ActionScript 2.0 :: [FMX2004] Setting Event Handler For Dynamically Created Buttons
May 23, 2005
I'm using Flash Remoting to grab a result set from a SQL Server database. Then, using the total records in the result set, I'm creating the respective number of movie clips on the stage. Each of these movie clips is an instance of the "button_mc" movie clip I have in the library, named "button_0", "button_1", ..."button_n". The library movie clip that I'm using to create the instances contains a standard Flash button.
Anyway, that part is working fine. What I want to do is dynamically generate the onRelease event handler for each of these unique buttons. When I try to do this within the for loop, it sets all the event handlers to the last item in the list. What I want to do with the event handler is change the text of a dynamic text field based on the button name.
e.g. buttonName.onRelease = function() {
myDynamicTextField.text = "button_"+i;
}
In some ways it makes sense that the event handler is always going to be the last available in the loop, as the handler is called after the loop is completed. However, I'm hoping there's a way to make the handler "stick" after the loop is completed.
I have a Tree, which has an itemRenderer. On the itemRenderer, driven by the XML conditions, objects are created dynamically and added as a children to nodes. These new objects shall trigger an event handler ( some click events mostly ). How do I pass the event handler to the tree and later to the dynamically created new objects inside itemRendere?
I seem to be having a recurring problem attaching events to a button i have created within 2 other movieclips.I get the following error:TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.So it looks like it can't find the button, in order to attach the event listener. The question is why? I am attaching a similar event to a button on the main timeline and that works fine. So it looks like a scope issue, but I am referring to it properly.
I'm creating a photo gallery script with 3 categories (people, places, and things). The 3 categories all share the same thumbnail movie clips whose onRelease handlers I want to change depending on whichategory is selected If you look at the newCat() function at the bottom of the script you'll see my comments as to what is happening and when Apparently the event handlers being assigned to the thumbnails are using the local variable 'pict' inside the 'newCat()'function which is being overwritten each time the function goes through a loop? Does anyone know why this is happening or another approach I can take?
Code: //set up picture categories and file names people = ['mittens.jpg', 'penny.jpg', 'selfportrait.jpg'];

Long time listener, first time caller here. I'm having trouble with how Flash sets the _x property of a dynamically created movieclip. If I create a rectangle on the stage using the Drawing API:
Code: //for the purposes of this example, assign a value to i var i:Number = 0; //assign var squareName var squareName:String = "square" + i; //create an empty movieclip named [squareName] at depth 1 this.createEmptyMovieClip([squareName], 1); [Code] .....
I'm not new to Flash by any stretch of the imagination, but I have never come up against this problem before. For context, I'm actually getting my feet wet with the Tween class, and am having trouble animating dynamically created movieclips due to this confusion with coordinates. When I tween a dynamically created clip from one set of coordinates to another, they are offset by the movieclip's _x and _y properties starting at 0, 0, rather than their actual position on stage.
I created a movie clip symbol with a user interface in it, using the standard components. It contains various components that I draged on the stage. I named the instances (e.g titleLabel). Then I created an ActionScript class for that user interface. Under the linkage properties of the symbol I specified that class. In the class itself, i declared the attribute "var titleLabel:Label". I thought this would be the same instance from the symbol? But: Trying to set the text of the Label AFTER the movie was dynamically added to the parent does not work. I cannot access any properties.
Here is the example:
My Class for the user interface:
Code: import mx.controls.*; class Information extends MovieClip { var titleLabel:Label; //this is the same instance name as in the symbol
i'm creating a completely dynamic form. i want to assign a variable name to a textfield and then pass that variable with a LoadVars() object.
here's a small piece of code i can't get working:
//create movieclip (used like a form) _root.createEmptyMovieClip( 'dialog_body', 0 ); //create textfield input
[Code].....
bottomline: if i create a textfield using the traditional method and assign the 'var' it works fine. if i create a textfield dynamically at run time, and use the *.variable property, the variable is NOT sent..
I am having trouble setting the alpha of a movie clip (this is a bitmap, if that matters). My code is as follows:
Code: on (change) { if (this.getSelectedItem().data == 3) { set (this._parent.ahouston._alpha,100)} if (this.getSelectedItem().data <> 3) { set (this._parent.ahouston._alpha,0)} }
I don't believe it is a problem with my combobox actionscript, as just putting:
Code: set (this.ahouston._alpha,100)
in the only frame of the parent movie clip doesn't work either.
EDIT: Now it shows it with 0% alpha, but won't turn to 100%. I was wrong. It is a combobox problem.
trying to create a menu dynamically from an array. I know there is a way to circumnavigate the issues i am having by making another array with linkNames in it (i think), but im trying to understand why this isnt working. Check this out.
Code: var playerArray:Array = ["THIERY","FIGO", "RONALDINO", "WAYNE"]; var contents:MovieClip = this.createEmptyMovieClip("contents", this.getNextHighestDepth());[code]....
'currItem.currVar', in my eyes, should be assigned the value of 'i' at that time in the loop, then move on to the next currItem right? Tracing 'currItem' traces 'menuItem. menuItem'+i to the output window fine, so im assuming that currItem is indeed a reference to a unique clip to which assign an action. The catch is, its not assigning the action I want, its assigning the value of 'i' at the end of the loop to all currVar's.I recently read a post explaining this conumdrum, stating that "variables are not "burnt" into functions when they are placed there. They will reflect the variable, where ever it may exist at the time it was requested, not at the time the function using that variable was defined," but in this case,since I am assigning the value of 'i' to anothing variable inside my dynamic movieClip.
When i test the movie in flash itself everything works fine, but when i open the movie in IE or the stand alone flash player, details_txt and length_txt are both empty.
