ActionScript 2.0 :: Can Properties Be Replaced By Variables

Apr 20, 2007

What I am trying to do is write a class that could function on the x axis, or y axis, so when an instance of the class is called, the axis is specified. For example:

Code:
Scroll:ScrollFunction = new ScrollFunction(_x, MC);
class ScrollFunction {
function ScrollFunction(axis, targetMC) {

[Code]....

That's a very simplified version, but you get the idea. This won't work though because although Flash recognizes 'axis' as being equal to '_x', it does not recognize 'axis' as a property.

All I want to know is if it is possible or not. I could, of course use an if statement, but that would mean I would have to have to write the function twice, once for each axis, which is what I want to avoid.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Using Variables In Properties?

Jun 8, 2009

I'm trying to craft a simple image gallery with 6 thumbnails on the left and a large image container on the right. I've assigned a MOUSE_OVER listener that executes the following function when activated:

Code:
function viewLargeImage(evt:MouseEvent):void {
var imageName:String = evt.target.name + "_large";
this.mc_tabRight.imageName.visible = true;
}

The instance names of the thumbnails are img1, img2, and so on, and their larger counterparts are img1_large, img2_large, and so on. When the MOUSE_OVER occurs, the larger version becomes visible. The gallery is within a movie clip (mc_tabRight; a tab that pulls out from the right side).So in my mind, the second line of the function should make visible the instance passed from the variable in the first line based on the rollover. I tested the code using trace("imageName"); and it returned the correct instance name, but when executed and the thumbnails rolled-over, it returns this error: TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.

The larger images are all present on the stage when the function is called. I'm sure I'm making some fundamental error here,

Actionscript 3 :: Is There Any Advantage To Using Properties Over Public Variables

Jun 14, 2011

This might be a very stupid question, but I have to ask it anyway. I am graduating in about a month and while studying, I have always been taught to use properties instead of public variables. So I started wondering what the advantage was and I must say that in some cases, I have no clue at all. Of course it is handy when some other logic needs to be executed when setting properties or getting properties, but is there any advantage to using properties when you are only getting/setting a variable? An example of what I mean is shown below (As3).

Actionscript 3 :: Unexpected Behavior Accessing Properties Of Script Variables

Nov 7, 2011

I tried to execute the following actionscript3 program and I am surprised of the result of the call to f() function. I was expecting that the result of f() was "1" or at least "undefined" but the "0" value does not makes any sense for me. I will be pleased to have a good explanation of this behavior if you have one, or to know if you consider this behavior as "normal". I want to precise that I'm studying the behavior of Action Script programs in order to understand how the AVM2 really works and therefore I am not asking equivalent code to do the same thing. As a consequence if you have other tricky examples I am also interested.

Flex :: Character Getting Replaced By Blank When Passed As Application Param?

Feb 22, 2011

I am passing a string param into flex application as FlashVars.The param sometime contains special characters, everything shows fine except + sign which gets replaced by blank when it reaches flex.Here is the scenario for eg.I have a local variable in JS that gets some values and for this example it can be taken as following

var testVar = "some_test_string_that_contains_+_character";

Then to my Flex object AC_FL_RunContent I pass "FlashVars","test="+testVar

In the flex code on Init of application I have written

var testValue:String = application.parameters["testVar"].toString();
Alert.show(testValue);

Now this shows fine except the + character gets replaced by blank. It doesnt happens with other characters like /,@$-_ but the + character.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Use Local Instance Variables Vs Attach New Properties To The Instance Object?

Mar 14, 2006

I am wrapping my brain around OOP in AS2. I am making two posts on two different subjects. My question here is: when should I use local instance variables, and when should I attach new properties to the instance object? (Feel free to correct my terminology.) Let's say I have a class for a scrolling background, which scrolls when I mouse over its edge. I want to put these values somewhere:

1) How wide is the border in which a mouseOver makes it scroll? This is basically a semi-constant I set it up once and keep it the same, unless the user changes it in an options menu to make the border wider or narrower. Call this scrollBorderWidth.

2) How fast is the background scrolling now? I want to track this so I can smoothly change the scroll speed over several frames. This is often changed. Call this scrollSpeed.

It seems I have two ways I can store and access these values and darned if I know which is better practice. METHOD A: Make them local variables in the class, so the scrolling background instance has them as local vars. I set them up thusly:

ActionScript 2.0 :: XML Photo Gallery - Replaced The Original Thumbs With New Thumbs It Got All Screwed Up?

Jul 24, 2006

I was working with the XML Photo Gallery Thumbnail Tutorial on this site: http:[url]....

