ActionScript 2.0 :: Changing Behavior Based On Y, X Coordinates Over A Movie Clip With OnMouseMove?

I was thinking that it will be an easy task but something is not right. Here is what I am trying to do. I want to be able to run a function if the mouse is moved over certain areas of the movie clip on stage. Based on which area of the movie clip the mouse is moved I'd like to be able to trigger different behaviour. Below is the code which I was thinking shoud do it:

For some reason, the trace statement is ran always when the mouse moves regardless if it is over the movie clip or not. It also only shows the first trace statement. It is never chaged even if the mouse is in the different areas of the movie clip.

I'm new to action script and was wondering how to change the alpha of a movieclip from 0 to 100% gradually or instantly when the mouse is moved ( like the navigation bar on a media player) when the mouse is still i want the alpha to be at 0, i am totally new to actionscript but am familiar with code syntax.

Q1) The registration point of a created clip is top left - my question is how can I dynamically change it's registration point - say to center center?
(I am trying to attach a movie clip to a created clip and I wanted it to be centered inside the container - a related sub-question, how can I find the x-y coordinates of the attached movie clip within the created movie clip?)
Q2)When I tried to create two different movie clips, I found I had to create them at different depths, else the first would load and the second would not. Why would that be so? I'm on MX 2004 Pro.

I am developing a tool for analysis where you drag specific events onto a special wheel to analyze events based on time of day etc. I had a few users testing it and they asked for a save and load feature. I have done as much as I can at this point and am just growing confused. Can one of you experts take a look at my .fla and see what can be done...I think I am close but just can't figure it out. Also, if you can provide comments on cleaning up my code would be nice too.

I want to create another button on the main menu of my flash site. I want to take one of the existing buttons (which are set as movie clips) and modify it to show a different menu name and page link. BUT when I go into my library and "duplicate" my movie clip, change the instance name, drag it to the stage and attempt to modify it, the original changes as well. I need to keep the original the same and create a new one with the same code, frames, etc but with different static text. I keep going in circles

i've got 4 coodinates an need to fit a fit movie clip to them, so each corner of the movieclips is on one coordinate.The only thing i could find it tranforming it with a matrix and angles (see example), but these cant be the best solution for my problem to calculate all the angles etc.

what i am trying to do is create a game that works on the same bases as battle ships but the difference is that its just at a single grid size scale so basically you only have to hit 5 squares in the 8x8 square grid. The trouble i am having is that i have set it up as a movieclip and i cant seem to get it to same the positions on the side that i select on (named the players side) it works fine for the otherside and will hit the 'enemy squares' and you can win the game but never loose the game that the problem.

I am drawing a set of connected lines in a MC that is created using createEmptyMovieClip. The lines start at (0,0) within the MC and move into the negative x values when the lines move left. The problem I am having is when repositioning the MC. When I tell the MC to move to _x=0 and _y=0, it doesn't move to the stage's (0,0), it still hangs off the left side of the stage. The following image shows the MC positioned to (0,0) (note: the green is the stage):shouldn't the MC containing the drawn lines use its left-most point when being repositioned so that it doesn't hang off the left side of the stage?

Basically its an onPress event handler on a movie clip that attaches another movie to it when pressed.The problem is, I only want the movie clip to be attached once in the designated x,y coordinates, no matter how many times the main object is pressed. I'm essentially trying to write my own FreeTransform script, that allows users to resize the object.

I'm making a game where an airplane loads using attachMovie, with a randomly assigned y coordinate and a constant x. The airplane then moves across the screen. You hit another button, and a parachutist is loaded using attachMovie, with the coordinates being set equal to the current coordinates of the airplane. The parachutist loads but he doesn't load to the coordinates of the airplane. If I feed the parachutist numerical coordinates, he loads to those coordinates, but for some reason Flash seems to be completely ignoring my attempts to feed the plane's coordinates to the parachutist. Here's the relevant code, which is of course nested in an onEnterFrame function:

As I've said, the jumper loads, he just loads in the upper corner of the game, as if the plane's coordinates are ignored and Flash attaches jumper to the default coordinates of the program. If I try to attach the jumper to the using the coordinates of something that's not in motion, it works, so I'm wondering if this has something to do with the motion of the plane.