I am dynamically creating panels based on information i get from an XML file but i'm having a problem with adding buttons to these panels. These buttoms are also created based on information taken from the XML file. The problem seems to be in the way i give the panels an Id name.[code]...
I have started to create my buttons dynamically. When doing so, I would like to have a number for each, that I can use to then call other things, such as text from an array, images, etc. All my assets in this file are numbered. For example, the button that I am creating with the following for loop, will have a string from an array, and a jpg that will load when it is clicked.
For example, "thumb_scroller.all_thumbs.thumb5" will, when clicked, load a jpg, called 5.jpg and reference a string from an array, at the 5 place in that array. So, if I could somehow, send the number 5 as a parameter with the clickAction();, I could then do what I want. I had tried something like this clickAction(i); but it did now work, because i got updated until the for loop was done and so had the same value for all buttons created by it. How is this done? Is there a way to create dynamic variable that I can send as a parameter with the clickAction()?
I have created a class that creates a button with a bitmap underneath, and dynamic embedded text on the top. The buttons upState has a drop shadow on it, the overState, changes the Text from a dark to a light color, and the down moves the buttons image and text by a couple of pixels down and across. All this works fine, however when I click on the button, I get a very quick flicker of my text field, which was not my intention. I am a complete newbie to Action Script, and can not find any solution to this unwanted flicker. My Class is as follows:
In the there is a dynamically created movie clip a navigation menu but i just can't find out how to give URL to the buttons dynamically created can someone show me how?t
So I have an object, generated on each click of the mouse. It's set up as a series of points with properties, with values for position randomly calculated, and set around where the user clicks the mouse. Lines are drawn from where the mouse is clicked out to each of these points, so it kind of looks like a star, but only lines, rather than a solid shape (like those old 50's atom clocks?). So once clicked there's an enter frame event listener on the object so that each of the points 'wobble' (using a randomly generated number) up and down around the original point.
For some reason, I can either set it so that on each new click of the mouse and newly generated object, the last one stops "wobbling" and only the new one does, or each new object moves to where the new object is, and maybe is still wobbling(?), but is underneath the new object. This way has the event.target as a new object in the wobble function, so I think it may be just a case of where the centre point is - i.e. saving the mouse x and y for each object individually, or perhaps I have too much of the setup function code repeated in my "wobble"function?
I've dynamically created event listeners in the usual sort of way:
Code: myText.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, hover(nameLabel)); function hover(nameLabel):Function {
[Code].....
The problem is how to remove the event listener later in the program as the usual code isn't working. I'm guessing I should have done this in a class but I'd like to understand this problem better.
Now I've dynamically created some buttons using XML. They're spread around the stage and I've modified a tooltip script to give each button a tooltip on Mouse_Over. But to se the logic and make it work using AS3 is hard (for me). I want a function that accept to parameters: Tooltip text and Object to tooltip. In my code I get this error msg when initiating the function on dynamically created buttons: 1118: Implicit coercion of a value with static type flash.display:Sprite to a possibly unrelated type flash.display:MovieClip. I beleive there are more than one thing here needing a fix.
My app has buttons that users press to insert predefined strings into a textarea. I'm now making it load in the button values dynamically so users can define their own buttons.I'm using a buttons.txt which contains a different label on each line (button1, button2,button3 etc). I loop through the text file and add the buttons to a group. This all works, but now the hard part. How can I assign an eventlistener to these buttons so that they output text to the screen?
protected function view1_viewActivateHandler(event:ViewNavigatorEvent):void { var path:File = File.documentsDirectory.resolvePath("buttons.txt");
Im having a problem where I have a set of numbered functions and I need to call them from the dynamically created buttons but I need to make sure the numbered functions are relative to each button..so button 1 will call function 1.
I am trying to use the ENTER_FRAME event with a number of dynamically created movieclips and it is not working.The swf features a series of five clock faces that the user will select by hitting the appropriate button. Each clock has five unique movieclips to that season including a second hand, a minute hand, a main character, a seasonal clock face and a back ground, again, each of these MovieClips are different on each of the five clocks. So I have a series of five listeners for each of the buttons:
i have a swf file which is a framework file done in puremvc and i m loading multiple swf files. one of the swf file loaded into the main swf file loads multiple sub swf files in it. works fine but in the loaded swf file which loads multiple swf files in it.. button dosent work at all. i m not able to click on any button. i m jst making a tree structure so can be easily understood..
container swf -> external swf -> miniSwf file and in miniSwf dynamic button are not clickable but they have all the Mouse eventListeners.
I'm dynamically creating movieclips with dynamically created movieclips inside them and am having trouble with targeting them.Below is a simplified example of what I'm trying to achieve, in the real file there are a lot more movieclips and I'm creating and naming them with a for loop.
This one is just one Sprite created inside another sprite. I can target the top level sprite named "testname". However when i try target the nested MC it throws an error.The bottom couple of traces are just test MCs I've made to make sure i got the syntax right, on targeting nested movieclips.
PHP Code:
var holder:Sprite = new test1();holder.name = "testname";this.addChild(holder);var holder2:Sprite = new test2();holder2.name = "testname2";holder.addChild(holder2);trace(getChildByName("testname").x); //this one traces finetrace(getChildByName("testname").getChildByName("testname2").x);//this throws up an errortrace(testclip1.x);trace(testclip1.testclip2.x);
I have an event listener for a custom event type. This custom event overrides the clone method as required.In this event listener I want to dispatch an instance of a different type of event... a different custom event instance altogether. It also overrides the clone method as required.The problem is I'm getting a type coercion error: TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: ...I do not know what is trying to do the casting. My code is:
/* elsewhere in a method */ addEventListener(GestureEvent.GESTURE_SCALE, handlePinched); /* the event handler */