And I modified it for my own usage, making it a vertical gallery instead, and had no problems until I came upon the thumbnail images. When I replaced the original thumbs with my new thumbs (that I sized based on width, as it is a vertical gallery) it got all screwed up. The images are of all different shapes. So when it loads up, some of them had huge gaps in between them, and others were even overlapping. So I fixed it by making the heights of all the images the same, resulting in a working thumb gallery, but now half my thumbs are cropped off by the mask. I'm looking for a way to fix it where I still have the same spacing between the images, and that they are all the same width, but can vary in their height. Here's the section of the code I am using:

function thumbNailScroller() {
// thumbnail code!
this.createEmptyMovieClip("tscroller", 1000);[code]....

I'm also trouble figuring something out from the same tutorial, that I want to change. The tutorial uses these "Next" and "Previous" buttons. On the far right hand side, the half-circle buttons are what I assigned this to, but I don't really want them to have that function. I would rather have them function just like how the mouse functions when it rolls over the thumb gallery, except they scroll the thumbs up and down when clicked.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Set Properties - Get Properties - Change An Mc Name Dynamically?

Is it possible to change an Mc Name dynamically? If you look at my FLA when you hit the top left red button you will get a trace of the mcName as "square". Now if you input a new mc Name on the right hand side, you will see it change on the left hand side. But i want to know why it doesnt remain as the new mc Name, it still goes back to square.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Trace The Properties Of An Object's Properties?

Jan 30, 2008

I forgot to put it in the title so I'll just place it here; I am using AS 2.0. I know that there are other ways to accomplish the goal that am after, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to access the properties of an object's properties?

Here is the code that I thought of, even though it doesn't work

var a:Object = new Object();
a.bproperty = 0; //lowerlevel properties
a.cproperty = 1; // lowerlevel properties

[Code].....

This really just boils down to how I am organizing the code(I have ideas on what do next, and i am 99% sure that I can get them to work), and if there is a way to dynamically access the properties of the objects properties, It will save me from creating yet another large block of code for my project. ActionScript :: Xml - Setting Object Properties From Other Object Properties?

Jun 25, 2010

i'm attempting to cast an object's property as an actual property of another object. here's my object variable: var propObj:Object = {prop:"width", width:50}; now i want to assign the property of a sprite using that object's properties. var sp:Sprite = new Sprite(); sp.(propObj.prop as Sprite.property) = propObj.width; now, i'm not even going to try that because i know the compiler will explode all up in my face. but you should be able to see what i'm trying to do. why i'm trying to do it is because i'm reading in an XML file with an undetermined list of usable properties for specific objects. so instead of writing something like a huge switch statement to evaluate whether the XML file has a value for that specific property, i'm trying to assign properties dynamically based on what's available in the XML file. if what i'm trying to do is possible, what's the best way to do it?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Load Data From Different Variables - The New Variables Come Back As Undefined?

Jun 15, 2010

I'm writing code that takes data from mysql that's processed by a PHP script. It's actually a bit bizarre, at least to me. Anyway, here's some basic AS3 code that's moving toward what I want to do:

var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
var urlRequest:URLRequest=new URLRequest("receive.php");
urlRequest.method=URLRequestMethod.GET;[code]....

For some reason, the statement "trace(evt.target.data);" produces a whole pile of garbled text before the actual stuff that it's supposed to show Because of problem #1, I've had to include a throwaway variable at the beginning, otherwise the first variable I try to pass into AS3 comes back as undefined. This causes errors when I run my flash movie in the IDE, but when I run it from the browser it doesn't seem to have any effect.But this is the strangest thing of all whenever I make any changes to the database (and subsequently try to load data from different variables), the new variables come back as undefined. For example, let's say that I add another entry to the database, and decide to load students 2, 3, and 4 instead of 1, 2, and 3. When I do that, any new data I've added comes back as undefined, even though when I view the PHP output in my browser, it looks just fine.

And now for the REALLY bizarre part: I'll copy that output, paste it into my PHP script as an echo statement, comment everything else out, and my flash movie runs fine. Even though the output from the PHP script is exactly the same, it gives me errors.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Array Variables, Variables Not Working Correctly?

There is a bird, and you control its upwards movement with a key. It has thrust, gravity, it works fine. The problem is I have a bunch of icicles that come at the bird that he is supposed to avoid. I tried this first with math random to use as an x coordinate and than move across the screen, but the icicles had the same x-coordinates sometimes. I tried does not equal(!=) but that doesn't work. I made an array and each number that came out of the array I assigned a different variable. This works fine. I put this variable into the x-coordinate such as mc.x=((n)*60)+480. I did this for five different icicles. All their differnt variables have a different value, and I put them into the same function for each individual video clip, but they still don't go to the right coordinate. Here is the test code just for the initial coordinate of each icicle before it moves...////////////////////////////Quote:
