I am loading an swf file into an EmptyMovieClip container called "container" using loadClip. I cant figure out how to reference the different instances inside the loaded swf.[code]...

Here is a simple example of what I need to be able to do:I have a movieclip, "main_movie", in the main frame, which has multiple instances inside of it...for example "mc_1", "mc_2", and "mc_3".I am unable to figure out how to dynamically reference them. Please look at the code below and let me know what I'm doing wrong.

I need to load several swf from several rollover on mcs instances. I create an empty mc as follow

It works ok, loads, unloads but of course the swfs all load at the same x and y positions. I need each loaded swf to have a different position each time there is a rollover... SO SO SO Do I have to create an empty movie clip ( container 2, 3 etc...) for each mc?

I have 3 picture slideshows usings XML, the pictures will be changing form time to time that's why i needed it like this.Every slideshow is inside a folder, ej: gal1, gal2, gal3.In every folder i have the images, the flash file (gallery.swf) and the xml file.I have the main movie in wich i have a container where most data shows... and in wich i made an emptymovieclip, called "galMC" (now i know i could have used createEmptymovieclip, but maybe next time)[code]I have tried various methods but i always end up unloading "galMC"...the problme i think is that if i reload the container and click on another slideshow (gal2 or gal3), i see only the first image of the selected slideshow and then and then it starts showing the first slideshow that was loaded, so i guess i need to really UNLOAD that slideshow to load another and this is not hapenning.

- loop through the Grid array and place each tile on the stage

- assign RedBall a random Grid coordinate and places it on the stage at that coordinate

I want to be able to click RedBall, which will create a border around the tile beneath RedBall, and create borders around the tiles above, below, to the left and to the right. BUT, I don't want to reference the tiles by their distance in pixels from RedBall or from each other; I want to reference the tiles by their coordinates in the Grid array. So I want to:

- get the coordinates of RedBall

- use those same coodinates to reference the tile at the same coordinates in the Grid array

- use the tile's coordinates to reference the tiles above/below/left/right

- apply a border to all these tiles

What's the best way to reference an instance of a tile? Should I apply a name to each instance as it's created in the loop? like myTile.name = "tile"+i+"_"+j; ? If so, how do you reference that instance later? Just tile1_3 ? Do you have to prepend it with root, or stage, or the class it was originally created in? Do you have to use getChildByName? OR, can you still reference it later without having given it a name?

long title i know. This concerns the data handling for a physics engine i'm writing. At the moment, i divide objects in my engine, into three broad groups (2d arrays), which allows me to save on a lot of processing. every object has an array for its records which is held inside one of the three main arrays. however, this division is causing more processing work in other spots, particularly where finding things is concerned.

what i'm wondering is if it would be possible to make a master list, but still keep my three smaller arrays, and for an object's records to be synchronised regardless of whihc place i update it. actually going and synchronising it would be extra work that kind of defeats the point, but what i hope to do is reference object records from the master array, so thst both the master array and the three small arrays hold references to the same data objects

It's me again and I'm running into a problem. So, I have this movie clip that is nested inside multiple movie clips. I want to tell Flash to perform an action when that movie clip hits another movie clip in the main timeline. It's just collision detection for a game using the hitTestObject code. I was thinking of using MovieClip(root), but that won't work since it's nested so much.

I've looked all over the web, including this forum and can't seem to find a solution to my problem. I have the following:A main movie (root) that loads external swf files as needed. These external swf files have movieclips within them I want to reference. So I have the following code in the main movie (root).[code]Everything up to the point of tracing through the loaded movieclip works fine. When the movie is tested, it does not seem to want to trace through all child information of the loaded movieclip.Essentially I'm doing this to see what is inside the loaded movieclips (though I know 'cause I can look at the fla file); however I need actionscript to be able to see into the loaded movieclips so that I can adjust another movieclip within the loaded movieclip as necessary.

I have a movie clip that has a few layers and a button on one of the layers. on the button I have this code:

Now, this mc is on the Main timeline and has an istance name "home_btn". I have a sliding menu type navagation going on and have some code for the "home_btn" on the main timeline:

home_btn.onRelease = function(){
menuSlide(contentHold.content1);
}

WHen I try to use the code on the maintime line and the code on the button inside the mc--it ofcourse doesn't work. How can I reference the rollover/out actions on the inside of the mc from the main timeline?

I'm trying to reference a specific frame inside a MC in my .swf file from an .as file.What I want is to capture the current frame of the movie clip for the .as file. It's for the purpose of points when you shoot each plane. It's an easy trick of frame 1's plane would be worth 100 points, frame 2's plane 200 points, etc.I thought I'd write a line like this in my collision detection section of my .as file.

Code:
planePoints = currentFrame * 100;

The only problem is, of course, it grabs the current frame of the main .swf timeline that my flash file uses, and not the movieclip that's being called to produce the planes.So I thought I'd be able to specify a path to the movie clip (in this case it's called Airplane in the MC's linkage properties)

planePoints = Airplane.currentFrame * 100;
Then, of course, it freaks out and says that 'access of possibly undefined property currentFrame through a reference with static type Class.'

I still get confused with AS3 and the way items are handled vs AS2. I've lost track of how many times I type _root.

I'm trying to reference the document class from inside a MovieClip that's dynamically added to the stage. I'm using this script:

Where "documentClass" is the name of my class (duh).

This works fine, however -- when I move the class file into a folder (and make all the necessary revisions to point to the file) this doesn't work (everything else still does). I get a "not found, possibly undefined method" error. The class name is technically com.documentClass now, how do I point to that? The file is an Adobe Air file.

I wonder what the most common reasons for memory leaks in AS3 are.First thing what I am not sure about is: is it better to have a variable reference inside a function or outside it. Will the variable be null-d automaticly inside a function or when do I have to null it and when not?I have massive problems with my game with memory leaks. I noticed I reference some of the clips of the timeline even inside my debugging clip to display propertys and this was causing collecting huge amount of memory.But even before I go into the game with bigger objects the System.memory is slowly growing and growing.I just have a socket connection and some interval loops and enter_frame events.
