. When I'm doing freehand drawing it shows the edges around every stroke I make. I have tried going to the menu, View -> Hide Edges and also pressing Ctrl+H. It does make the edges go away from the most recent stroke, but at the next stroke it reappears. Flash also started to crash from time to time, kinda randomly starting with not showing me the layers and then crashing completely giving me an error message talking about some file. This started about the same time as the edge thing. How to reset the settings? (I'm doing simple frame by frame animations in a ActionScript 3.0 document, if it's of any importance).

2. What about for graphics that will be converted into buttons in Flash? Does it matter if they are Graphics or Movie Clips in Illustrator?
I've got a project that heavily utilizes the new 3d artwork tools in Flash CS4. My question is has anyone done any tests to see if Flash is quicker with raster or vector graphics? My SWF really bogs down on slower machines.
View 2 Replieswhen I inserted the code some of the symbols on stage disappeared. This did not surprise me because I did not understand the code, but then when I deleted the code it did not revert back. I dismantled the frame and dragged new symbols on stage and I still could not see them when I tested the movie. Checked to see if any code was written anywhere else but could not find any. The only code I had was a gotoAndStop which I was using simply to view that specific frame. when I removed the gotoAndStop finally the images appeared. If I placed a stop on the frame I wanted to view, then it worked fine but a gotoAndStop did not work as I was left with a white screen. Finally I had to recreate everything in a new document and then the gotoAndStop worked, but I have noticed that if I drag certain components on stage then I have a similar disappearing act.

I also want to add a few other data fields, I would like when you click on the song title to play the audio track, but also show the Artist name, the song title, the artist record label, a link to the artists website and a short section for comments from the artist about the song. I'm trying to draw PNGs onto BitmapData that is transparent.
I create my BitmapData like this (using ARGB for the color):
new BitmapData(width, height, true, 0x00000000);
And clean it by using the same ARGB value:
bitmapData.fillRect(bitmapData.rect, 0x00000000);
When I use copyPixels() to draw graphics onto the cleaned BitmapData, I get this result:
If I don't use ARGB for the BitmapData color, it works fine:
But I have to specify a solid fillColor, meaning I can't render what's behind the Bitmap.
How can I make my BitmapData transparent, but not have the above occur?
I'm making some elearning courses and we are trying to combine semi-automation with the ability to place artwork and content on the timeline. Basically we have a series of small tasks -- read this, click this button, see the result, and so on. We have a "highlight" area component that indicates the area a user is to click. Currently that component dispatches and event from the instance when it is clicked and the main timeline is listening for the event and then moves them ahead to the next task when they have clicked properly.
So the following code:

And the handleClick function and removing the listener all has to be handled on the timeline. And for a given task there might be an intro animation and the click area component might not come in until the end. So where to put that code and how to automate it becomes tricky. So I first dug up AsBroadcaster and could use it sort of like Mouse or Key classes.

I am creating a map in flash cs4 with all the countries on it. I used photoshop for creating the map and separated countries. Now I imported all pngs in Flash and I want to give Mouse CLICK event and Mouse Hover on all pngs, but as the transparent pixels are overlapping the other states, it is getting difficult. So, I converted all pngs in movieclips and now then I broke up pngs. Now I want to delete all pixels having alpha 0 using eraser tool, as per the borders. And I have to do it manually for individual countries. So is there a way to remove transparent pixels from the bitmap data?
View 2 RepliesI am currently working on a flash website that has several flv videos on it. Since the website layout has a slight tilt, I have had to transform the videos to slightly tilt as well. The problem that I am having is that when I do this the image becomes very pixelated and the edges of the video become jagged. I have somewhat fixed the edges issue by making a mask around it but i really dont know how to make the resolution better, or what causes it to loose resolution when slightly transformed. The size of the videos is the same as encoded. All I do is tilt them upwards on the right side a bit.
View 1 RepliesI have two png's that kind of look like paint brush strokes. they have some transparency in them that lets the stage colour bleed through a bit.
I am adding two of these images to the stage in AS 3. One adds quite fine - looks as expected. The second one however doesn't have any transparency other than around its edges. What i mean is it looks more like GIF than a PNG. Rough around the edges, no transparency "inside" the image itself (where there should be)
i have tried re-creating the image (yes it IS a PNG) which did nothing. I ensured the library item is not being treated as a JPEG. I also even tried externally calling the PNG to see if that made a difference. Unfortunately it did not.
why this second PNG doesn't seem to have a transparency set?
I didnt see a place in preferences to keep edges hidden. I have some text that has a dotted line around it. I can hide it with hide edges, but as soon as I select them and let go, the edges come back. maybe their not edges since theyre dotted. maybe its flash telling me somethings not set up correctly? anyone?

Basically, I have a flv file within a movieClip, and I need the edges of the video to look feathered.
