ActionScript 2.0 :: Addressing MovieClips - Variables And File Paths
Sep 30, 2004
I am trying to make some way of addressing a movieclip but I want it to be able to change. I have a for loop which is creating a new movieclip instances until it is equal to or less than my arrays length. Well it makes all these and it names them test0 test1 test2 test3.. and so on. Now I am trying to write a loop that address all of them, the only problem is I dont know how to use a variable to address them, or some work around to do so.
on rollOver i want to dynamically pass a movieclips name to a function which controls that the movieclip should goto its frame named "over", but i cant get the adressing to work. if i trace the variable "name" in the example it gives me the moviename correctly. so i guess my syntax is wrong. the function doesnt work with the path variable either. i know this might be a stupid question. dont mind me, i'm a noob.
Is there (or what is the) best method to address duplicated movieclips? For example if you duplicate a number of movieclips (or attach or anything else) through a for loop and give them names like mc1, mc2, etc, how can you address them outside the loop? Especially if the number of times you duplicate the clips is read from a file which can change constantly. Example - an image gallery where you just add the files to your xml and they show up in the gallery.
I'm having a bit of a problem with this. I have a class- MiniMap which extends the MovieClip class.This class has a variable which is itself a movieClip, this movieClip is a small window which can be moved around on the map to select which portion of the miniMap will be shown in the bigger map.
How do I refer back a events on the class variables to effect the host class?
I have a variable in the _root called 'ordered'. I have another variable called 'total' inside a function called 'loadXML'. 'total' receives a number value from a node in a XML file correctly. I now want to transfer this value to the variable 'ordered' which, as I said, is in the _root. However, 'total' is restricted to the function and I can't access it from the variable in the _root. Neither can I transfer the value from the variable in function to the _root.ordered, since such a line targets the _root of the function itself.I guess this isn't too hard to solve, probably just a path issue, but I have a few rather large gaps in my knowledge of actionscripting.On the stage, there are three objects; a movieclip with the instance name 'clip', a movieclip with the instance name 'orderbox' and finally a dynamic text field with the instance name 'pos_txt'.[code]
Im a bit confused about the adressing of .swf-files loaded into levels of another .swf-file. The adressing seem to be absolute, ie. if a sub.swf (which is loaded into a super.swf from another location) uses some sort of adressing (for instance, loading an image), that adress must include the path from the super.swf.
Cant you change that somehow, so that sub.swf's can adress other stuff relatively to its own adress? Can you do that globally (so that relative adressing is used by every .swf)? Can you set it individually, so that adressing is relative only from the specified swf's?
I have a lot of library assets linked to external as3 classes. I would like to change the structure of the packages containing the linked classes, but if I do so, all links will get broken.
Is there any way to automatically or at least easily tell the FLA file where to get the new class files from? Could a FLA file be configured to read this sort of information from a configuration file?
Does anyone know if there is some kind of program that can convert the XML paths to Flash paths. Hmm...what I'm after is some little program that basically lets me open up an XML file, point on a node or attribute and the program will the flashpath to this node/attribute, where the path is something like: his.firstchild.childnode[2].attribute.jadajada
I can load variables into flash text fields but I can't use those variable in my action script. Heres what I'm trying to do. I have a top5.txt file that looks like this:&title1=L.A.M.B. FRAGRANCE&body1=National Geographic reminds us to stay Green - with a little fromNatalie Portmany Green
I stumbled upon the need to find out (inside Java code) which files are dynamically loaded by an SWF-file. Is there any possibility to get a list of paths of every object referenced inside? I tried out some libraries without proper documentation and gave up. Maybe there is an external tool which can be accessed by Java via command line?
I have been fighting with my issue of loading an xml file from flash for about 10 hours. When I run the swf on my desktop it works fine. If i access the file directly on my server it works fine as well in FireFox and Internet Explorer. When I run it from my portfolio www dot cspsolutions dot ca/portfolio(first portfolio item) and you run it in FireFox it displays the error:
Error #2044: Unhandled ioError:. text=Error #2032: Stream Error. URL: products.xml at ImageChanger() at ImageChanger_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()
I know that the path is correct because I uploaded the whole directory so the file structure should stay the same. To get a better understanding of the situation you can view the file at www dot cspsolutions dot ca/portfolio/imageChanger . It only raises the error in FireFox however the animation does not display in both browsers.
I created a really simple preloader, just something for people to look at while the external swf loads. The preloader works fine, but when it reaches 100 it doesn't kick into the external swf, which i thought i called, but I don't know why it isn't work. i tried to hard code the file name, because i can never get relavent file paths to work and it didn't work either.
Is it possible to pass file names from a running Flash application, which only purpose is to enable multiple-file-selection, to a JavaScript application which handles upload of all files to the server?I have examined various Flash upload solutions (like SWFUpload, Uploadify, etc.) and none of them meets my needs. I want an easy to implement solution (like Uploadify) which also lets me specify various parts of the HTTP request.