Is there a method to determine the stage coordinates of a movie clip?
I don't mean something like this:
stageX = mc.x + mc.parent.x + mc.parent.parent.x + ....
I would like to be able to determine the movie clip stage coordinates without knowing what are its parents and grandparents etc. The goal is to be able to place the movie clip on exact place on a stage, no matter what is the nesting structure.

changing the behavior of Key_down event. in every tutorial if for example you keep left arrow pressed you object will move to the left for i.e 5pix all the time,constant speed. can you change the key_down so it will only move once no matter how long the key is pressed, after you release it and press again it will only move one time again and so on

I (like many othes probably) am using a master flash movie (AS2) with a menu that loads external swf files into a container. It is working pretty well, but I'm running into a pretty nasty problem.
This particular external swf that I am loading has a menu made of images that scroll depending on the mouseposition. It is very similar to this: [URL]
Now, when running the swf on its own (not inside the master movie) it works 100%. BUT... seeing as I am going to load this into a master movie that is bigger (about 300px of menus to the left) I get problems with the positioning. I don't really know what the cause is but the imagemenu seems to think it has a bigger stage now and the images seem to fall behind my master-menu.
I have to find a way to restrict either the positioning of the images, or the mousemovement.
I tried fixing this by adding a square, the exact size of the external swf's dimensions. hit_mc

I'm working on a scrolling game for my multimedia class, and I want to be able to have the player choose the colour of their character. Rather than having three separate classes (which would result in having three copies of all the code), i wanted to know if I could set a hue value instead. Is there a way to have a pre-loader based on a single movie clip, instead of on the entire SWF size? This movie clip may have a single graphic, but the entire movie has a slideshow with more images to display...but rather than making my visitor wait for the entire site to download before they see anything, I'd like to have it so when that graphic is loaded, it displays while the rest of the movie finishes loading. And there would be a preloader that shows the progression of the single movie clip.

i have a button thats adds a movie clip to the stage...the movie clip height is bigger than the stage. is it possible to have the stage "extend" when you click the button to show the whole movie clip?

So what time trying to do is play a specific frame in the movieclip based on the time of day:

but when I change to "gotoandPlay" the movieclip just loads from the beginning frame and seems like it doesnt check the time.

Is there a way to fade a movie clip out based on the proximity of the mouse? Basically if my mouse is greater than 100 pixels away from a movie clip, I want the movie clip to fade to 0 and stay invisible.

I got a flash file which reads xml data and based on total data I need to duplicate movie clips and show them horizontally. Till now i have read the data and displayed it but dont have idea how to display them horizontally.

Basically what I'm trying to do is make a sundial-style clock animation. I'm using AS2 in Flash CS4. I'm still quite new to Flash so my AS know-how is slightly limited...
I want to get the time from the user's computer (I'm using getHours) and make a line (movie clip) rotate to a certain angle based on the hour. Eg. 1pm = 13 degrees, 2pm = 26 degrees and so on. This is the script I have so far and all it seems to do is rotate the movie clip to 90 degrees.

I created a movie clip which loops some text, i would like to populate the stage with instances of it but also with some in a different colour. When I copy frames from my clip and paste them into a new symbol(movie clip) the colour of the other instances changes as well.

I want to change variables on the main stage's code from within a movie clip.
Say for example, I want to change a variable called 'chair'
In AS2, this is how I would do it:
(on the main stage)

The thing should work like this: theres a movie clip in frame 10 of the timeline with two buttons inside, by clicking one of them the movie should jump to frame 15 and take the alpha of two Mc there (they are inside a different movie clip) to 0. This is what ie been trying (code on the button, btw):

I'm trying to get AS to change the colour of several MC's - but it's not working... I wondered if anyone could please tell me where I've gone wrong? I have 5 large MC squares - when hovered/rolled over they reveal text/colour within. That part works!
What I am trying to achieve is: When rolling over 1 of the squares (i.e. sq1) to tint the colour of the other 4 squares to grey - so that the one that is hovered over is full colour, but the other 4 are greyed out. On rollout of sq1, the other 4 grey squares return to their coloured state.
I worked through the Kirupa - Changing Colours with AS tutorial, and tried to apply that to my situation, but I still can't get it to work.

I'm creating a slideshow gallery in flash and am basically there now except for one bit...

The slider at the bottom for the thumbnails moves ok but I want it to stop at the last slide. I
I can manage to code it based on the mc's _x value
i.e if (mc._x < -200){ //do nothing }
but this creates a dead stop and I want a gently slow down like if you were to navigate from thumb 8 back to 1.
all of my coding at the moment uses the mc's x value in relation to the mouse's distance.
