ActionScript 2.0 :: Random Placement Of Array Items?
Nov 18, 2008
I have an array with 8 items, and I want them to be randomly placed on the stage with each load, or when a "shuffle" button is pressed. Just a simple puzzle where the pieces are to be scrambled and then dragged and dropped by the user.Current code that isn't working:
Code:
var myArray:Array = new Array();
myArray[0] = puzzle1;
why when I place something on the stage it does not match up on the web page. Do I have to set the co-ordinates of the item for it to appear in the correct place on a web page.
Picture the scene, my trees are grown, the sun is in the sky and the birds are singing, as you move the mouse over one of the empty fields, tiny pretty flowers begin to grow where your mouse has been.
My goal here is to place this movie clip randomly along the x axis, play it and then repeat. This is what I've got so far:[code]It places the movie clip at random location every time a new frame is played but I want it to play the whole movie clip and then replace it.
It is a simple matter to place your object in a random place on the stage and not have it hanging over the edge, like so:[code]But for some reason I am having great difficulty coming up with a solution to how the random placement might work once the object has been rotated. and the registration point is no longer in the global upper-left corner. This might be easy if the rotation was a fixed # but I am rotating randomly along the whole spectrum.

I need to randomly position identical symbols in a movie - I have found a way I can do it in the main timeline using this code:
n = 10; while (n>0) { duplicateMovieClip ("/r1", n, n); n = n-1;
[Code]....
The problem is that the _x and _y parameters only seem to work in the main timeline, and I need the whole thing to be self-contained inside a movie clip, so that I can easily paste it into other Flash movies (about 75 of them). Is it possible to specify a random location inside a MC?
I have a clip in the library with the linkage ShootingStar, and I need this to be randomly placed all over the stage at intervals of between 0.1 and 1 second, as well as random sizes between 100% and 300%. And having a random tint to it.
I need to "arrange" an array item by using the up/down arrow keys. Each item in the array is represented by a movieclip on the screen, and the idea is to select one, and then move it up and down through the array. For example say you have 7 items in your inventory and want to move item nr 6 ( array[6] ) to the top of the visual representation list ( array[0] ). So it would move through the array and when you hit the top it jumps back down to 7 again. one jump for each keystroke.
This thumbnail loader has been the bane of my existence for the past several days. I finally have the images loading in correctly from the XML through an Array.
However, I can NOT for the life of me get them to load with equal distance from one another that corresponds with the varying image widths. I have set up a contentLoaderInfo in order to trace the widths of the images, but can't figure out how to associate them with their respective images in the array to appropriately define the x location.
ActionScript Code: //XML Load in XML var XMLURLLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(); XMLURLLoader.load(new URLRequest ("ggcelebrity.xml"));
I want a movieclip consisting of a dynamic text box that, from the time it's loaded onto the stage, loads a randomly selected text string from an array, and continues to loop until the clip is removed from the stage. I also want the text strings to appear in the text box for random intervals between 500 and 3000 milliseconds.
While I've found tutorials here and elsewhere on loading one element from an array, usually triggered by a button, I don't know how to combine/alter it with the other elements.So I want this movieclip on the stage randomly flashing phrases from an array, some for a barely perceptible time, and others for a readable time.
I've been putting data into an array via XML, and then selecting at random an image string to load in a pic at random. But whilst doing this, I wanted to remove the String from the Array that I have just used, so I don't get repetition of the same image in the output. I initially thought that pop would remove the string I had just used - But of course it Removes the last value in the Array instead, which doesn't really help.
Ok - so how about randomizing the data once inside the Array, after it has been pulled in from XML!? That way I can load in the 'last' image, and then pop it out! Keeping a randomized selection of images each time 'it' is loaded
I am working on trying to collect data within an array (which works) and this data is collected when a button is pressed or selected. I also want the ability to remove an item from the array if the button is pressed again. Currently, I have these buttons dynamically generated and everything works well. The buttons have ids applied to them. SO what I am trying to get working is, if I select button 0, 2, 3 (0 indexing), the data array created holds [A., C., D.]. I want to remove A. after I click button 0. Instead, it seems to cause problems. What I am doing wrong with splicing??? trace statement:
A. items so far selected selected items are: 0 A.,C. items so far selected
I'm so proud of myself. I figured this out all by myself and thought I would share. (If you can't tell, I'm new to AS) I needed a way to grab an item in a specific location and have it return an array of items. Here is how I did it:
I have a character that can move on two dimensions, and i've got coins and a money counter. I'd like to learn how to make random items go into an inventory.
I'm creating my first game in Flash mx. Its a conveyor belt game where toys move from left to right. There are several boxes located underneath the belt. The user has to drag and drop each toy into its correct box. I want each toy to continuously come out in a random order. (1 idea) randomly select movie clips from the library? Each movieclip representing a toy.

I have an array that contains movieclips. All of the movieclips have te type and they are all positioned on the stage next to eachother.
Above the displayed movieclips i have 3 buttons, each simbolizing a type, what i want to do is: i click on one of the buttons and all of the movieclips that dont match the right type should be removed from the stage, the remaining movieclips should then tween so that they are next to eachother again. If i click the button again then the movieclips should be displayed again to where they were and should all be positioned again next to eachother.
I'm a bit green when it comes to code and I have a specific thing I need to do which has had me going round in circles (no laughing at the back!). It must be pretty simple but I'm stumped! Basically I have 6 movieclips on the timeline with instance names 'btn1', 'btn2' etc to 'btn6'. These movieclips have an "on" and an "off" state (frame labels)
I am undergoing some experiments on creating object arrays before I attempt to implement it on my main flash document.
Ive created an object array with 3 variables, and im attempting to change the values, then trace the values back to see if its working. Ive tried many things but I keep getting [object: Object] back in the output window.[code]...
What I've got is a menu that loads images as buttons. It will only display menu items that are within a certain group (i.e. if themenuitem.node Value == groupid[q] then it will display that menu item. Each of the menu items has a unique number (Itemnumber[n]). I have a loop that goes through and displays the menu items that are within a certain group. I am currently able to also find out the unique number of each of the menu items where themenuitem.nodeValue == groupid[q], but what I want to do with these numbers, is place them all into an array as it loops through.So, say for example, it finds an item in the loop. It tells me this item is number 4 (if I tell it to trace(Itemnumber[n]) within the loop). Then, it finds another item in the loop, and it tells me this item number is 6. I want to be able to add items to an array as it loops through, so I'll have an array at the end like this: (4, 6).Currently my ActionScript looks like the following. Never mind if there are variables that are not defined in there -- they have been defined in other parts of my movie.[code]As you can see, I've made an attept at achieving this by trying numarray[numarraylength] = n; -- but all this does is send me an array, then overwrite it next time it loops (so I get an array like (4, 4), then one like (6, 6). I've added comments in the code to further explain what I'm trying to do.
I've got a combo box adding items from an array. The labels are working just fine, but adding the data with a variable won't work for me. If I put in an actual number, I get that result, but trying to add it with a variable I always get 1 as a result. classData only ever = 1. I can access the array. I know it must be in the syntax.[code]