The reason I need this is because my upload form uses session cookies (for user authentication) and an CSRF token both passed to the server when uploading files.Is it technically possible to pass filenames (+ paths) to a JavaScript application which then handles the upload?
I'm trying to develop a site map, which draws a tick over the sections of my app that have been completed. I've figured out how to draw the tick and how to pass variables from root to the MovieClip that the function is in.
To make the tick appear only after an mc has been watched, I tried setting a variable equal to 1 ino the last frame of the MovieClip, and telling the function to run if that variable was 1.
I'm not getting compiler errors, but I'm also not getting the tick. And I'm definitely completing the Movie
Here's what I've got so far: In root
Code: var xcoord = 125; var ycoord = 300; var WaterComplete = 0; In WaterMovie
I have finally started with AS3 and flip-'eck its a different animal that AS2
I have a swf called login.swf and in it have declared the variables var total:uint=0; and loginState:Boolean=false
All my scripts for logging in sending/receiving variable from/to server scripts are all working!
So... when a user supplies a correct password another swf (userLogged.swf) is loaded (note: in AS3 this process is seriously different than in AS2) swf dont seem to be loaded 'into' another movieclip anymore... and this leads me to the puzzle!
How do I access variables declared in the project.swf, from within the userLogged.swf!
the old AS2 way = trace (_root.loginState);
or trace (_root.project.loginState)!
I am stumped by this new approach of AS3 of loading in other swf files. The _root. options is no longer available in AS3 (that much I've descovered, some tuts say use root. but I cannot get that to work)
trace (root.loginState) or
var userLoggedIn=root.loginState
gives me the error
1119: Access of possibly undefined property loginStatus through a reference with static type flash.displayisplayObject.
(Using AS3) I'm doing a simple grid layout of boxes (movieClips), i'm then trying to save their current position to each of the movieClips. So in AS2 i'd do something like ...
obj.origX = obj._x; obj.origY = obj._y;
but it's saying; 1119: Access of possibly undefined property targetX through a reference with static type flash.displayisplayObject. How can i add custom variables to movieClips?
I have several Movie Clips in the Library which I need to be able to load and bring up on the screen randomly.The code below shows how I can load one of these, but to get a proper control ideally I would like to load them all in to an array or numbered variables so that they can be called from a simple piece of code and actioned one at a time.
My movieclips can all be called something simple like mc1, mc2, mc3, mc4 etc to make things easier.These need to be referenced in to an array mcContainer[.....] or as mcContainer1, mcContainer2........ so that they can be called easily.I just need to know the simplest way to do this and how i reference them, I have tried several ways like ["mc"+i] etc and nothing seems to work.
I'm new to actionscript 3 and I'm trying to get a few simple things going, such as setting variables in other movieclips... So let's say I have an "apple" movieclip on the root/stage, and I want to access other variables on the root, or in other movieclips. How would I do that? In actionscript 2, I would use something like
_root.thisVar = 1; _parent.thisVar = 1; and with other movie clips I would use
I want to be able to add each clip to the stage using a function where the number is a variable that can be added to the "Add movieclip" statement.
For example:
var x:Number = 1; var "Clip" + x:"clip"+x = new "clip" + x();
so that the program inteprets the above as:
var Clip1:clip1 = new clip1(); addChild(Clip1);
This was the only way I could think of adding a movieclip to a stage. I am open to any other option. I hope this was clear. I don't have any code to post because I'm just trying to work through the logic of the program. Adding movieclips to the stage when the name of the movieclip has a variable in it, is the part I am stuck on.
I built my website on the main timeline with a fade in animation...stop(on the page) and a fade out animation. At the end of this fade out animation i would like it to call upon a variable to know what page to go to next.I am trying to tell my main timeline to gotoAndPlay a frame based off of a variable within a movieclip(about_mc this movieclip contains another movieclip which acts like a button(factsheet_mc)) that i have set in my main timeline.I set the variable with:
var buttonFrame; in the first frame of the main timeline
then within my movieclip i have another movieclip which tells my main timeline to play the out fade and remember a variable:
this.onRelease = function(){ --------"this" meaning the movieclip factsheet_mc------------ [code]........

I'm currently learning OOP through Sen's information here at Kirupa, and I've decided to try out his "creatures" exercise mentioned in his Best of Senocular thread...The situation is a random number of sprites are created, and they move around the stage, interacting. They all have a certain amount of "health," defined as a variable in a MovieClip prototype applied to the MC. When they hit, I want their health to go down a little bit, so how can I access a particular MC's "health" variable while I'm outside of the MC itself?
I've been building a web based order form and my client want the ability to add items (as many as you want) and for them to be totalled up. I've used Kirupas Scrollpane with Dynamic Mc's tutorial to add my products, but I can't seem to add them up! Each product adds up it's subtotal in the dynamically attached Mc and outputs the variable 'subtotal' In my root I have this function to call the subtotals, but I can't seem to get it to add up each of them to output a total...
